Migrating away from Nagios

I'd try Zenoss. I wrote a big paper comparing Nagios, OpenNMS and Zenoss ( http://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/open_source_mgmt_options.html ) - it's nearly 2 years back now but many of the basics are the same. At that time, I plumped for Zenoss but, to be fair, my main negative on OpenNMS was that it is written in Java - it did pretty-well everything I needed. On the Zenoss front, my main winges were the quality and reliability of the documentation and the code. Zenoss has done a HUGE amount of work on code reliability since then and the documentation is coming along. It runs Nagios plugins if you need that, and will use SNMP, WMI and ssh as protocols to talk to a device. The community is very active and, although Zenoss also have a commercial offering (Enterprise) as well as the free Core, we still seem to get very good air-time from the developers to help resolve issues and to take input from the community. I didn't know about that, but the first googled hit says you are supposed to be able to write reusable tests in a human-readable language which sounds way too unrealistic to ever work. And I want a tool that understands network equipment natively, not just it's own clients on only the hardware/OS's where you are able to run them. I can understand putting off testing OpenNMS back in the day when you had to get your own Sun JVM which was particularly painful on CentOS, but it has been bundled in the yum repo for a while now. And maybe someday enough bugs will be shaken out of the version of openjdk in Centos that it won't be needed... ----- Original Message ----- Hi, Has anyone looked at using icinga ? Migrating away from Nagios

I have to rebuild a new Nagios box and thought this might be a good time to migrate away. I use snmp mostly for everything but with the fork Nagios endured I wonder about putting any more effort into the project. I probably should look at OpenNMS again, but the other options I think might work are Icinga (Should be trivial to migrate) or Zenoss or maybe even Zabbix? Anyone have experience in Nagios and care to share comparisons with similar projects with strong community involvement? Also, anyone currently running OpenNMS that can comment on the learning curve and level of flexibility coming from a Nagios user? Thanks! jlc

Samba3x daily logged errors with Win7 clients

In the course of upgrading from CentOS 5.4 to CentOS 5.5 I changed from using the samba (v3.0.x) packages to the samba3x (v3.3.8) packages, mostly because the newer version was said to better support Win7. The Samba server services Linux, WinXP, and Win7 clients. Now I get many, many errors logged to the Samba logs shortly after 3:00 AM, but only from the Win7 clients. I get roughly 430 sets of these messages in a twenty-second (!) period: [2010/05/25 03:17:36, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(748) create_connection_server_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED These errors are never seen in the Samba logs that track the Linux and WinXP clients, only the Win7 clients. I don't run virus scans or anything else (that I know of) on the Win7 machines in the middle of the night, but I do have the usual cron jobs running on the CentOS server around that time. Could be related to log rotation or something like that? I haven't seen a loss of connectivity, but then I don't use the client machines at 3:15AM. If there is a brief connection failure I wouldn't know it. I used my old (Samba 3.0.x) config file, user definitions and password database when I made the switch to the new (Samba 3.3.8) server and the newer code didn't seem to have any complaints with them. The client shares seem to work without any problems. Any thoughts on what could be generating all these errors? Thanks.

Kernel independent OCFS2 packages for RHEL, Scientific Linux and CentOS

Hi, I would like to announce a set of OCFS2 kABI-tracking kernel module packages for RHEL5, Scientific Linux 5 and CentOS-5 and kernels. These packages have been introduced into the ELRepo testing repository (http://elrepo.org/) You can find these packages at: http://elrepo.org/linux/testing/el5/ The ELRepo project is a community project providing various additional kernel modules for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and derivative kernels that aim to be kernel independent. Next to this set of OCFS 1.4.7 kernel modules the project provides dozens of kmod RPM packages and hundreds of kernel modules for a variety of hardware and kernel functionality. In this case we are looking for OCFS2 users willing to test these packages and provide feedback and support in our support channels for future users. If you deliver more than a few emails to the outside world, especially if a good portion of those go to Yahoo, you may want to read this message: http://marc.info/?l=postfix-users&m=127689518629249&w=2 Actually, read the whole thread, it's interesting and the discussion still continues: http://marc.info/?t=127619611600001&r=1&w=2 TLDR: The 2.3.3 Postfix version that comes with RH / CentOS 5 doesn't do delivery rate control very well and has a habit of annoying some email providers. A simple upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.7.0, no config changes, can improve delivery rate by 50% in some cases (e.g. if you deliver thousands of emails to Yahoo). Increasing NFS Performance

Greetings all- I have a CentOS 5 (Final) system that is serving up content to several other hosts via NFS. The amount of data transferred is rather small as most of the files are under 100kb and each export has maybe 100 files that are accessed regularly. I'm finding that as I add more hosts accessing the NFS server, the performance seems to be getting poorer. There are obvious delays when doing simple 'ls' on an NFS mounted directory. The mounts are all done on the local LAN (100mbit FDX), all on the same broadcast domain, no routing. One of the clients is a physical CentOS 5 node, the rest (5-6 total) are OpenVZ containers also running CentOS 5. The NFS server is a Dell PE2950 loaded with 7.2K SATA drives. While the disks aren't exactly performance grade, the bottleneck does not seem to be the disks as access on the NFS server itself is 'normal'. Here are the items I've found so far that are told to increase performance. Since this is a production system, I have yet to try these: 1. Increase the number of instances of NFS running. (As found in /etc/sysconfig/nfs) 2. Try sync vs async behavior in mount parameters on clients 3. rmem_default and wmem_default parameters 4. rsize and wsize parameters (Dependent on MTU. Currently, mine is default at 1500) These are the items I'm planning to try but before I dive in (especially during a late night maintenance period...), I was hoping the list members brighter than me could give some comments on the above items and/or suggest some other things I might try. MiscFixed fonts in CentOS 5.5

Hi, I just did a fresh install of CentOS 5.5, as usual : base system, X Window system, GNOME, and then the apps I need. The MiscFixed fonts don't seem to be available in GNOME Terminal anymore. Has the package been renamed? Any idea where they went? It's my favourite font for the terminal. Cheers, Niki
