unattended fsck on reboot

I want to do a reboot of a couple of systems during our maintenance window and fsck them, but would rather try it from home first and not go to the data center. Then of course rush there like a madman if they don't come back up :-) There was a suggestion in the 2nd thread above that with ext3 this should not be required with proper hardware (my paraphrase). I'm using all IBM stuff - x3550, x3650, x3800 and some of the earlier models like x330. I can't imagine this being an issue. xterm clones on VNC problem

I've been scratching my head over this one after setting up VNC on another existing server. Followed the instructions here http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/VNC-Server as usual. It worked initially. However since this server is going to be installed in a rather inconvenient place and having done pretty stupid things before, I decided for the first time to try the portion that says # Add the following line to ensure you always have an xterm available. ( while true ; do xterm ; done ) & So that I don't inevitably do something like kill kde and find myself unable to do anything. The problem now is, for some reason, I get 4 xterm window after restarting (or stop/start) vncserver. The symptoms now are 1. Consistently, of the four xterms window, #3 and #4 can be closed. #1 and #2 will resurrect themselves. *** Removing the while loop from /home/user/.vnc/xstartup does not change this. 2. if I comment out this line in /home/user/.vnc/xstartup exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc I will not get this problem. At least there will only be one xterm window in what I think is the primitive twm desktop. 3. If I then uncomment the xinitrc line, I get back 4 xterms window after restarting vncserver. It's like KDE is somehow insisting on running that while loop even after I've deleted it from the xstartup file. How do I fix this? Admittedly I could simply minimize the two xterm windows and/or switch virtual desktop and ignore them. but obviously something is wrong and it makes me uncomfortable. Everything is 5.3 standard, I've not touched the default X11 config nor xinitrc. Except I did do an yum update to current.

OK, you have my attention. But reading around on the website for 5 or 10 minutes and I'm still not sure what this is. What is it? Why would I use it? What would I use instead of it? (Who are its competitors) When would I not use it? Logrotate in CentOS 5.4 more brutal (to httpd at least) than in 5.3?

I've just updated a few CentOS 5.3 servers to 5.4. One of them were a Apache Webserver. Doing a diff/check on the new ".rpmnew" config files that are made, I saw that the logrotate command for apache was changed. In 5.3 it did a reload, but in 5.4 it does a hard kill: CentOS 5.3: /var/log/httpd/*log { missingok notifempty sharedscripts postrotate /sbin/service httpd reload > /dev/null 2>/dev/null || true endscript } CentOS 5.4: /var/log/httpd/*log { missingok notifempty sharedscripts postrotate /bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/httpd.pid 2>/dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true endscript } Isn't this a bit harsh in 5.4? Wouldn't the 5.3 method be better? -Christopher Thorjussen

Browser related question

Greetings, How does one monitor if a site is being accessed using browser? IOW, I just want to know if a user has launched a session thru Firefox. I basically want to know if a user has tried to access the webserver and unable to reach it and log such instances. I am using cron and curl to seperately monitor the link. Any clues? Centos 5.2/Gnome/Firefox 3.0.16 Regards Rajagopal

DynDNs.org compatible server scripts

Greetings, I know this mail is slightly OT. But my DNS server and and all other compute nodes (currently around 80) run Centos. Has anybody come across some package script which can be used to listen to request from DynDNS.org clients which can be found commonly in the devices? I have a scenario wherein many devices having Dynamic IP scattered across a geographical region. most have an embedded Dyndns.com client which can be enabled. I configure a Private Dynamic DNS server at a central location. Now I need something which will listen to the request thrown out by the devices and update Dynamic DNS Server. TIA Regards, Rajagopal

APC Smart-ups "status codes" (slightly OT)

We got replacement battery "kits" for some of our APC UPS' (Smart-UPS, rackmount). I put them into one tray (it's for an RBC 43, which takes 8, and weighs a ton), and put it in, and let it charge. Idiot "change battery" led stays on. So I hit the test button, it discharges very rapidly (a good number of servers on this), and the led stays on. For some reason, apcupsd's USB test fails, with an HIDDEV i/o error. So I got rid of the weird APC usb cable, and put in one of their serial cables, and run the "smart" test (the USB does more), and get results showing everything's fine. But the idiot light's still on. So, looking at all the values that the "apcsmart" choice can give me, the first thing is UPS status. I've been googling for a while, and can't find a single reference to it. Anyone have a link to somewhere that will give me the status codes (and their meaning)? Thanks in advance. mark

CentOS 5.4 64-bit: Java web browser plugin for 64-bit FireFox?

Does there exist *anywhere* a Java web browser plugin for 64-bit FireFox? The SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK (jdk-6u18-linux-amd64.rpm) does NOT include the Java web browser plugin library. java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-1.2.b09.el5.x86_64.rpm does not have one either. Should I install the *32-bit* SUN 1.6<mumble> JDK and use the 32-64 bit wrapper? perl question

I am trying to run a perl script that said it needs Net::SMPP I ran this: your_host]# *perl -MCPAN -e shell* cpan shell -- CPAN exploration and modules installation (v1.76) ReadLine support enabled cpan> *install Net::SNMP seemed to work. no errors reported. however when I run perl I still get the same error saying needs ./sendmessage.pl Can't locate Net/SMPP.pm in @INC (@INC contains: /usr/lib64/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib64/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.8.8 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl /usr/lib64/perl5/5.8.8/x86_64-linux-thread-multi /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8 .) at ./sendmessage.pl line 18.
