PAE Kernel

I have a box running CentOS 5.x 32 bit. I noticed these kernels are installed. [root@ns1 log]# rpm -qa |grep kern |sort kernel-2.6.18-194.11.1.el5 kernel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 kernel-2.6.18-194.8.1.el5 kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.18-194.11.1.el5 kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.18-194.8.1.el5 [root@ns1 log]# uname -a Linux ns1.xx.net 2.6.18-194.11.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue Aug 10 19:09:06 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux [root@ns1 log]# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1025500 687176 338324 0 87824 535628 -/+ buffers/cache: 63724 961776 Swap: 2031608 0 2031608 This machine only has 1G of RAM. Should I just remove the PAE kernels? Matt

ATI, Catalyst and a new kernel

Please bear with me for a really stupid question... I have a Radeon HD 4550 video card and currently run the Catalyst driver, fglrx_6_9_0-8.741-1. I use the "package managed" method for installing, allowing me keep track of what's what: [rj@madeleine ~]$ su Password: [root@madeleine rj]# grep fglrx /var/log/yum* /var/log/yum.log:May 20 12:37:07 Updated: fglrx_6_9_0-8.723-1.i386 /var/log/yum.log:Jul 25 13:04:49 Erased: fglrx_6_9_0 /var/log/yum.log:Jul 25 13:33:11 Installed: fglrx_6_9_0-8.741-1.i386 [root@madeleine rj]# exit exit [rj@madeleine ~]$ So, my question is, must/should I rebuild the driver each time I install an updated kernel or is it sufficient to "yum remove fglrx_6_9_0-8.741-1", update the kernel and (maybe) glibc, then "yum localinstall $(locate i386/fglrx_6_9_0-8.741-1.i386.rpm)" ? If anyone wonders why I don't simply stick with the generic driver, the fglrx driver makes a WORLD of difference with Googleearth. Thanks!

miro from rpmforge appears to have dep solving issues

Hi folks, Anyone know the whereabouts of libgtkembedmoz.so()(64bit) as it is needed by miro-1.0-1.el5.rf.x86_64 (rpmforge) I tried a whatprovides and have looked at epel as well as rpmforge - no luck. While I'm asking, I'm looking for an internet HD TV viewer - miro looked interesting - any other products you know of? TIA Rob

Backing up pass words

I am currently running CentOS 4 and want to install CentOS 5. To do that, I plan to install a new HD in my server box onto which CentOS will be installed. I will then copy the "home" directory from the old drive or from a backup on a USB drive, however I am not sure how to handle the Users/Passwords from the old installation. Many thanks... Screensaver timer failure

Set default file/dir permissions?

Greetings all- I have a system running CentOS 5.5 x86_64. It's serving NFS for several 'frontend' boxes in a web application setup. All data is stored in specific dir but written by different users. When the webapp attempts to read this information, it may or may not have permissions to this data. What I'd like to do is set 'default permissions' on the data storage directory (lets call this /var/appdata) so that any file or directory created under this is assigned a default set of permissions, and if possible, ownership. I've looked at and tested umask but it only seems to allow/disallow specific permissions, not force permissions. Am I missing something? How can I force all files/dirs created under a specific directory to have the permissions (and ownership if possible) that I specify? Thanks! Tim Nelson Systems/Network Support Rockbochs Inc. Is oprofile still working?

Hi all, Is anyone using oprofile? I'm getting segfaults from opreport at the moment, and I'm not sure if it is opreport, or just me. In case it is something just plain daft I am doing, here is how it goes: opcontrol --reset opcontrol --setup --no-vmlinux opcontrol --start ... now I run my program, /tmp/myprog ... opcontrol --dump opcontrol --shutdown then I run, opreport -l /tmp/myprog and get: warning: [vdso] (tgid:4780 range:0x8d7000-0x8d8000) could not be found. warning: [vdso] (tgid:4784 range:0x860000-0x861000) could not be found. CPU: Core Solo / Duo, speed 1067 MHz (estimated) Counted CPU_CLK_UNHALTED events (Unhalted clock cycles) with a unit mask of 0x00 (Unhalted core cycles) count 100000 Segmentation fault The problem seems to come when I ask for symbols (-l). I can't seem to get much information out of other running programs either. I'm running the opcontrol commands as root, and I've tried opreport as root or myself. I'm sure I have done this successfully in the past (but this is the first time I have tried it in a while). I have what should be a fully patched CentOS 5.5 here. I see this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=529028 , but it looks to be too old to be relevant (I notice I have the updated binutils that the final link in the bugreport points to). I've tried this on two different machines, but they are similar configurations I guess in that they are both 32bit intel machines. Hywel.
