Supermicro Adaptec AIC-9410 HostRAID controller

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 1) Has anyone been able to get their AIC-9410 controller recognized in CentOS 5.3? I'm working with a Supermicro X7DBR-3 motherboard. It has 2 "ICH Raid Codebase" options in the Bios (Intel and Adaptec); neither of which seem to change Linux's behavior. The interesting part though, choosing either Adaptec or Intel, then performing an 'lspci' always displays "Intel Corp 631xESP/632xESP SATA RAID Controller (rev 09)". I've seen several people post on a variety of mailing lists (typically using older CentOS revisions), but it doesn't appear many were successful. It seems most swap to software raid. 2) When using this internal host raid controller, shouldn't the raided devices appear as a single device like other traditional scsi controllers? Regardless of the raid options I choose, Linux still continues to see both drives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb). Is this a function of being 'HostRAID'? 3) If you've been able to get it to work, which driver did you use? Thus far, I've tried 2 drivers. 1st driver: adpahci -- Unsuccessful I downloaded it from supermicro's website. ftp.supermicro.com/driver/SATA/Adaptec_ESB2/Linux/Redhat/adpahci.rhel5.i686… After successfully loading the image and inserting the module using kickstart, nothing useful happens, other than several /sys entries added. (NOTE: I had to change the internal cpio archive pathing from `2.6.18-8.el5' to `2.6.18-128.el5'). 2nd driver: aic94xx -- Unsuccessful The driver is built-in via a patch to the Redhat stock kernel. Other than saying that it's loaded, it also does nothing useful outside of /sys entries. Several mailing lists and documents pointed to using the 'attach_HostRAID' option, however, it doesn't exist. Using this option with `insmod' (or modprobe) fails. 3rd driver: adp94xx -- In the works I downloaded this driver from Adaptec's website: http://www.adaptec.com/en-US/speed/sas/linux/adp94xx-1_0_8-12_src_tgz.htm So far, I'm not able to get it to compile because I'm trying to create a patch file so that it incorporates all of the contents of the tarball. Any ideas on where to go from here? I'd really like to avoid software raid. problem with udev when booting kernel 5.3 release 128.4.1

Hi List, I am running a 64 bit 5.3 kernel on an intel mb and all has been well. Today I thought it would be okay to reboot so that the latest kernel was running - i.e move from 128.2.1 to 128.4.1 release. The system passes POST fine, grub passes control to the 128.4.1 kernel and the boot process is under way. after some 30 secs the system starts beeping - continuously. After I hooked up a monitor I find that udev does not come up with OK and thats when the system starts the beep beep beep ...... No logs to see ...... using grub to select 128.2.1 boot fine Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your words of wisdom and advice. Rob

Centos 5.3 install on gigabyte GA-MA790FX-UD5P motherboard

Hi, I am having some difficulties installing centos 5.3 on the gigabyte GA-MA790FX-UD5P motherboard. Has anyone got centos booting on this motherboard? so far I have tried the following. + disabled the jmicron controller as this caused errors on booting JMB363 bad irq(0): will probe later error (this error caused the installation to stop at this point) + tested all components in another computer, they all work. + remove all unnecessary components from the pci bus. + power supply is not an issue since I have used a 850W PSU Basically what I am seeing is once the installation process starts and asks do i have another sata disk, and I select no the screen freezes at this point *every* single time, the screen is always blue with a couple of greek looking characters on the screen. No logs are left at this point in the installation, so it is making it difficult to diagnose. Today I installed the grml distribution and it worked with no issues, it uses a base kernel of 2.6.28. so there is nothing wrong with the hardware but centos still does not want to install on this motherboard. Anyone have any ideas? Nathan

A couple questions about Wine

VirtualBox works great but, since I only really use one Windows program (an older, specialized word processor called Movie Magic Screenwriter), I'm thinking of using Wine to run it in CentOS and getting rid of the Windows virtual machine. But a couple questions: 1) If I run Wine, do I introduce security or performance issues? 2) Is there any difference between Michael Harris' Wine repository and the ones available through... wherever yum is picking it up? (Actually it looks like it has two or three versions listed.) Thanks for any recommendations. I like VirtualBox, but it seems like overkill. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.3

setup iptables to allow forwarding through eth1

I have a fresh installed CentOS 5.3 server which should route traffic between two networks like this: network A (Internet) -- eth0 (default gw) : server : eth1 -- network B (LAN) I have set in sysctl.conf net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1 and routing works fine like this. But when I switch on the iptables service (with default setup, configured when installing the server), routing stops working (or at least I cannot ping a server in network A from network B). I guess the firewall is stopping it, so I read http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Deployment_Guide/s1-firewall-ipt-fwd.… and issued the commands # iptables -A FORWARD -i eth1 -j ACCEPT # iptables -A FORWARD -o eth1 -j ACCEPT but that did not help. So I am asking: what is the correct iptables command to make forwarding work? Regards, Peter

what is the best way to delete so many queue files?

Hello, all. I found that so many unnessary queue files are saved at /var/spool/clientmqueue/ directory. I tested two way to delete these files. 1. # rm -rf /var/spool/clientmqueue/* 2. # cd /var/spool/clientmqueue/ ; find . | xargs rm -fv But this makes a few load of the system and took too much time to delete. What is the best way to delete fast without too much load?
