Request advise regarding Driver for Intel Motherboard

Hello All I made the mistake of assuming all Intel motherboards would be Linux compatible out of the box and bought one without checking support information. And now on initial install the Network is not working....the Network port is not detected at all. I have bought an Intel board DG41RQI (http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/DG41RQ/index.htm) which does not support Linux Out of Box. I am using a Core 2 Duo E7200 64 bit processor. I am installing CentOS 5.x XEN, minimal install for a XEN dom0. The Intel Linux Support page links to this page here http://forgeftp.novell.com/driver-process/pub/update/realtek/sle10sp2/commo… and lists a lot of drivers. Can someone please advise me which ones I need to install for my particular motherboard & processor type? Also, will these drivers clash with yum updatation from CentOS repos? Can someone please guide and if possible, comment on issues I will face. Intend to install minimal xen dom0 install and couple of low utilization servers and linux desktop. Also, would like to know if I can install Windows XP on same desktop under XEN. With best regards and thanks. Sanjay.

Remote backup of server

Hello, I want mount directory of one server to another over internet. I was looking to NFS4, but there are no security mechanisms. I need encrypted connection using private key (something like SFTP). Or - if there is in CentOS repo (or EPEL) package, that can mount directory over internet using private key and make differential backup (like rdiff-backup). What are you doing right?

I'm a sysadmin by trade, so in my daily work I get to try out all kinds of new technology including operating systems. Over the last year I've noticed that many other distros won't run on some of my hardware (e.g. a Thinkpad T61, Dell E510, GX620) at work and home. But CentOS does. Without fail. Every time (well, there's that old Dell Inspiron 1200 that sits in the kitchen... but we won't go there). Last night I had a hard disk crash on one of my home boxes, so I decided to use it as an opportunity to try out another well known RHEL clone that is also currently at v5.3. Although the md5sum on the disk checked out it wouldn't even boot. I then tried their Live CD. Still no good. So for good measure I tried the latest (v9.x) from another project (you know, the one with the orange and brown color scheme). NG. So the question is, what is CentOS doing *right*? A very sincere thanks to the CentOS project team for all their hard work in making a distro I know I can always rely on.

My question: CentOS 4.7 could support the expansion of capacity by adding 6 disks SCSI Ultra 320 of 300GB in Raid-1? SQL Server 2005 and CentOS?

One of my clients use a software product that is "upgrading" and will shortly utilize micro$oft SQL server 2005. Currently the clients are XP on older machines with the database residing on a Samba / CentOS server and this works very well. Question: Does anyone run SQL server from XP in a virtualbox on CentOS? Any other configuration that works on a linux server? I do not want to have to buy another server grade machine just for this application. Thanks for your insight. Rob

UTC timezone not available in RHEL4

Hi all, I have been using Red Hat for a very long time and run CentOS 4 on some of my production servers. One of the things that has bugged me for a long time is the fact in the Time Zone configuration there is not a selection for UTC or GMT. As a work around I have been linking the /etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC which works, but when Yum auto updates to a new version it resets the timezone back to EST. When this happens it messes up my timings in the crontab. Is there a reason UTC is missing a timezone selection in RHEL4? It is an option in RHEL5. Is there a better way to set the system to UTC then the /etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/UTC work around, and its problems?? Thanks, Mike

iwl4965 causes soft lockups

Hi all, Annoying issue.. my ThinkPad T61 has an iwl4965 wireless card. When I have the wireless switch on, I experience a lot of issues.. system keeps freezing..unfreezing..freezing..etc. Sometimes, a soft lockup is logged to /var/log/messages. psmouse.c also sometimes throws an error saying the mouse lost synchronization. Obviously, this is causing the system to freeze for a sec and throws everything off. This is the case with both iwl4965-firmware ver 228.57.1.21 and 228.57.2.23. Any suggestions? I am not able to use my wifi :( Other info: CentOS 5.3 - 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5 (also happens with 2.6.18-128.el5) x86_64 Thanks in advance for any ideas. Ryan

pwconv with partial /etc/passwd

If shadow passwords are already in use, and new entries are appended to /etc/passwd that include password hashes, is it still possible to use pwconv to generate /etc/shadow entries for just the few newly appended accounts? Regards, Eugene

Hi! Have anyone any idea why w83793G driver is not in the upstream vendor kernel? do i have to compile my own kernel for this to work? Thank you, Adrian
