All, I've got a machine running CentOS 5.3 and this machine has got 2 - built-in 1 Gig NICs and a expansion card with 4 - 100 Meg NICs. For whatever reason at install time, it made the expansion card eth0 through eth3 and the internal ports eth4 and eth5. And by default the 'machine' is known on the network by the eth0 NIC, so my throughput is limited to 100 Mb. How can I force the internal NICs to be eth0 and eth1? Thanks, Gene Poole

So now you pick one ip address the router assigns from it's dhcp address block and create a static ip configuration for your eth0 nic, If the routers dhcp address block is 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.100 pick 192.168.2.10 for the ip. Now eth0 needs a default gateway which is your routers address maybe like 192.168.2.1. Now eth0 needs a primary and secondary DNS entry. If the isp only has one then use one else you can use the default gateway address of the router but not recomended because you are having problems so I think you need the real dns. If you log into the router you will see or find the dns entries you need and the dhcp block that is assigned. John

Power consumption monitoring

Hi, I have quite a few low-end development/test servers running continuously and I would like to better manage their power consumption. I have found interesting information on how to perform CPU scaling (e.g. [1] or [2]). But I cannot find if there is a way to (software) monitor power consumption on CentOS (or other such data like CPU temperature, fan speed etc.). What I read so far is that support is quite limited in this kernel (e.g. PowerTop not providing useful information). Before I start tuning I would like to be able to measure whether my changes are having any impact at all. Slightly OT: which hardware for CentOS file server (Samba, 2 To storage, 50 users)?

Hi, The language lab from the local university has contacted me. They'd like to have a low-cost file server for storing all their language video files. They have a mix of Windows, Mac OS X and even Linux clients, roughly 50 machines. The files are quite big, and they calculated a total amount of 2 To of storage. I'm not very proficient with hardware, meaning either I'm dealing with remote servers in some datacenter, or otherwise I install CentOS desktops on any hardware people throw at me. Since the aim is lowcost, would it be wrong to install that fileserver on a no-name desktop PC with a 64bit processor and enough RAM, and then simply put 2 x 2 To hard disks in it, either with a mirroring RAID (can never remember which does what in 0, 1 and 5) or some rsync script regularly copying over the first disk to the second? Or do you have something more apt to suggest? Cheers from South France, Niki

Getting Domainkeys, dkim, and SMTP-AUTH/TLS to play nicely together in sendmail

A while back I struggled to get Domainkeys and DKIM to work properly on my little home server. While I'm sure they weren't necessary in a strict sense, it not only enabled me to learn about the technology but allowed for more of a verification of the email coming from my server. And so this week I figured: "Hey, this has been working without a problem for a while; it must be time to screw with something else." Hence my effort to enable SMTP submissions over port 587. At the very least, with some ISPs blocking traffic to port 25, this seemed to be a good idea (as well as providing a better method for sending email using my server from outside my home LAN). I've read a number of write-ups of SMTP AUTH, including the information at sendmail.org. I've run into a snag, however, with the .pem certificate that is used for the DK stuff. The conventional wisdom seems to be to run domainkeys/dkim as a user other than root, and a .pem certificate is required. Therefore, to get this to run properly, the permissions on the certificate need to me 600 or 400, owned by this user. All well and good so far, except that STARTTLS doesn't like this: STARTTLS=server: file /var/db/domainkeys/mail.key.pem unsafe: permission denied When I telnet to the server, port 587, and issue an EHLO, I see neither AUTH nor TLS in the response. The sendmail.mc file contains the line: define(`localCERT',`/ver/db/domainkeys/mail.key.pem')dnl So if there's a different line I can add to indicate to TLS/AUTH that it should use a different cert (or, rather, the same one copied to a different location with different permissions...) I don't know it. Anyone ever run into this before? -Don Levey

DRBD,GFS2 and GNBD without all clustered cman stuff

Hi all, Where i want to arrive: 1) having two storage server replicating partition with DRBD 2) exporting via GNBD from the primary server the drbd with GFS2 3) inporting the GNBD on some nodes and mount it with GFS2 Assuming no logical error are done in the last points logic this is the situation: Server 1: LogVol09, DRDB configured as /dev/drbd0 replicated to Server 2. DRBD seems to work perfect as cat /proc/drbd Server 2: LogVol09, Secondary for /dev/drbd, cat /proc/drbd is ok What i thought to do was to export via GNBD the /dev/drbd0 to import it on a couple of nodes. Using GFS2 as FS for concurrent usage. I got to format the GFS2 FS on the Server 1 drbd0 device. But was unable to mount it because gfs_controld wasn't accepting connections, i discovered that cman manage gfs_controld. In any case i started it manually and discover that it try to use ccsd daemon which i have not installed. Ok, i do not need to mount it locally so i started configuring GNBD, started manualli the server end stated the export command...again the cman/ccsd problem: gnbd_clusterd: ERROR cannot join cman Now, what i'm asking: am i forced to use all the cluster stuff cman, ccsd...fence...with this configuration? I would like only to use the tools i need: DRDB, GNBD and GFS2 without cluster facilities. Thanks Raffaele

timeout problem

ClamAV "clamscan" command using huge amount of RAM

We have a perl cgi script that accepts uploaded files and runs clamscan on them. While observing the system performance I noticed that each clamscan process consumes up to 250MB of RAM. Is this normal for ClamAV? This seems like an enormous amount of RAM, for simply scanning one file for viruses.
