dovecot autocreate home and /var/mail

Hi, is there a way to make dovecot autocreate the home directory and the /var/mail/username mbox file? I have tons of users in /etc/passwd but they might never open a shell (where I have oddjobmkhome working), just pop/imap. Thanks!

Init checking for processes that are configured to "respawn"

Hi folks, I have a sophisticated question for which I can't find any hints on the web: If you configure init (via /etc/inittab) to respawn processes (like the getty processes) when they exit - how often does init check for the existence of such a process? Does it check actively at all or does it rely on some kind of inter process communication? I am not a programmer, so maybe the second question is completely nonsense. Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

Memory reporting...

Hi, I have a little question about memory usage... When I do a free, I get: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 18482800 18030668 452132 0 683068 9426792 -/+ buffers/cache: 7920808 10561992 But, when I do a ps, mysql is the only process that takes noticable memory; and it is far from 7.9GBs... USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND mysql 28346 36.0 15.6 3241196 2884692 ? Sl Jul04 981:19 \_ /usr/libexec/mysqld --basedir=/usr --datadir=/IOL/mysql --user=mysql --pid-file=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid --skip-external-locking --port=3306 --socket=/IOL/mysql/mysql.sock Once you removed the buffers and the cached memory from the total used memory... what is left? Looks like I have "something" (that is not buffers/cached) that takes more than 4GB... Could it be disk cache or is it included in the cached value? Any idea? Thx, JD

yum install hangs

Howdy, The yum install <package> hangs in between. This happened few days as well, but just after doing Ctrl+C it reported error with mirror and switched to another one. Today, however, it is not responding to Ctrl+C and kill or kill -9 command is also not working. Any clues? Thanks, CS.

csgfs repo for CentOS 4

Is there any update on the csgfs packages for CentOS 4? The current rpms are 10 months old unless I'm looking at the wrong mirror. -- Bowie

Trouble running 'alsamixer' as normal user on headless box with minimal system

Hi, I just transformed an old Pentium III 500 into a headless jukebox. It's installed in the basement, near the stereo. There's only a base CentOS system on it (GNOME unchecked, package customization checked and then everything unchecked). From there on, I just installed the ALSA utils, and vorbis-tools. The machine is only supposed to do one thing (and to do it well, UNIX philosophy :oD): fetch an audio stream (produced by MPD/Icecast upstairs on a big PC) and then output it from the soundcard to the AUX IN from the stereo. I have a partial - and near-total - success, in that everything runs fine... as root user. what would be happen if swap partition is not?

Hello, all. I know the function of the swap and can make swap partion or file. But, if there is no swap partion at system, what would be happen? that makes the system unstable or not? I have one system that has no swap, but there was no problem until now. Upgrading drives in raid 1

I think I have solved my issue and would like some input from anyone who has done this for pitfalls, errors, or if I am just wrong. Centos 5.x, software raid, 250gb drives. 2 drives in mirror, one spare. All same size. 2 devices in the mirror, one boot (about 100MB), one that fills the rest of disk and contains LVM partitions. I was thinking of taking out the spare and adding a 500gb drive. I would run this " sfdisk -d /dev/sda | sfdisk /dev/sdc " (drive 'a' setup is cloned onto drive c) Then I would add drive c to the raid array as the spare. I would then pull out drive b and allow drive c to be synced with a. At this point drive c has 250gb worth of partioned space in raid/lvm. I then add a 500gb drive b and repeat above pulling out drive a. Now I have two 500gb drives (b and c) with 250gb worth of partitions mirrored. I am thinking I would next forget about md0 (the boot part) and concentrate on the md1, where the whole system lies. # mdadm --grow /dev/md1 --size=max I believe this will grow out the size of md1 to fill the 500gb of the drive. I would then wrestle with expanding the LVMs that fill the md1 up as I wish. After that, I would add drive 'a' 500gb to the mix by cloning the partitions and then adding as a spare. So...does this sound like the way to upgrade from 250gb to 500gb drives on a raid 1 software raid? Or, is it back to the drawing board?

How best to allow users to change Samba passwords?

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on this. I've got two Samba servers, each using passdb.tdb for authentication. All works well, but I've now been asked to let users change their own passwords (a requirement of data secuity). What's the best way of arranging this, preferably updating both servers at the same time? thanks
