whats wrong with my internet connection checker script?

$ true && true || echo hi $ true && false || echo hi hi $ false && true || echo hi hi $ false && false || echo hi hi $ ping -W 1 -c 4 google.com >& /dev/null | grep -q "100% packet loss" && ping -W 1 -c 4 www.yahoo.com >& /dev/null | grep -q "100% packet loss" || echo "no internet connection" no internet connection $ ping -W 1 -c 4 google.com >& /dev/null | grep "100% packet loss" $ ping -W 1 -c 4 www.yahoo.com >& /dev/null | grep "100% packet loss" $ ...both sides "false", because they have no output, because google.com and www.yahoo.com is reachable. how come it writes "no internet connection"? [at the longest line] i just want a "oneliner" that checks if theres "internet connection" or no. :\ where did i screw up? 8)

lvm 1 drive fails whole vol data lost

Dear Friends of CentOS, I read a reply by John R Pierce, Re: [CentOS] LVM change disk December 04, 2010 01:30PM "do you realize that if any one of those 4 miscellaneous drives fails, you lose the whole volume?" Can anyone confirm this? and thank you to John above. 2: can you add(extend) a physical hdd with data to a LV without losing the data? 3: can you remove one hdd to add another of same size and file system but with different data? Thanks much. i am about to install and need to know my constraints.

install Centos on ATCA(machine without video card),how??

i can boot with "linux console=ttyS0,9600 text " , all is ok except when come to the "user mode" or "VNC mode". of course , i choose the "user mode" . but it display error "no video card found.. " and install processing can't continue

preparing to migrating to new system

hi all, I will be migrating my mail server from centos 4.8 to 6 when its released. Basically its just a number of users with their passwords. Their mail is downloaded to their clients and not stored on the server. What is the most sensible or correct way to migrate ALL the users to the new system? Way in the past is was just perhaps copy the /etc/passwd file but I know thats not the case anymore. how do I easily recreate their account names etc... on the new machine. Thanks, for any advice. I/O size distribution?

Hello I have read that under Solaris one can use DTrace to get I/O request size distribution on a global scale (also on a per process/pid basis). See for example http://prefetch.net/articles/observeiodtk.html Can anyone recommend an alternative to get similar information under CentOS? I looked into dtrace for linux but it seems still work in progress, even putting aside CDDL issues ... http://www.crisp.demon.co.uk/tools.html Thanks! Antonello

do i need a dedicated ip address for https?

http://help.godaddy.com/article/1054 "# Set up SSL protection on your website." is it an inescapable requirement to have a dedicated [not fix] ip address, when i want to use ssl on my domain? thank you happy Christmas! :)

Collecting data

Hi, I'm developing C plugin for Centos which will be installed as kernel module. The problem is how to collect the data about: CPU Check – Utilization, Model, Number of Cores RAM Check – Total Memory, Free Memory, Memory Load HDD Check – Number of physical HDDs, Number of logical partitions, Total space, Free space Running processes – Total number of processes Logs – system logs such as error logs System uptime Users logged in and last login – total list of users Total network connections Check hardware parts model and number The kernel module will check the status of the OS every 5 minutes. What is the most efficient way to collect these data? Regards Peter
