LSI MegaRAID 320-2E PCIe RAID Controller

Hi All: Has anyone tried using an LSI MegaRAID 320-2E PCIe RAID Controller in an HP DL380G5 (of any HP G5 DL for that matter) running CentOS 5? It looks like it should work but it would be nice to know that someone has already done it before I start going to all the effort and expense of building the box. I have a spare DL380 and a couple of IBM EXP400 disk arrays that I would like to configure as a backup database server. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Lost root access

So on a virtual server the root password was no longer working (as in I couldn't ssh in anymore). Only I and one other know it and neither of us have changed it. No other account had the correct privileges to correct this so I'm wondering, if I had mounted that vdi as a secondary device on another VM, browsed the file system and delete /etc/shadow would this have wiped all users passwords meaning I could regain access again? (This is past tense because its sorted now but I'm curious if this would have worked? CentOS 4.8

Hi, I installed CentOS 4.8 (not CentOS 5) on VMware Fusion using an ISO file I downloaded. During the installation, it asked me to enter a user name and its password. I tried to enter root for the user name, but it would not let me do that. So I had to enter a non-root user name. So I did not have the root user name and password when the installation completed. I only had a non-privileged user name, and could not do any sudo work. How can I solve this problem? I noticed that CentOS 5 (not the 4.8 I needed to install) asking to enter the password for root during the installation. But I need to install CentOS 4.8, not 5. Thank you. Jerry

centos 5.5 check memoray usage too high???

We have DELL R900 server with 128GB RAM (CENTOS 5.5)in it. This server only have one application running and few people use it. Every week I ata least get one or two messages from monitor tool mail to me say: Message=Memory Utilization is 92.02%, crossed warning (80) or critical (90) threshold. Since server have 128 GB RAM and only 1 application. I really don't belive that. Does there has some way can check memory utilitation ? Thanks.

Knowing that lets me use the GUI to clearly identify a failed drive, which shows up as a PHY#. I'm normally a command-line kinda guy but this utility is something I really like on RHEL-6. I hope it's the same on CentOS-6. I'll organize the disk arrays with this trial version of RHEL, on the assumption that CentOS-6 simply picks them up as-built. Chuck

After a crash I tried wget http://debuginfo.centos.org/5/x86_64/kernel-debuginfo-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.x… as usual. But for 32.1 there is no kernel-debuginfo. Is there any reason for that? hp laptop

I have a new hp laptop, I installed centos 5.5 on x86_64. I was only seeing one core in /proc/cpuinfo. The CPU is core i5 M450 which should be dual core. So I put a more recent kernel on the machine, 2.6.34.7 did the compile and all - rebooted and I still only see one core in /proc/cpuinfo. the i5 M450 is a dual core cpu. Is there something else I am missing? Thanks, Jerry

In my case, the drives are segregated into several 3-drive bays which are bolted into the case individually, so removing each one to compare serial numbers would be a major pain, since I'd have to unbolt a bay and remove each drive one at a time to read the label. The use of the new RHEL-6/CentOS-6 'udevadm' command nicely maps out the hardware path no matter the order the drives are detected/named, and since hardware paths are fixed, I just have to attach a little tag to each SATA cable with that path number on it. One thing I did was reboot the machine *many* times to make sure the controller cards were always enumerated by Linux in the same slot order. I also notice that the RHEL-6 DriveInfo GUI application shows which drive is giving trouble, but it only maps the controllers in a vague way with respect to the hardware path. (At least that's what I remember seeing a couple of days ago, I could be mistaken.) On this particular machine I don't have the luxury of per-drive LED activity indicators, so whacking each drive with a big read won't point the way (but I have used that technique on other machines). I didn't have the funds to buy the hot-swap bays I would have preferred. I may retrofit later. Your suggestions are well taken, but the hardware I have doesn't readily allow my use of them. [OT] Best way to get dhcpd messages piped to a web service.

Starting off, it is important not to loose any dhcp messages, especially during log rotation. I am trying to use the following set (all from standard repositories): centos (5.5) + python 2.6 + sqlalchemy + mysql. Squid and SELinux

Hi. I'm trying to setup squid with SELinux, the problem i encounter is taht i want to add another directory for cache, in this system we have a home partition with huge space, i create a squid dir and add the path with semanage: semanage fcontext -a -t squid_cache_t '/home/squid(/.*)?' i check the files and are in the good context: drwxr-xr-x squid squid user_u:object_r:squid_cache_t . drwxr-xr-x squid squid system_u:object_r:home_root_t .. drwxr-x--- squid squid user_u:object_r:squid_cache_t 00 drwxr-x--- squid squid user_u:object_r:squid_cache_t 01 ... But when i want start it i get this: type=AVC msg=audit(1296442326.932:739661): avc: denied { search } for pid=30924 comm="squid" name="/" dev=sda3 ino=2 scontext=user_u:system_r:squid_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:home_root_t:s0 tclass=dir I know that the solution is to mount the huge partition on /var/spool/squid, i'm a newbie to SELinux, and want to know if it's posible to archive this. The more I look into the whole problem the more I realize that I've overstated the difficulty, now that I know how to map out the hardware path for any given /dev/sdX I might need to replace. I've never dug as deeply into this before, mostly because I never could find the spare time. I'm happy with simply writing a little script which accepts a /dev/sdX device name argument and reformats the output of: 'udevadm info --query=path --name=/dev/sdX' to extract the hardware path. It's a bit cleaner than the current RHEL-5/CentOS-5 'udevinfo' command. Using the numeric path assumes knowledge of how the motherboard sockets are laid out and the order in which I/O controller channels are discovered, of course. It's then not difficult to trace a failed drive by attaching little tags to the SATA cables from the controller cards. The real key is to carefully label each SATA cable and its associated drive. Then the little mapping script can be used to identify the faulty drive which mdadm reports by its device name. It just occurred to me that whenever mdadm sends an email report, it can also run a script which groks out the path info and puts it in the email message. Problem solved :-) So even though I figured out how to add 'alias' symlink names to each disk drive, I'm not going to bother with it. It was a very useful learning experience, though. Chuck

Setting up persistent LUNs

Hello everyone, I am trying to setup persistent LUNs and having problems. I've been following instructions I found on the web and they refer to editing /etc/scsi_id.config file and adding options=-g line there. After doing so, I should be able to run scsi_id -g -s /dev/sd* and get proper results. I've modified file /etc/scsi_id.config appropriately: [root@psrwjmsafs1 etc]# grep options /etc/scsi_id.config vendor="ATA",options=-p 0x80 options=-g but whenever I run scsi_id -g -s /b/sde1 - i get nothing. [root@psrwjmsafs1 etc]# df -k |grep sde /dev/sde1 1754602560 93383616 1572090328 6% /test How come? Am i missing something? Thank you! Asya

limiting yum url question

Hi, I need to configure yum to limit the number of URLs going out for security reason. I don't find a configuration for include option. I do find an exclude option in /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf. It would be impossible to exclude every url in this file. What is the best way to limit the traffic going out interest for yum? Is the local network repository a better way or does there exist an include option that I am not aware of? Thanks, --xinhuan
