yum with a proxy

Hello, While yum is configured to use a proxy, like this : [base] name=CentOS-$releasever - Base mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch… #baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/os/$basearch/ gpgcheck=1 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-6 proxy=http://proxy.lasb:3128 it still make some attempts to connect directly to Internet (tcp 80). These attempts are denied and logged by the firewall. If I comment out the line mirrorlist= and uncomment the line baseurl= then there is no more direct connexion to Internet. (N.B. : in both cases, yum works well despite the access denied.) I have tried to add a line proxy= to fastestmirror.conf, but it doesn't change anything. I can't put proxy= in /etc/yum.conf because I also have a local repo. Any idea on how to avoid these connexion to Internet ? 6.1 .iso size?

I haven't managed to get hold of any DVD-R media, and the machine I particularly want to install on seems not to be able to see double- sided (which I do have). (It's not exactly a new PC.) So I can't get 6.0 onto it in the usual way. But I can wait till 6.1 comes out; it is possible to predict yet whether it will squeeze in under the DVD+R limit? -- Beartooth Staffwright, Not Quite Clueless Power User I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is.

Intel SE7210TP1-E giving memory errors

Hi List, I've been getting the following EDAC memory errors EDAC MC0: CE page 0xeb0dd, offset 0x0, grain 4096, syndrome 0x45, row 3, channel 0, label "": i82875p CE and from this seeing that these errors have been corrected. Checking cat /sys/devices/system/edac/mc/mc0/csrow3/ch0_ce_count gives me a count of 4 thus I now know that csrow3 - ch0 is the problem My question is, how does this map to the on board labels DIMM 1A DIMM 1B DIMM 2A DIMM 2B Am I correct in assuming csrow 3 is DIMM 2B? Also I have just discovered that both the OS drives sda and sdb have huge number of errors shown on the SMART records - can this relate to the memory errors?? - I am just really surprised to have two drives show almost identical number of errors at the same time, yet no apparent data errors - Drives are ATA ST380013AS 74.53 GB TIA for your insightful comments

Design question about VG / LV in a clustered environement

Hi ! Since the last couple of months, we had a few problems with the maner we designed our clustered filesystem and we are planing to do a re-design of the filesystems and how they are used. Our cluster is composed of 8 nodes, connected via fibre channel, to a raid enclosure where we have 6 pair of 1-tb drives in mirror, so 6 1tb physical volumes. First of all, our services that are run from the cluster are running inside of directories. For exemple, a webserver for a given application is run from /CyberCat/WebServer/(...) That directory contains all executable (apache, php for exemple) and the related data, except for the databases. /CyberCat being a single GFS partition containing several other services. This filesystem and another one like this containing services for some other clients occupy a single VG composed of 2 PV (total 2tb). The remaining (4) other PV are used in one 1tb VG each, and those VG contains only one LV that is used for databases servers. For availibility reasons, we are planing of spliting the /CyberCat (and the other one like it) FS into several smaller filesystems, one for each service. The reason being that in the event that we need to make a filesystem check, or any other unplaned reason, on any filesystem it won't affect other services. So, now comes the question I have : 1. First of all, is this a bad idea ? 2. Is there any disadvantages of doing a single volume group composed of many physical volumes, enabling us to move the extents of a logical volume from one physical volume to another one, so that load is more balanced in the event we need it. Seeing rlimits on CentOS 4

This is probably something any SA should know... but I don't! On CentOS 5 I can see what a process's current soft and hard limits are; /proc/<pid>/limits However this isn't in the C4 kernel. Is there any easy way of determining what the process rlimit values are? % uname -a ; cat /etc/redhat-release Linux c4 2.6.20.7 #3 Sun May 2 16:30:15 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux CentOS release 4.8 (Final) (yes, I know this machine should be updated, but...) -- rgds Stephen

We're just using Linux software RAID for the first time - RAID1, and the other day, a drive failed. We have a clone machine to play with, so it's not that critical, but.... I partitioned a replacement drive. On the clone, I marked the RAID partitions on /dev/sda failed, and remove, and pulled the drive. After several iterations, I waited a minute or two, until all messages had stopped, and there was only /dev/sdb*, and then put the new one in... and it appears as /dev/sdc. I don't want to reboot the box, and after googling a bit, it looks as though I *might* be able to use udevadm to change that... but the manpage leaves something to be desired... like a man page. The one that appears interesting to me is udevadm --test --action=<string>... and the actual command that would run, but there is *ZERO* information as to what actions are available, other than the default of "add". Clues for the poor, folks? mark

Upstream 6.2

As much as I hate to be the bearer of news, I saw over 400 updates this morning on my upstream 6.1 box.... checking the upstream website, yeah, EL6.2 is out, at least for updates. I didn't see ISO's in my subscribed channel yet, though. I figured someone would notice soon enough. So before anyone goes into flame mode, think about the difficulties that have faced the CentOS developers in the past, and please refrain from asking the age-old question 'are we there yet?' (I have five children, between the ages of 17 and 4; that saying is just a smack old by now for me.....)
