I think many dedicated NAS devices, are in fact Linux machines, using an embedded Linux system. -- Just a word of caution. I had a simarly question: building one self, or buyding dedicated hw. Looked through several specs of different boxes, and decided for an ICY-box, that can hold two sata-disks, raid0/raid1/jbod, has an GB-ethernet interface and capable of doing NFS. (which is actually an Linux-box) However, the box is as slow as a proverbial civil-servant, although the link is realy set to GB, it just might as well have been 100MB. And even that its not capable of filling to the max. Hello z00dax, any update about this issue? As i can see, in centos 5.3 the version of php still 5.1.6. Did you have any ETA to php 5.2.0 be moved to release repo? steps to add a new physical disk to existing LVM setup in new centos box?

Not a centos specific question here, but if anyone can save me from shooting myself in the foot would appreciate any pointers.... I have an older centos 4.7 box that I recently replaced with a newer one running centos 5.3. I'd like to add the hard disk from the older one to the newer one before I scrap it for good. I don't care about the data on it, would just like the extra drive on the newer one for my home lan usage. The disk layout on the older one is a 2 partition (/boot and /) with / being a logical volume. Laying out what I think I need to do looks like this : 1. yank old drive and cable up to newer system, expecting this 2nd drive to now be /dev/sdb on the new box 2. pvcreate /dev/sdb1 3. vgextend VolGroup00 /dev/sdb1 (VolGroup00 is the volume group name on both system, pretty much default installs in both cases) 3. lvextend -l+100% /dev/VolGroup00 4. resize2fs / The disk in the old system looks like : [root@cow ~]# fdisk -l /dev/hda Disk /dev/hda: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14946 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/hda2 14 14946 119949322+ 8e Linux LVM [root@cow ~]# fdisk -l -u /dev/hda Disk /dev/hda: 122.9 GB, 122942324736 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14946 cylinders, total 240121728 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 63 208844 104391 83 Linux /dev/hda2 208845 240107489 119949322+ 8e Linux LVM [root@cow ~]# pvscan PV /dev/hda2 VG VolGroup00 lvm2 [114.38 GB / 32.00 MB free] Total: 1 [114.38 GB] / in use: 1 [114.38 GB] / in no VG: 0 [0 ] [root@cow ~]# vgscan Reading all physical volumes. Web server in a sandbox?

I'd like to understand better the sysadmin aspects of running a wiki. I don't have, and don't intend to at this stage, a web server, but I do have spare capacity on my LAN server box, where I'd like to install MediaWiki. I found this article: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/documentation-guide/en_US/sn-sandbox-setup.ht… Would it be straightforward to follow those instructions on a CentOS5 box? Anything I should be aware of? Remember that this is a whole new ballgame for me. Is it likely to meet my needs? OT: What's wrong with RAID5

Hi all, Sorry for the OT. I've got an IBM N3300-A10 NAS. It runs Data Ontap 7.2.5.1. The problem is, from the docs it says that it only supports either RAID-DP or RAID4. What I want to achieve is Max Storage Capacity, so I change it from RAID-DP to RAID4, but with RAID4, the maximum disk in a RAID Group decrease from 14 to 7. In the end, either using RAID-DP or RAID4, the capacity is the same. Now, why RAID5 is not supported? I believe using RAID5, I can get more storage capacity, can't I? I also notice with some onboard RAID controller, they only support either RAID0, RAID1, or RAID1+0. No RAID5. What's wrong with RAID5, is there any technical limitation with RAID5? Thanks.

CentOS for non-tech user

I'm thinking of giving CentOS to a non-tech user for her new desktop. He needs are small. She has been used to Mozilla for both mail and browsing, so equivalents there are not a problem. She needs grip and lame, for her mp3s - again no problem. In fact the only problem I can see is that gwenview doesn't appear to have the kipi-plugins. I can see libkipi listed, but no plugins, and a pbone search didn't find it for me. Perhaps it's available from a repo that I don't have? This is the tool of choice for me, for photo-printing. I think I've covered the areas that she's interested in. Can anyone point out any other things I should consider? Once I have the system set up as she needs I shall set up cron jobs to keep her up to date. Anne -- New to KDE4? - get help from http://userbase.kde.org Just found a cool new feature? CentOS 5.3 LDAP problem.

I currently have about eight servers running a mixture of CentOS x86_64 v5.2 and v5.3 but none with the very latest updates. They all obtain their authentication information over LDAP and to avoid the starting message bus hang problem[1], nscd is set to soft failure. However, yesterday I set up a new CentOS v5.3 server with the latest updates, but it refuses to get beyond "Starting message bus" if I have ldap as an option in nsswitch.conf. The LDAP server is hosted on two separate machines and this machine has an identical set up to the others - including soft failure in the nscd config. If I remove all references to ldap from nsswitch.conf I can get the machine to boot. I can then add those entries back, start nscd and getent works fine. However, when I start samba it then starts to fail stating that it cannot find a users unix account - which is clearly incorrect! To compound matters, ssh now seems to be locking up; freezing after requesting a password and eventually dropping connection. As I am working off-site for the test of the week I cannot post any further information at the moment, however, I think that the installed kernel had a September 2009 compile date. Does anyone know of any reason why the latest updates could be causing this behaviour? I have been unable to find anything relevant in the list archives or in the forums. I am under pressure to get this server working and I don't want to be forced to install Windows, so any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks, Ben [1] http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2047
