eSATA drive enclosure of a full PC?

HI All, I have a dilemma and I would appreciate advice 1. Get a good size case, mobo, processor, etc and put 8 hard drives it in and RAID them. (yes an 8 port SATA mobo). Running CentOS. or 2. Get an eSATA enclosure that has room for 8 or 10 drives and just connect it to box? I know that RAID is not a full proof backup, but I am looking for a solution to store all of my data, projects, music, etc, etc Can I get thoughts for ideas for solutions? Thank You -Jason

Hi,guys: I've been having gnome restart when I've been using firefox. Looking around in diffierent logs i found.. Could someone meet this problem ? I googled around and saw some other people were having a similar issue but with laptops ....

recommendations for SMS/EMS/MMS software simulation?

perhaps an open-ended request, but i'm looking for (if it even exists) some centos 5.4 software that will let me completely simulate the sending and reception of MMS messages on a local network which (AFAICT) would require the simulation of the MMS centre as well (MMSC). so far, i've run across (yum-installable) gammu and i'm just starting to take a look at it. but if anyone out there has already been down that road, i'm open to recommendations. i'm just getting immersed in the world of messaging systems and if there's something that would allow me to simulate all of this on a local network, i would be a deliriously happy puppy. thanks. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Hi John, Yes, I looked into this and I was looking for a solution with a large number of drives, but at a good cost point. /var/log/messages(dmesg) ?

Dear All My CentOS server got hung and when I tried to power cycle it , I checked its /var/log/messages & /var/log/dmesg with respect to the time of fault occurance to see what was really happened . But its 'messages' log does not show anything recorded for about 30 minutes before its recovery after power cycling . Can you please let me know where I can check to find the root cause of failure ? Thank you

unattended fsck on reboot

I want to do a reboot of a couple of systems during our maintenance window and fsck them, but would rather try it from home first and not go to the data center. Then of course rush there like a madman if they don't come back up :-) There was a suggestion in the 2nd thread above that with ext3 this should not be required with proper hardware (my paraphrase). I'm using all IBM stuff - x3550, x3650, x3800 and some of the earlier models like x330. I can't imagine this being an issue. Limiting bandwidth

Greetings, Scenario: Centos box with eth1 (10.0.0.0/24) and eth0 (192.168.0.0/24) segment on eth0 has access to full bandwidth of uplink Both are on 100mbps switches Requirements: bandwith on segment on eth1 needs to be throttled to different speeds - say 32, 64, 128kbps and the such. Required for application performance testing purposes. As usual my girlfriend google is very verbose. (Sometimes I feel there should be utility like googlegrep or something :\ ) I am going through the excellent documentation from: http://linux-ip.net/articles/Traffic-Control-HOWTO LARTC.org Its all a bit too much for me to handle at this point in time and I am a bit pressed for time. Yes, havent worked much on tc / iproute2. In fact not much knowledge in networks in general. Any help appreciated. TIA Regards, Rajagopal

CentOS magic to Active Directory login?

I've been trying to follow samba, centos, ldap, and other documentation to try and get a CentOS 5 box to permit a user to log into an existing Windows 200x Active Directory domain without necessarily having the box as part of the domain. If it has to be part of the domain, that is fine. The user shall have no local account on the box - I want their active directory account to automatically produce their account on the CentOS 5 box, likely with a shell of bash. None of the web pages I've visited thus far have helped me configure my test C5 box to allow me to successfully at least log into the console of my C5 box with my AD credentials. Leads to proper configuration of krb5.conf, ldap config files, smb.conf, nsswitch.conf, and whatever else would be most appreciated. I do have have any control of the Windows domain controller other than limited admin rights, which largely allows me to create computer accounts. Thus, majority of the work must be with the CentOS 5, of which I have root and can rebuild as often as needed. Thanks for any help/leads. Scott

True, that would be each drive on its own port, which is optimal. With 8 ports, I could get 8 x 2tb and and have 8th in RAID10. What about this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=8+x+sata&cid=13835643122069874118&… And just a normal PC with lots of drives? -Jason Some of those eSATA enclosures will use 1x SATA port per HDD, and some even work on USB which is even worse. If you can run each HDD on it's own port, you'll get optimal performance. For a cheap in-office storage, I use these: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&q=icy+dock&cid=704673… It's basically a hot-swap cage, but I need to manually tell the OS that the drive was removed, since it doesn't run on a server back-plane.
