One quick-and-dirty way to check threads for any process is to use the ncurses-based 'htop' utility. I much prefer this to 'top' for several reasons, including its ability to hide/display kernel threads, hide/display user threads (in a different color if you like), display with vertical and horizontal scrolling, assign processor affinity on the fly, ptrace/strace processes, and a lot more. It's in Dag Wieers' rpmforge repository for CentOS. The suggestions offered in this discussion are all very useful with regard to tuning Apache. Chuck

Install CentOS with degraded raid

dual heads, Radeon

Dell OptiPlex 980, Radeon HD 4550 xorg figures it should use the r500 driver. I start with no /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It comes up, mirroring. I use the gnome applet - the same thing, btw, with system-config-display - tell it to use dual head, and spanning desktops. Exit X. Restart, and the second monitor goes into powersave mode. Try to exit X, either via logout, or <ctrl><alt><bkspace>, and it goes, and comes back with a bluish screen... and that's all she wrote. It's hung so hard I can't log in via ssh, and have to power cycle it. Any clues? mark

The system is pseudo dead when hang-up system in the centos 5.3 .

When I hang-up the system, then the screem is black. But the power light is brightness. and the disk light is bright sometimes. When I press any key, the screem is still black. Only can do is to press down power button for several seconds to power off the notebook. Is there the bug of the Centos?

Load at 5, no CPU I/O or swap in use

We are currently running CentOS 5 update 4 on a Dell R910 server 16 cores/32 hyperthreaded with 64GB of memory. It is our main Oracle 11g DB server for one of our customers and is attached to an MD 3000 storage array. We are having a load averaging around 5 but see no swap in use, CPUs are pretty much idle and no I/O wait. We have Oracle dataguard turned on in transactional mode. I've checked everything that I can think of, there are no Oracle processes running which would cause a spike. Anyone have any ideas as to what to check next? I have another R910 configured the same way and do not see any issues with the 3 databases running on that server. The load is at .5.

can i config/build/boot a new kernel on centos 5.5 with LVM?

(disclaimer: i'll be a bit vague about some of this since i don't have a test system to try to reproduce it until later today or this weekend.) during a RHEL SA course i was teaching this week, i was using both centos 5.5 and RHEL 6.0 beta 2 and, as a fun exercise, i was showing how to "git" checkout the kernel source tree, configure it, build, install and boot to a new kernel. sadly, at no time did that exercise actually work, so i just want to ask a general question -- should i, with a standard install of centos 5.5 with all of the required development packages, be able to checkout the kernel source, and build and boot a new kernel? upon reflection, the issues might have to do with the fact that LVM was in use and perhaps the initrd didn't have LVM support built in but, again, i can't check that until later today at the earliest. so, here's the hypothetical scenario i'm going to test later: * gateway, 64-bit laptop, with 64-bit centos 5.5, fully updated * /boot is primary ext4 partition * / and /home are logical volumes in a single volume group * "git clone" latest kernel source * "make defconfig" * "make" * "make modules_install" * "make install" is there any reason why the above shouldn't work? (and instead of "make defconfig", i can copy the /boot/config file for the stock kernel and "make oldconfig". i'll almost certainly try both just to cover all the possibilities.) so ... should this theoretically work? is there a web page that actually walks through the process? because we were having all kinds of grief just installing the kernel or booting and failing to find the root device (which is why i suspect something LVM-related.) i'm open to suggestions. thanks. rday p.s. obviuosly, i'd love to hear that someone else has already done this and it worked just fine. -- ======================================================================== Robert P. system shutdown - turning off quotas takes a long time

Hi, recently I had to instal a new raid storage system for our central fileserver. It is connected by iscsi (1Gbit) and the fielsystems mounted are 400GB and 1TB and ext3. curretly about 400 GB are used by 1.5 Mio files. I turned quota on and did a quota check. BUT on reboot the system crashes/hangs during 'turning off quotas' This message shows up about 30++ sec after the shutdown ... Any idea? Hint? Suggestion? The storage is an SUN 7110 with SAS drives. Understanding FS ACLs

I have problem understanding FS ACLs.Can someone explain me why the following behaviour occur?
