Manually mounting partitions in "linux rescue" mode

I boot from the installation DVD, with an already existing CentOS 5.5 system on my hard disks. I have separate boot, root, and home partitions. I have moved the boot partition and now I need to re-initialize grub from rescue mode. Attempting to use 'rescue mode" to automatically mount my system under /mnt/sysimage eventally fails with an error message, which essentially says 'mount error' and nothing else. I am then put at a command prompt as root. So now I decide to manually mount my partitions at /mnt/sysimage and then do a chroot to /mnt/sysimage. This succeeds and when I look at my files they are there. I now try 'grub' and the 'grub' shell comes up. I now attempt the 'grub' command: root (hd0,9) only to be met with: Error 21: Selected disk does not exist. I do not know what this means and how I can correct it. Does anybody know what is going on ? One thing I am concerned about is that when I booted from the DVD and was eventually put at the command prompt, I saw there were devices in the /dev subdirectory but after I did the chroot, there were no devices in the new root's /dev subdirectory although when I had previosuly booted into CentOS 5.5 on my hard disk off course they were there. The other thing I noticed is that after the 'chroot' the 'mount' command showed only my root partition mounted on /dev/sdb8 where it actually exists ( along with sysfs and proc which I mounted from the old root ). But despite this there are no subdirectories under the new root's /dev. I am just trying to re-initialize 'grub' so I can boot my CentOS 5.5 system again. There must be a way to successfully do this from the installation DVD. If somebody can give me the steps to manually mount my partitions and succeed it would be very much appreciated.

CentOS to RedHat and vice versa

Has anyone ever tried to mass replace installed RedHat RPMS with their equivalent CentOS versions or vice versa? I was thinking of generating a list of all packages and then running RPM or yum with a 'replace' option. The reason for doing this: Years ago I was tasked with building a RHEL4 system. Budgeting, time constraints, the lunar cycle, etc.., prevented the purchase of an equivalent development environment. So CentOS was used for the development/test system. It sufficed for several years. Now I need to make them as close to identical as possible which means registering the development system in RHN and making it "standard". I've seen posts that RHEL -> CentOS is at least possible. That is, take a RHEL system and get it to update via YUM and CentOS repositories. I have not seen the reverse, however.

mirrors down?

Just went to update a couple systems this morning, and first one machine took nearly 15 min to find the mirrors (and it should be getting it all from our own repo, actually), and then the next one showed about 8-10 mirrors down, including Harvard and VCU. Anyone know what's going on? mark

how to dual boot centos with redhat?

Introduction and request for help with virtualization

Good morning everyone. This is my first post to this list. I am very new to Linux so please bear with me. Also, English is not my first language so please excuse me if I am unclear. I am trying to install CentOS Linux operating system in a virtualization setup. I have already built four host machines with CentOS 5.5 and KVM virtualization. I can install fine if I do a manual installation. I am now trying to automate the process. To this goal, I have create multiple LVMs inside my new volume group. The name of the volume group is vmstorage_vg. The problem occurs when I try to run the installation. I found a script via google: #!/bin/sh virt-install \ -n calcnode01 \ -r 1024 \ -f /dev/vmstorage_vg/calcnode01 \ --cdrom=/software/iso/CentOS-5.5_x86_64-boot.iso \ --accelerate \ --vnc \ -x "ks=ftp://192.168.0.101/pub/ks/calcnode01.ks ip=192.168.0.101 netmask=255.255.255.0 dns=192.168.0.20 gateway=192.168.0.1 text console=ttyS0" When I start this script from the SSH terminal it starts but I cannot see anything being installed. I entered the virsh console and see the calcnode01 entry if I do a list. If I try to connect using virsh I do not see anything. The kickstart was created from the anaconda file created from the manual installation. I enabled the options to create the filesystems. I think the installation is waiting on some input but I cannot see any console. I have tried with and without the "console=ttyS0" option. Thank you everyone for your time.

Kerberized NFS4 w/AD 2008 R2

Is anyone currently using CentOS 5.5 with 2008 R2 AD authentication and a fully Kerberized NFSv4? If so would you mind sharing your configuration with me? I have been able to successfully get it working with Windows 2003 as discussed earlier on the list http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2010-July/096374.html With the exception that I had to use dynamic UIDs on the machine since we don't have Services for UNIX installed. Instead of going with a long drawn out certification of Windows 2003 R2 w/SFU, we plan to target our deployment in line with our Windows 2008 R2 campus deployment. I have followed everything that I did with Windows 2003 to get it working but NFSv4 w/Kerberos doesn't seem to work with 2008 R2 at all. No matter what I try I consistently get WARNING: Client not found in Kerberos database while getting initial ticket for principle NFS/hostname@DOMAIN using keytab or ERROR: No credentials found for connection to server any help would be appreciated. I've been banging my head against a wall for a while now and may have damaged to many brain cells to see what's going wrong. -- James A. force b/w printing

Has anyone an idea, how to force users to print b/w on a color printer. We are in the process to deploy color printers to some of our offices where they use centos 5.5 as their OS. They need the printers to print some advertisement material. But for everything else, they don't need it. And because of the costs of the color printing we would like to force them to use B/W where not explicitly necessary. Is there a way to force a printer driver to be just B/W even if it is a color printer. So i could install a second color printer which would only be available to a special print user.

yum doesn't exit

Running "yum update", yum appears to perform fine and appears to finish but continues to reside in memory: ... kernel panic not syncing fatal exception due to reiserfs -- rebooted properly on ext3

Hi we had one of our mail servers , going on kernel panic mode ( not syncing fatal exception) ... cause /var/queue/postfix was on reiserfs part .. it has not been giving us any isssue quite some time , but yesterday and today it went on Kernel panic mode , when we hashed out the reiserfs part it booted properly .. we formated the part^ on ext3 later and things working fine now . Could any one have a idea why this could have happened .
