priorities don't prevent other repos overwritting packages?

Either I've made a mistake in my configuration or else packages from other repos can obsolete core packages For example, I did a "yum update" on some rpmforge packages and saw this: Installing: perl-Date-Manip noarch 5.54-2.el5.rf rpmforge 210 k replacing perl-DateManip.noarch 5.44-1.2.1 perl-IO-Compress noarch 2.024-1.el5.rf rpmforge 242 k replacing perl-Compress-Zlib.i386 1.42-1.fc6 If I try to install the original packages: % yum install perl-Compress-Zlib Loaded plugins: priorities 476 packages excluded due to repository priority protections Setting up Install Process Package perl-Compress-Zlib is obsoleted by perl-IO-Compress, trying to install perl-IO-Compress-2.024-1.el5.rf.noarch instead Package perl-IO-Compress-2.024-1.el5.rf.noarch already installed and latest version Nothing to do % yum install perl-DateManip Loaded plugins: priorities 476 packages excluded due to repository priority protections Setting up Install Process Package perl-DateManip is obsoleted by perl-Date-Manip, trying to install perl-Date-Manip-5.54-2.el5.rf.noarch instead Package perl-Date-Manip-5.54-2.el5.rf.noarch already installed and latest version Nothing to do I have rpmforge with priority=10 I have the centos base and update repositories with priority=1 Have I made a stupid mistake with my configuration? -- rgds Stephen

is yum a complete substitute of rpm?

Dear Centos community, I am new to centos/redhat and I would like to know on a centos system, can I use yum alone to do all package management? I don't want to learn two systems and confuse myself, I understand yum is much better than rpm if is the case? Thank you! Jim

[OT?] diffs between mysql 5.0 and 5.1, and upgrading to mysql 5.1?

being used to mysql 5.1 on my fedora system, i'm suddenly looking after a centos 5.4 box with mysql 5.0.77. before i start digging into the mysql 5.0-5.1 changelog, do i have a lot to worry about in terms of mentally backing up one version? or is simply upgrading the centos box to mysql 5.1 an option? Can this be done with stock centos 4? Hi all, I am a bit confused about the usage of pam_mount. I can just remove the: session optional pam_mount.so from system-auth which seem to work fine. Even the share is unmounted successfully on logout. More oddities with priorities

Following on from my previous, I removed the perl-Date-Manip and re-installed the Centos base perl-DateManip package. When I do a "check-update" then it shows nothing needs to be done, but if I do an "update" then it tries to replace the package! In the following, c5-local, update-local, rpmforge are local rsync'd copies of the base, updates and rpmforge repositories. Hardisk cloning for centos-5.3

Hi, I want to clone my hardisk containing the centos-5.3 OS and its swap region on to new raw hardisk via network either through ssh, tftp or ftp. How do i do that ? Is there any Tool for that or will DD command be sufficient.I know that dd command will have to be used on hardisk with already existing partitions and not on raw disk. Serial Port or USB monitoring / Logging

Dear List, I have a piece of equipment that sends data or reports data via a serial or usb port. I would like to connect this piece of equipment to a serial or usb port of a Centos 5.4 machine and capture the report information. I thought this would be an easy perl task, but since I have not completed the objective ... it has not been easy yet. Do any of you have any perl scripts that do this? I would like to look at your logic either for a serial or usb port. Thanks in advance!!!! Greg Ennis
