vsftpd writing files 2 times - once as root

I have configured my vsftpd with virtual users all of which are mapped to a system user for file system permissions (let's call him 'ftpsystemuser'). That means, if someone uploads files they are writting using owner and group of the system user: > -rw-r--r-- 1 ftpsystemuser ftpsystemuser 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr?fungen.doc Now we have the phenomenon that some files and folders are written twice, one instance as it should be and the other with owner and group 'root' and with html-like file name syntax. For example: > -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr%FCfungen.doc > -rw-r--r-- 1 ftpsystemuser ftpsystemuser 19968 16. Mär 11:24 Termine > Leistungspr?fungen.doc This looks like a security problem: the process writing these files should not be able to do this as root, should it? And then it is very annoying. Has anyone seen that? Is that something I can configure off somehow? Any hint or help is appreciated, any deeper insight very welcome. Dirk

ssh-agent

Yesterday or Friday, don't remember, I happened to be looking at my processes on my machine, and discovered I had a number of ssh-agents running (all mine), from different days. I killed all but the current day's. Now, I log out every single night. I checked the next day, and sure enough, the one I started the previous day was still running, and I could not only use ssh-add, and it worked. I didn't think of it this morning until just now, but tomorrow I'll log back in, and see if I even need to use ssh-add. If this is the case, I am not happy. This is, to me, a security hole, and *not* what I expected, nor what the man page seems to lead me to believe. Bug? mark

Cron and Cluster

I need an idea on how to accomplish this: I have a cluster that I only want to run cron jobs on when its active. I know the cron script can check for node status, but then I have multiple copies to maintain wheres my existing resources all reference config on the shard fs (httpd/sql etc) so a change on the active node makes that permanent on the next node. Any idea how to do this? Thanks! jlc

compiling FahMON for Centos?

Hi all! Thanks to those who pointed me to wxwidgets packages for centos! Hi All, I have this following issue in SELinux. I did what instruction said but the security context has still never changed. Do I need to create local SELinux module? bogus error message from yum update for gmime and gmime-sharp

When I do "yum update gmime gmime-sharp" I get: ... --> Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) Error: Missing Dependency: gmime = 2.2.10-5.el5.centos is needed by package gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos.i386 (installed) ... But both of these are already installed: # rpm -q gmime gmime-sharp gmime-2.2.10-5.el5.centos gmime-sharp-2.2.10-5.el5.centos So: # package-cleanup --problems Setting up yum Reading local RPM database Processing all local requires No problems found Running the above "yum update ..." again yields the same bogus error messages. I've had problems with these two packages before. Why can't yum understand rpm for them? Problem updating VM

Hi, I am trying to bring one of my CentOS 5 VMs up to date. I have run: yum clean all yum update yum yum clean all yum update python* rpm* yum clean all without any problems or error messages. Now when I try to run yum update, I get the following: [root@tusker ~]# yum update There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: No module named cElementTree Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. Hi Folks, I'd like to use "start-stop-daemon" on my centos-machine. I know , it's debian-like. But I can't find "startproc" on my machine nor in the repos. NFS freeze when transmitting big files

Hi, I have one old spare PC, a PIII with 128 MB RAM, that I use as a spare file server. I have a headless CentOS 5 install on it, and a 2 terabyte external USB harddisk. The machine is in my basement (because it's quite loud), and I'm using what's called "CPL" here (Courant Porteur), which is basically Ethernet over 220V power lines. It's much slower than normally cabled Ethernet, but it works OK. I setup an NFS server on this machine, with the big 2TB storage on the external disk. On the first floor, on my main PC, I setup a consistent mounting of the NFS shares in /etc/fstab, and it works. Now here's the problem. Some of the files are quite big, usually movie files that can make up to 4 GB. More often than not, when I cut/paste such a file from my local harddisk to the server, it's quite slow (understandably, due to the slow CPL connection), but then the operation freezes in the middle, the cursor is unresponsive, even [Ctrl+Alt+Backspace] doesn't work, and I have to do a hard reboot. Now I wonder what this phenomenon can be due to. Some strange bottleneck effect due to either lack of RAM to the server or the slow network or both? Any ideas? Niki

hello i have copied some sites from another server to cent os but i have faced with that non latin chars in sites seems like -> " ? " firstly i think it is an sql problem or encoding but i see that file manager see file names like : VBULLET�N4 r�tbe and i decide to create a folder with the same non latin char ü şşşüüüiiiğğğıııı it worked so how could i repair this copied fle names end file encodings because it has problems also while reading by php and publishing the same thanks

Hi, I found 2 identical drives lying around and put them into a system. When booting from a Centos 5.x installer, and when being presented with the formatting option (disk druid), it says I have 1 volume of; mamapper/isw_bdihgcgahe_Volume0p2 I can't seem to get rid of it. I have 2 physical disks but disk druid is seeing 1 volume thats the same size as one of the 2 identical drives. I've tried everything from yanking the 2nd drive, installing Centos with 1 drive, then installing the second drive and doing; dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb ... to even installing diff OS's like Ubuntu and Windows which see 2 individual disks where I repartition/reformat the drives. Seems as though I can't truly re write a part of the master boot record or some other area. I'm pretty feeble with this crap so can any one help me get a clue on what to do? These drives may have been in some hard ware raided system of the past, am unsure and no one here knows. This is really driving me crazy!!!!! - aurf

Watching a file using auditd

Hi, I am using auditd to monitor files for changes (read and write actually). I found that when auditd is running, it will correctly report files that are read, but will not report changes to a file that is being monitored. But if I stop auditd and load audit rules using auditctl, it will work as expected. Here's the audit rule: -w /tmp/audit-test -p rw -k __monitored__ What am I missing here? Thanks.

Hi, From what I gather, OpenLDAP on Centos 5.x pulls LDAP changes from central LDAP server to a secondary LDAP server. So in other words, you can have your second LDAP server pull the db based on either; type=refreshOnly which mean the pull interval will happen when ever you specify or; type=refreshAndPersist which mean after a pull, keep the pipe open for any changes made. Now in Ubuntu one can have there primary LDAP push the changes to all the secondaries. Can I somehow enable push in Centos OpenLDAP because pull seems pretty lame in this case. I tried but to no avail. Hope the answer isn't "Son, thats just the way it iz". - aurf

Enlightenment E17 on CentOS 5.x ?

Hi, Anyone knows how to install E17 on CentOS 5 ? Maybe there are packages on some third party repo out there ? I thought about building it from Fedora SRPMS, but before giving this a spin, I thought I'd rather ask first. AFAIK, the CentOS-based Yellow Dog distribution uses E17 as main window manager / desktop environment. I remember having tried out Enlightenment - I think it was in 2007 or so - on Slackware and I've been pretty stunned by how less system resources it consumed while looking impressive at the same time. Could not retrieve mirror list while using yum command

Hi I wanted to download and install the net-snmp package. Usually on my other CentOS boxes i use the following command to do it: yum install net-snmp I was able to successfully install net-snmp on 4 of my CentOS boxes but not on one of them. It reports me the following error message: [root@localhost yum.repos.d]# yum install net-snmp Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Determining fastest mirrors Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=5&arch=i386&repo=os error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (110, 'Connection timed out')> Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base Other output that can be some use is : [root@localhost yum.repos.d]# ls CentOS-Base.repo CentOS-Media.repo Can someone please let me know what the issue is ? and how to get it working ? Since 5.5 is now out from Red Hat and most likely our amazing CentOS team has already jumped on that, is there any word on Release 6? IIRC it's already a year out of date (base was supposed to be Fedora 10), so I have to wonder. I didn't see anything jump out at me on the Red Hat site, so - anyone? Thanks. mhr

System and Server Status help ?

dear all, i can't count the times that webmin came to my rescue. whenever i face a dead end in doing something through CLI i always turn to webmin.. though at the moment i wanna learn how to do things through cli instead of relying on webmin as i said.. especially "System and Server Status" theres a module that supports such a thing where i can set monitors that checks specific services or directories or... and reports the output.. so i wanna do this through command line.. any help ? i've checked crontab -l and it doesnt list anything that i've set in webmin so where is it and how to do it through cli ? _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. CUPS and virtual interfaces

I've got a server with multiple virtual interfaces. Now, I only want CUPS to advertise on *one* - eth0, not eth0:1 or eth0:gad.... Looking at the CUPS manual, and cuppsd.conf man page, I see BrowseAllow, but the entries are not clear enough for me to understand what they mean. (Yeah, I know the docs are better than they were - read ESR's rant about it from a few years ago.) Specifically, I *think* I'd like to use BrowseAllow @IF, but I can't figure out if that should be BrowseAllow @IF(eth0) or BrowseAllow @IF(hostname) Also, if it's interface name, and there are multiple virtual interfaces on eth0, and I use the first of the two lines, above, will that *not* also apply to the VIs on eth0? mark

Unable to get software using Yum

Hi I am new to CentOS and been into Linux for about 3 months now. I first started off with fedora and also trying my hands on CentOS now. Basically i used yum to download softwares on the fedora box. I mainly require the snmp agent for my linux boxes so as to test my network management product. On some of the CentOS boxes the following command worked for me : yum install net-snmp it installed the snmp agent for me but on others i am finding it hard to install.
