advice on using daemontools on centos production servers

Hi advisors , I would some suggestions on using http://cr.yp.to/daemontools.html . My requirements is to use less systems daemon checks in nagios but concentrate more on business / application level checks . We have lots of daemons like below > 1. ) snmpd > 2.) ntp > 3.) SSH > 4.) crond > 5.) php-cgi > 6.) nginx > 7.) Postfix > 8.) wackamole > 9.) spread > 10.) atop > 11.) redis > 12.) taillog-dopa > 13.) taillog-user > 14.) rsyncd ... ETC. We use nagios checks + event-handlers in case of daemon failure . My views is to use daemontool to control all these daemons , and create a single nagios check which scans /service/ directory and alerts for daemons which are getting restarting in unwanted ways. Some of my friends will argue about daemontools being non-unixy and unconventional , But I had good experience with daemontools on around 3000 servers earlier in my previous organization . Please advice what you guys think about daemontools and its pros and crons . Thanks , Saurabh Verma

Has anyone recently started seeing LibClamAV Warning: Cannot prepare for JIT, because it has already been converted to interpreter ? I can't find anything googling for that. mark

X windows won't start after update to autofs

Hello everyone, Maybe this doesn't make sense, but after I updated autofs yesterday and rebooted this morning, X windows won't go. It tries with the old configuration---doesn't work. It tries a fresh config and fails. I can't copy and paste, but it says screens found, but no usable configuration. Couldn't start X server on card 0 Couldn't start X server with old config, (EE) NV(0): No valid initial configuration found (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usuble configuration. Memory warning

Folks, Something to watch out for: in the last few months, we've gotten a bunch of new computers (end of budget year), and several have had serious memory errors. If they were all from one manufacturer, I'd figure it was them, but we have had this happen on a Sun, a Dell, and a Penguin, and the large memory (4G, 8G) in all of them was manufactured by Hynix. mark, about to talk to Dell and Sun

VNC Question

Hi Everybody :) I'm sorry if this is unwanted noise but I'm struggling to find the answer to what is probably a ridiculously simply problem. Setup vncserver but it likes to run as a user (reading parameters from ~/.vnc/xstartup of the user the process runs as). graphics driver

I did installation of CentOS5.5 in text mode and made changes at the following places in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf : section "device" identifier : "vesa" driver:"vesa" section "screen" device:"vesa" Also in the file /etc/inittab I changed id:3:initdefault to id:5:initdefault so that I can boot linux in graphical mode. I had to make the changes in xorg.conf because the visibility of the graphics was so poor that it was impossible to work. The installation was done on Dell Inspiron N5010 with the chipset: Intel(R) HM57 Express chipset LPC interface controller 3B0B which is a part of Mobile intel 5 series The video controller is: Intel (R) HD Graphics Although graphics is there but the resolution and refresh rate are limited to 1024*768 and 0Hz, so I need to find the video driver. I had given "i810" in xorg.conf but that didn't work. Which driver is recommended?

Dell E6410

Just recently bought a Dell E6410 with a Intel® HD Graphics with ExpressCard with I7-640m processor. Having some issues getting a graphical env to work. By just the looks of lspci X is wanting to use the VGA Compatable controller: Intel Corp Core Processor Intergrated graphics controller. Everything else is using Intel Corp Series 5/3400 Series Chipset. Has anyone else had any luck getting similar intel onboard grphics to work? -- Bo Lynch
