Kernel NULL pointer vulnerability

Hi all. Julien Tinnes and Tavis Ormandy from the Google Security Team have recently found a Linux kernel vulnerability which affects all 2.4 and 2.6 kernels since 2001 on all architectures. Please read the announcement on LWM: http://lwn.net/Articles/347006/ for further information about the vulnerability and the exploit which has been provided by Brad Spengler (you will find updates on his twitter site). KVM - missing dependency

Hello Everyone, I've installed kvm from the "lfarkas" repo on CentOS 5.3, as per the CentOS wiki page. I now want to install the virt-manager package, but yum is giving me this error: Error: Missing Dependency: python-virtinst >= 0.400.3 is needed by package virt-manager-0.7.0-5.el5.x86_64 (lfarkas) I can't find that package anywhere in that repo. So, where do I get it from? BTW, I would have asked this on the CentOS virt list, but that list is really quiet. will C5.3 support a SmartArray 6i 'out of box', or does it need drivers to boot from this? I am advising someone else remotely and don't have the hardware handy to test.

How to create a tun-device with CentOS packages only?

Hello List, I've got a somewhat weird question. Let me tell you what my intent is first: We're running a set of Dell boxes with CentOS 4. Some of them use OpenVPN. As we need to monitor the system status of these boxes, we use the Dell supplied OMSA package. As it turns out, OMSA totally breaks if you've got one or more tun devices configured. AFAICT Dell denies support with that issue, because OpenVPN is a third-party add-on. Now instead of discussing with Dell for hours, I'd like to reproduce the issue without OpenVPN which brings me to my question: How can I create a tun device without using any add on packages using only software contained in CentOS? Bash Help

I am trying to write a script that can pass cmd line args into an executable it runs, I need at least 4 args, but I need to pass the rest to it in the script if they exist. $@ doesn't help because I use the 1st and 2nd etc, so how do I elegantly handle passing args 4+ if they exist on the end of the command I call? Is there a simple way without constructing the command to execute on the fly by analyzing $# first and building it everytime? Thanks! jlc

advice needed about "554 Too many recipients"

Hi all, A client of ours just requested to increase the max_recipients in Exim to 300, since he keeps getting "554 Too many recipients" error when sending a marketing email from MS Outlook. Before you tell me to use Pine / Mutt / etc to send plain-text emails via mailman, this isn't an option. I would like to know, what are the implications of increasing the default 100 to 300? If 300 email recipients were added to the "To:" field, does it establish 300 connections to the SMTP server, or not? In the Exim documentation (http://www.exim.org/exim-html-current/doc/html/spec_html/ch14.html#SECID105) I found this: "If this option is set greater than zero, it specifies the maximum number of original recipients for any message. Additional recipients that are generated by aliasing or forwarding do not count. SMTP messages get a 452 response for all recipients over the limit; earlier recipients are delivered as normal. Non-SMTP messages with too many recipients are failed, and no deliveries are done. Note: The RFCs specify that an SMTP server should accept at least 100 RCPT commands in a single message." But, this doesn't tell me if it will have a performance issue with the server, or if other mail servers will have problems with our mail server sending the email to so many recipients in one go. Noob Question: Uninstalling Firefox rpm's

I want to uninstall the default version of firefox, however there appears to be 2 of the same rpm's installed and its complaining.. I've been in Solaris land for the last 5 years and my rpm skills aren't the most current; how is this achieved? OT: Strange message in root e-mail possiablly hacked!!! Not sure??

Morning all, Little back ground. Running CentOS 5.3 fully update. I basically run this as router and gateway for home network. I have two(2) winblows machines hooked up. I am running samba for shares. I opened up root's mail this morning and found this strange little comment : Connections Denied: lib/access.c:check_access(327) 58.239.84.158 : 1 Time(s) smbd/process.c:process_smb(1062) 58.239.84.158 : 1 Time(s) So I started looking around in /var/log. I looked at my secure logs and saw nothing out of the ordinary. I looked in samba and found a log file 58.239.84.158.log. I opened it up and it said the following: [2009/08/15 06:31:34, 0] lib/access.c:check_access(327) Denied connection from (58.239.84.158) [2009/08/15 06:31:34, 1] smbd/process.c:process_smb(1062) Connection denied from 58.239.84.158 There is nothing on this server that I can not replace. Did I just get hacked? Should I wipe this thing and start over? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!! Thanks. Lee Perez

priority plugin and httpd/php

Hello, I'm running centos 5.3 with the priority plugin enabled. One of my 3rd party repos has updated httpd and php packages that i want to get, however it won't overwrite the base packages of httpd* and php* since they were installed from base. How can i update just these specific packages httpd* and php* without changing my priority options? Thanks. Dave.
