Mounting an external USB drive

With Centos 5.5, my external USB drive appears to self mount in that the icon appears on the desktop and when I double click on it, the files are there. However, I recall that I need to make an entry in the fstab as well as some other changes. When I do a # /sbin/fdisk -l I learn that the device is /dev/sda1 and the system is HPFS/NTFS I am not sure what to enter into the file system table, fstab and if other entries/directories need to be made. Default permissions for creating a new user

I know this is a Linux 101 question, however I am unable to locate the answer in my O'Reilly Linux book: how to set the default for permissions when creating a new user. The default for the GUI in my newly installed Centos 5.5 is 700. I usually use 774. And when root creates a new directory, is there a way to have a default there too? Lastly, if root or someone with root privileges creates a sub-directory, is there a setting so that the sub-directory will have the owner/group and permissions as the parent directory? How to limit ftp users to just view their directory

I am in the process of bring up Centos 5.5. My ftp server is vsftp. When I add a user (e.g. brian), the "brian" directory is owned by "brian" and is in the "brian" group with 700 permissions. However, using a FTP client, the user "brian" can view all of the directories. I do not see any directive in vsftpd.conf to limit this. What have I missed? Can't build PHP 5.3.6 with MySQL 5.5.10 on CentOS-4

Also, there is no problem building with MySQL 5.5.8 and previous versions. The problem **only occurs with MySQL 5.5.9 or MySQL 5.5.10** and any PHP version on C4. Remote-logging nginx? (or other non-syslog-enabled stuff)

I'm looking for suggestions as to a good general method of remote-logging services such as nginx or anything else which doesn't support syslog natively. I'm aware that there's an nginx patch, and we're evaluating this. It may be the way we fly. However there are other tools which may not have a patch for which remote logging would be useful. If there's a general soution (something as naive as tailing local logs and firing these off on a regular basis). I've heard rumors of a Perl script used for apache logs. Also that rsyslog supports logging from local files to a remote syslog server, possibly. I'm RTFMing on that. Apache/Active Directory authentication

Hi everyone, I'm trying to figure out the best way to accomplish below project and would appreciate your input. I need to setup a web page on CentOS with Active Directory authentication. So far I've accomplished the following: - Setup httpd.conf to successfully authenticate against AD by passing my username/passwd. <Directory /var/www/html/secure> Allow from All AuthType Basic AuthName "Ldap test area" AuthBasicProvider ldap AuthzLDAPAuthoritative on AuthLDAPURL "ldap://server:389/OU=OU=name,OU=area,DC=core,DC=test,DC=edu?sAMAccountName?sub?(objectClass=*)" AuthLDAPBindDN "username@core" AuthLDAPBindPassword password require valid-user </Directory> - In addition, I used LikeWise software and was able to successfully join AD. I was wondering if there is a way to do http authentication without passing my username/password considering server is already binded to AD, thus authenticated. Slow graphics with ATI FirePro 2260

Hello- I installed CentOS 5.5 on a DELL Machine with ATI Firepro 2260 graphics card. I'm using GNOME for the graphical environment but the display is refreshing very slowly, e.g. scrolling a webpage or moving a window around. Any idea how to solve this issue. Regards, Wael

Centos 5.5 and Canon PIXMA 7600 multifunction printer/scanner/fax

Hello listmates, xsane on Ubuntu 10 finds that Canon PIXMA via the web and seems to be able to make use of it without a glitch. However, Centos machines sitting on the same net fail to find it. Does anybody know why? Thanks. Boris.

Migrating standalone systems to xen guests

Is there any (easy?) way to migrate running standalone CentOS 4 or 5 systems to xen virtual stacks? Rebuilding those systems from scratch on the xen machine would take plenty of work. - Jussi Hirvi
