CentOS vs. RHEL vs. Oracle Linux ?

Hi, I've been contacted by a local training center specialized in Oracle databases, to train a group of four administrators to use Linux. They're supposed to use Oracle Linux (more exactly "OL5"), which I understand is some specialized version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. I'm reasonably proficient with CentOS. I've been using it exclusively on desktops and servers since 2007 (version 4.3 if I remember correctly), after a few years on Slackware and Debian. I've setup CentOS-based networks in small town halls, public libraries and schools, my dedicated webserver is running the latest CentOS, and I've published a book about basic Linux concepts entirely based on CentOS 5.3. On the other hand, I've never got to work on the "real thing", so to speak. The only time I put my hands on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux server was to retrieve the root password for a distracted client (add init=/bin/bash to the kernel line in GRUB, mount -o remount,rw /, passwd :oD). And I never came near a machine running Oracle Linux. What differences can I expect between a server running Oracle Linux and my average server running CentOS ? As far as I can guess, their "unbreakable" Linux kernel will still be some package called 'kernel' (with the according 'kernel-devel' and 'kernel-headers' packages). Probably Yum will be used as a dependency resolver (will it?), only with different repositories. And for the rest, I except it to work the same, in that I can still use chkconfig, ntsysv, rpm, etc. (what about system-config-securitylevel-tui or similar tools?) PE850 Interrupt conflicts on CentOS 5 and onboard ethernet and pci-e serial

Hello, I have an interrupt conflict between a two port pci-e serial card and the onboard ethernet controllers in a PowerEdge 850. I'm running kernel 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5PAE with bios revision A04. In every instance, the two serial ports have been allocated the same interrupts as the two ethernet controllers. I have tried many kernel boot options, including acpi=off, pci=noirq, acpi=noirq. When I enter the bios, I can see the same interrupts allocated to the serial ports and ethernet controllers. Attempting to change the interrupts manual causes both a nic and a serial port to both change, both to the same interrupt. I have even tried disabling onboard usb and serial with no change. I'm beginning to think the pci-e serial card is broken under linux. I have a similar card running on a PE850 under Windows Server 2003 and there are no such conflicts. CENTOS 5.5 X86 continue get "out of memory" error?????

we just installed CENTOS 5.5 X86 (32 bits) on DELL server. After installed we also apply lated O.S. patches. This server have 64 GB RAM and run "2.6.18-194.26.1.el5PAE #1 SMP ". when I doing "cp", "mv". Hi, Taking this to a new thread. Thoughts on getting a new list started up ? Should it be centos-sysadmin or centos-infra ? Are we going to then restrict it to admin/infra related chatter ? in which case, does the eyeball density on this list reduce for that sort of content ? How about the politics and news stuff that gets posted to this list. And how would those things be addressed with the new admin focused list ? - KB

Grub, pata, and sata

I've just filed bug 0004634. Grub won't install onto my pata drive now that I have a sata drive installed. This is grub 0.97 on CentOS5.5. Has anyone else encountered this? I'm guessing that I can always install Fedora on hda, which should give me a working grub, but I was hoping for something a little less involved. Thanks, Dave Mackay

best way to start and shutdown programs in CentOS?

I have a Java program that I want to start up with every boot, but I'm unsure how to do it. There are two bootup scripts that start manually (script1.sh and script2.sh), and when the server gets shutdown, we have another script that we run (shutdownscript.sh) so that the DB does not get corrupted.
