should i (theoretically) be able to boot a "git clone"d kernel on 5.5?

toward the end of a class on friday, just for fun, i showed the students how to install git, clone the latest kernel source, and build and install a new kernel. since it was getting close to end of day, i wanted to keep it simple and directed them to just "make defconfig" to see what would happen. the configuration and build of the kernel and modules worked fine, they installed the kernel and modules, then rebooted but the new kernel panicked almost immediately, apparently whining that it couldn't mount the root filesystem. since they were all running LVM-based systems, i assumed that perhaps we needed to explicitly add LVM support during the config step. i'd still like to be able to build and boot a new kernel on an updated centos box so, later today, i'm going to reinstall 5.5 on a system without LVM (just define some fixed filesystems) to see if that makes a difference. has anyone done this? should i be able to? to recap, all i want to do on a fully-updated centos 5.5 box is * install the development tools * install git * clone the latest kernel repo * make defconfig * make * install new kernel and modules * reboot to new kernel i'm willing to accept that it won't be a perfect kernel and perhaps some drivers will be missing, but at the very least, it should boot without panicking. again, anyone else done this? should it work? i'll try this later today as soon as i have access to my test system again. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. I have a question about software bridge setup (initscripts). If one sets up a bridge network: ifcfg-eth0: DEVICE=eth0 ONBOOT=yes BRIDGE=br0 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ifcfg-eth1 DEVICE=eth1 ONBOOT=yes BRIDGE=br0 HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ifcfg-br0 DEVICE=br0 TYPE=Bridge BOOTPROTO=static BROADCAST=nnn.nnn.nnn.255 IPADDR=nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=nnn.nnn.nnn.0 ONBOOT=yes Deep in the guts of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth all of the proper magic using brutil is done EXCEPT it does not put the NICs into promisc mode. ALL of the documentation for setting up a software bridge talks about setting the NICs into promisc mode. My question: Which is wrong? The documentation for setting up a software bridge? OR /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth? *I* have patched /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth to include the line: /sbin/ip link set dev ${DEVICE} promisc on just after the lines /sbin/ip addr flush dev ${DEVICE} 2>/dev/null /sbin/ip link set dev ${DEVICE} up Should I file a bug report? kmod-kvm for custom CentOS 5.5 kernel

Hello all! I have actual need to build a custom kernel.(Have to change Preemption model to 'server' and turn off Preempt the big kernel lock, ect) I have heard bits and pieces about these changing defaults in newer kernels but I haven't investigated that yet. This of course is not a problem at all, made my needed changes to the source code and successfully build both the standard and the Xen kernel using the rpmbuild guide from this site found here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel Built: kernel-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5.1.x64.x86_64 kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5.1.x64.x86_64 The standard kernel works well, I haven''t messed around much with Xen yet (I get an "Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format") if I try to boot to the xen kernel - I have Xen installed correctly I believe: [kend@test225: ~]# rpm -qa | grep xen xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5.x86_64 kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5.1.x64.x86_64 xen-libs-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5.x86_64 xen-devel-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5.x86_64 kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5.x86_64 xenwatch-0.5.3-3.el5.x86_64 kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-8.el5.x86_64 kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5.x86_64 kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5.1.x64.x86_64 But I need to nail down this KVM issue as I would rather use full hardware for my virtualization. Problem I have is that I cannot find a source rpm package for kmod-kvm that will work with my kernel. There are instructions on the KVM site on how to build external module for older kernels, and I tried that, but to make a long story short, mt 2.6.18-194 kernel has no available source rpms that I can use for my custom kernel. Can anyone point me to a source package for kmod-kvm that will work with my 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5 kernel base?? I have spent 2 full days digging through packages on the web and I cannot come up with anything. Thinking of just going with trying out Xen instead, but of course I have an dd issue there too. Any help with either of these issues would be very much appreciated! Kickstart - URL command

Hi list, I'm fiddling with CentOS 5.5 and kickstarted installations via cobbler. In my environment I need to install using the HTTP protocol over a proxy. Does anyone know why the URL command doesn't support the --proxy method? I get an Anaconda error message stating that this method is not supported. Even though i found out about that method in documentation. Relevant section in my kickstart: # install system install url --url=http://1.2.3.4/cobbler/ks_mirror/CentOS-5.5-x86_64/ --proxy= http://5.6.7.8:12345 text firstboot --disable reboot Anyone with suggestions? looking for a decent free / Open Source flash media server

Hi all, I hope someone can help me with this one. I am looking for a decent free / Open Source flash media server software which I can run on a Linux server. Adobe's Flash Media Server (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/) is very expensive and not within any reasonable cost range (R40K+). The Fladh Media Server uses the RMTP This is needed to run the following Joomla extension: http://www.joomplace.com/live-conference/live-conference.html which basically allows us to setup a Flash tutorial conference setup, similar to podcasts. We currently use CentOS Linux + cPanel, as well as CentOS + VirtualMin but I'm open to suggestion for other control panels as well if need be. Radeon HD 4550 driver

Upgraded the kernel to the latest, then tried to rebuild the proprietary Catalyst driver for a Radeon HD 4550 on a Dell Optiplex 980. The install dies, with a c error. Anyone else out there succeed in building one on the 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5-x86_64 kernel? I went to the ATI website, and the "installation instructions" include that it needs a) 32 bit software (which? dunno) and b) a couple of Xfree86 packages (huh? why? dunno, probably they haven't updated this page in years). Btw, it's fine for single head, but a relatively ordinary dual-head setup, with what Nvidia calls "individual desktops" ("spanning" seems to mean the same thing on both monitors). The xorg driver seems to work for single head, but no joy with dual head. For that matter, anyone have any contacts? I'm still mousing around the ATI website trying to find an appropriate contact. mark

I got pulled off on some other projects and am just now getting back to this. Evidentally, I had spent too much time looking at this last week. When I opened up /etc/passwd, it was specifly the default group for the user to be 500, not 1000 that I thought I saw. I changed this to 1000, and everything works now.
