Compile driver for new kernel rpm

Hi All, My question is directed at those with kernel compiling experience. I have a driver source xxxxx.c file and a Makefile with it. I want to recompile the kernel to include the driver and rebuild the initrd.img. Where do I copy the file in the kernel sources? I currently have it in a sub folder of the drivers directory in the kernel source folder. There is one more question if I may, it does not have a xxxx.h (header file) do I need it? The driver does compile perfectly without it. But I am not sure if I need to compile it into the kernel? How do I change passwords / remove users for Samba?

I've got a bit of a problem with Samba. I just can't work out how to change passwords or remove users. I've just got user security.. lines in smb.conf are: security = user passdb backend = tdbsam I've removed the user using pdbedit, I've removed the unix user, smbpasswd says the user doesn't exist yet I can still connect to the shares. I'm obviously just missing something here. Can anyone point me in the right direction? thanks

RHEL, centos and seeing if i now understand this

ok, given the flurry of responses to my original post, let me see if i have a handle on this as i think i've finally figured it out and, yes, it does make sense. the scenario is that there is a very large software company in the area whose only officially supported linux platform is currently suse. however, they are getting increasing call to have their product run on red hat. for most of their clients (who are fairly sizable) who will want official support, RHEL will be the obvious choice and the software company will advertise that RHEL is what they support. the SW company will be happy, the clients will be happy, and red hat will be happy. on the other hand, if there is the occasional client who is perhaps not as large, or doesn't have a budget for RHEL, centos will be the obvious option if they're prepared to do their own support. that scenario will, i'm guessing, not be that common so red hat has nothing to worry about it in terms of cutting into their revenue stream in any significant way. and, finally, for any client that chooses centos, that will represent a possible support contract for independent linux consultants. sound about right? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. rpm -qa not displaying sources

Hi All, I must have missed something here. I installed my kernel source using rpm -ivh kernel-`uname -r`.el5.src.rpm it installs perfectly, without error, but if I cd to the /usr/src/redhat folder, all I get is SOURCES and SPECS... rpm -qa | grep kernel doesn't return the kernel source rpm I installed only the kernel, devel and headers. I'd recommend using the beta of Gallery3 instead - it will be upgradable to the final version, and -3 is so much nicer to work with than -2. Actually, I've stayed on -1 simply because -2 was way too complex. You won't get it through yum, but you can update using git instead of having to download and untar new versions. BR Bent

Slow CentOS VM when running off the network

I have a CentOS 5.3 VM running under VMware on a WIndows XP laptop. Everything works fine when connected to the network. However, removed from the network, most everything in the CentOS VM takes minutes to complete. For instance, starting a new Terminal window takes over 3 minutes. I did an strace, and there are a couple of long waits when trying to open a socket (/tmp/.ICE-unix/XXXXX for instance). The host and the VM can ping each other fine, but any access to the VM (either external or from within) eventually succeeds, but it takes a long time. First, I thought I'd reduce the default socket timeout (which I believe is set to around 90 seconds), but I can't find where to do that on a system wide level. But I really need to figure out what is causing the problem in the first place. I'm assuming the network is somehow misconfigured, but I don't know how. Alfred

problem with centos 5.3 upgrade

Hi All, I'm running CentOS 5.3 x86, and recently my yum update isn't running as it should. It pops up with sub conflict messages for i386 packages, which I don't need - even though yum is downloading them. Due to this sub conflict messages, I'm not able to update/install my x86 packages, as the installation stops at the error message. Anybody, any idea how to come over this issue ?
