Striped, then Mirrored So: 8 x 1.5tb = 12tb RAID 5 = 12tb - 1.5tb for parity data = 10.5tb space available RAID 10 = 4 x 1.5 = 6tb - 1.5tb for parity data = 4.5tb per stripe then mirror it. but with RAID 10, data is safe after many types of failures.

Multiple FreeNX servers and SSH ports

Hi, I've setup a small LAN of two desktops running CentOS 5 in a medical office. Both are connected to the Internet via a small modem/router. Recently I played around with FreeNX on my own desktop, and I'd like to install it on these two computers. On my PC, I just redirected port 22 in the router, so SSH (and thus FreeNX) requests from the outside get redirected to my desktop PC. (And yes, I have a strong password :oD) I'd like to handle the two PCs from the medical office remotely with FreeNX. I figured that the best way to distinguish them would be to assign a different port for SSH to each of them, and then redirect each of the ports respectively. 1) How do I choose different port numbers for SSH ? Any conventions or caveats for this ? 2) How do I configure these different ports ? By that, I mean : how do I tell SSH to use them instead of port 22 ? Cheers, Niki

Can anyone provide a tutorial or advice on how to configure a software RAID 5 from the command-line (since I did not install Gnome)? I have 8 x 1.5tb Drives. -Jason

non-root access to log files

Hi, I would like to give read-only access to mysql and apache-http server log files to a non-root user. I can modify group or other permissions. But is there any other way you can suggest? Can I update it in user's home dir? -- CS.

awk global replacement only after keyword

Trying to avoid a perl script which wouldn't be hard, but I am looking for an awk one liner that does a replacement, but only after it sees a key word on some line. Anyone know of that's easy to do? Thanks! jlc

gphoto2 and Nikon Coolpix 990/995

Hi all, I've got a CentOS 5.4 box and am trying to use it to control either of the two old cameras we've got, one being Nikon Coolpix 990 and the other Nikon Coolpix 995. Accessing either I get the following message: ---------------------------------------------------- *** Error *** An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not claim the USB device'): Could not claim interface 0 (Operation not permitted). Make sure no other program or kernel module (such as sdc2xx, stv680, spca50x) is using the device and you have read/write access to the device. ERROR: Could not capture. *** Error (-53: 'Could not claim the USB device') *** ---------------------------------------------------- Any idea what this could be about? By the way, about a year ago I did manage to use a Linux machine to control one of these cameras (the 990, I believe). Thanks in advance. Boris.

Kickstart 8TB partition limit?

I found a kickstart installation with part pv.100000 --size=1 --grow volgroup vol0 pv.100000 creates a partition with a size of 8TB even though more than 9TB is available. I need to go in manually with gdisk to destroy the partition and recreate it with all available space. No filesystem is specified be cause want to use xfs, which kickstart does not support out of the box. This is under 5.2, but the 5.3/5.4 relnotes do not indicate that this problem has been fixed.
