DRBD,GFS2 and GNBD without all clustered cman stuff

Hi all, Where i want to arrive: 1) having two storage server replicating partition with DRBD 2) exporting via GNBD from the primary server the drbd with GFS2 3) inporting the GNBD on some nodes and mount it with GFS2 Assuming no logical error are done in the last points logic this is the situation: Server 1: LogVol09, DRDB configured as /dev/drbd0 replicated to Server 2. DRBD seems to work perfect as cat /proc/drbd Server 2: LogVol09, Secondary for /dev/drbd, cat /proc/drbd is ok What i thought to do was to export via GNBD the /dev/drbd0 to import it on a couple of nodes. Using GFS2 as FS for concurrent usage. I got to format the GFS2 FS on the Server 1 drbd0 device. But was unable to mount it because gfs_controld wasn't accepting connections, i discovered that cman manage gfs_controld. In any case i started it manually and discover that it try to use ccsd daemon which i have not installed. Ok, i do not need to mount it locally so i started configuring GNBD, started manualli the server end stated the export command...again the cman/ccsd problem: gnbd_clusterd: ERROR cannot join cman Now, what i'm asking: am i forced to use all the cluster stuff cman, ccsd...fence...with this configuration? I would like only to use the tools i need: DRDB, GNBD and GFS2 without cluster facilities. Thanks Raffaele

No ulimit for user

vtund error

Hello, I have two hosts with a tunnel closed by vtun, when I reboot a host, the other show the error bellow. unregister_netdevice: waiting for tun0 to become free. openfiler (was: using CentOS as an iSCSI server?)

Here is something I am currently lokoing at, and wondering if you'd considered it or if anyone here has done it. I've got a bunch of existing hardware - really good IBM stuff that is all installed with CentOS (with a few exceptions). We want to move to virtualization, but the direct-attached storage is a bit of an issue because with VMWare ESXi you cannot do some of the fancy stuff like "VMove" (moving a live running server from one host to another). So of course Openfiler comes to mine. However, most of this hardware has pretty significant CPU and RAM horsepower, so just running it as openfiler would be quite wasteful. What I se some people doing is - install ESXi (4.0) onto the bare metal - install openfiler as a virtual machine - give open filer all the disk - serve the disk out to other VMs via openfiler This may seem redundant vs just doing it without openfiler, but as mentioned a lot of the fancy features you only get with virtualized disk. Cron and Cluster

I need an idea on how to accomplish this: I have a cluster that I only want to run cron jobs on when its active. I know the cron script can check for node status, but then I have multiple copies to maintain wheres my existing resources all reference config on the shard fs (httpd/sql etc) so a change on the active node makes that permanent on the next node. Any idea how to do this? Thanks! jlc

bogus error message from yum update for gmime and gmime-sharp

When I do "yum update gmime gmime-sharp" I get: ... --> Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) ... But both of these are already installed: # rpm -q gmime gmime-sharp gmime-2.2.10-5.el5.centos gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos So: # package-cleanup --problems Setting up yum Reading local RPM database Processing all local requires No problems found Running the above "yum update ..." again yields the same bogus error messages. I've had problems with these two packages before. Why can't yum understand rpm for them? NFS freeze when transmitting big files

Hi, I have one old spare PC, a PIII with 128 MB RAM, that I use as a spare file server. I have a headless CentOS 5 install on it, and a 2 terabyte external USB harddisk. The machine is in my basement (because it's quite loud), and I'm using what's called "CPL" here (Courant Porteur), which is basically Ethernet over 220V power lines. It's much slower than normally cabled Ethernet, but it works OK. I setup an NFS server on this machine, with the big 2TB storage on the external disk. On the first floor, on my main PC, I setup a consistent mounting of the NFS shares in /etc/fstab, and it works. Now here's the problem. Some of the files are quite big, usually movie files that can make up to 4 GB. More often than not, when I cut/paste such a file from my local harddisk to the server, it's quite slow (understandably, due to the slow CPL connection), but then the operation freezes in the middle, the cursor is unresponsive, even [Ctrl+Alt+Backspace] doesn't work, and I have to do a hard reboot. Now I wonder what this phenomenon can be due to. Some strange bottleneck effect due to either lack of RAM to the server or the slow network or both? Any ideas? Niki

root privilleges momentarily

Hi guys, I'm searching for a way to have root privileges momentarily like on ubuntu with the sudo <user> <command> I tried su - <command> and su -l root <command> on my CentOS server but it doesn't work how should I do ? sorry for the disturbance I'm new in RH Linux distro -- Cordialement, / Greetings, Georghy FUSCO

Release 6?

Since 5.5 is now out from Red Hat and most likely our amazing CentOS team has already jumped on that, is there any word on Release 6? IIRC it's already a year out of date (base was supposed to be Fedora 10), so I have to wonder. I didn't see anything jump out at me on the Red Hat site, so - anyone? Thanks. mhr

CUPS and virtual interfaces

I've got a server with multiple virtual interfaces. Now, I only want CUPS to advertise on *one* - eth0, not eth0:1 or eth0:gad.... Looking at the CUPS manual, and cuppsd.conf man page, I see BrowseAllow, but the entries are not clear enough for me to understand what they mean. (Yeah, I know the docs are better than they were - read ESR's rant about it from a few years ago.) Specifically, I *think* I'd like to use BrowseAllow @IF, but I can't figure out if that should be BrowseAllow @IF(eth0) or BrowseAllow @IF(hostname) Also, if it's interface name, and there are multiple virtual interfaces on eth0, and I use the first of the two lines, above, will that *not* also apply to the VIs on eth0? mark
