You're right to say PAE goes to 64GB although in the past various distros had kernels compiled for different max addresses for various reasons. 4GB address space still applies to 32 bit apps. To use more than 4GB tricks as such (http://www.puschitz.com/TuningLinuxForOracle.shtml#ConfiguringVeryLargeMemo…) need to be used. :) I haven't had to use these kinds of tricks for years since every machine I encounter has 64 bits and Oracle runs nicely on them perfectly happily. I miss reading through Puschitz's tips & tricks. Lately all Oracle versions run pretty much out of the box on CentOS/Upstream. No sense of satisfaction from seeing it running after battling with it for hours. :)

boot process glitch due to missing 2nd disk

I just installed centos on a Dell that used to have 2 internal disks, but I removed one just before the install. Now when I boot it, it stops and outputs a message complaining about the missing disk and I have to hit F1 to get it to continue booting. Is there some bios setting that is causing this? Obviously, I'd like it to just forget about the missing disk and go ahead and boot with just one, the one that was present when I installed the OS. I want to RTFM, but I'm not really certain where to start, it's outside my comfort zone. mahalo, Dave

Hello after several days of searching, I have not found a definitive answer to the problem samba Migrating from 3.0.x to 3.3.x. (Migrating from 3.0.x to 3.3.x Can Fail to Update passdb.tdb Correctly (bug # 6195) . passdb.tdb break occurs in the file where the new samba starts. Any suggestions or someone going through the same problem? (I'm running samba 3.0.28 with upgrade to 3.5.4 (Sernet repo) []´s Camun.

directory permissions set to 600?

Hello all, Today, I ran across a directory in /etc/ on one of our servers whose permissions where set to 600 (drw-------) with root being the owner. The directory is for the firewall package for the server, so it is not something malicious. Checking some other systems, they also have this directory and the permissions on those servers is also 600, so it isn't just a messed up permissions on this one machine. What is the difference between permissions of 600 and 700 for a directory, that is owned by root (group root)? redundant networked secure file system recommendation

Hi all, We are currently running a NFS-based server centric setup. I would like to set up something where I can easily have more than one redundant server, security/authentication (this part seems a little flaky with NFS, at least did several years ago), with the capability to easily add/remove servers as necessary, take redundant servers down for maintenance, etc. Total volume we expect to run on the server side will be somewhere between 10-30 TB. The servers will most likely be CentOS machines, the clients mostly Linux machines with some Macs and possibly Windows (the latter part not that important). Any insight, thoughts and recommendations will be much appreciated. Thanks. Boris.

disabling touchpad in CentOS 5.5

I've HP 520 laptop. I installed CentOS 5.5 a few days back. The laptop has some weird placing of touchpad that is frustrating me while typing. Please advise me how to disable touchpad on CentOS 5.5. -- Regards, - samoak.

DSL battling rojter - help!

My internet connection is through a Siemens Speedstream 4100 DSL modem connected to AT&T (sbcglobal.net), and a Dlink WBR-2310 router. Late last night, I changed the administrative password on the router, and for some reason it didn't take right, so I had to reset the router to get the password cleared. Unfortunately, this also lost all my connection settings to the DSL, and I lost the internet for a while. After some effort and a couple of phone calls to AT&T technical support, I determined the following: 1. If I connect my CentOS (main) box to the DSL modem, I can log into the modem and check all the settings, and I can ping sites on the web from there, but I can't actually get any web pages to load. This is using Firefox 3.6.4 (the L&G). 2. If I connect a WinXP box to the modem, it gets to the web without any trouble. 3. If I connect the router to the modem and run the machines through the router, no one gets to the web. I managed to get it to a point where I could acquire an IP address, but nothing on the web was visible. I'll figure out the router problem one way or another, but it really concerns me that I couldn't get to the web from my CentOS box at all. Before the router password fiasco, everything was working absolutely perfectly, and I did not change ANY settings on my machines. Now, I do have a line in /etc/hosts that sets my machine id, and its IP address to 192.168.0.100, which is what it normally should be for access through the router as it is the primary machine on it. (I need that because my VMWare SMB is set up to use that for connections between my virtual XP machine and my CentOS host.) Could that be the problem with internet access directly through the DSL modem? If so, how do I change this to ensure that the hostname is set properly but the IP address matches whatever the DSL modem gives back? How do I then also ensure that the hostname and address are set right so my host-VMWare samba connection still work? Otherwise, what? Thanks. Mark

Trigger after yum update

Hello, we have installed non-repository based software on our centos servers (e.g. vmware tools). Each time we do 'yum update' we have to run several scripts to check if these software works after update. Sometimes we forget ... It it possible to configure any sort of triggers which will run automatically after 'yum update' ?
