virtdown script

hello list! I have a small shell script that I wrote that is meant to quickly bring down all of my xen instances in a quick and easy manner. Odd thing is, it does work on the command line. But if I put it into a script this happens: [root@LCENT03:/home/bluethundr/bin] #virtdown > it expects another command to happen. which is odd since all of the text delimiters (" and ') are balanced according to vim. I was wondering if I could have an opinion on why this might be happening. Here's the script: #/bin/bash for i in $(virsh list | grep -v -e Id -e --- -e Domain-0 | awk '{print $1}'); do /usr/bin/virsh shutdown $i done thanks in advance! tim

Identifying physical disks

I am sure this is really simple. I have a setup of 2 disks (sda, sdb) which are outwardly identical, and are mirrors of each other. Together they form 3 raid1 devices. Both disks can boot. Now sda has bad sectors, and I should replace it. But which one of the physical disks is sda?? The machine boots fine from either one of the disks, (and the booting disk of course is always called sda). In the messages log I see entries like this: Apr 29 02:21:07 a134-224 kernel: ata2: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300) By noticing which SATA link (ata1, ata2) is up and which is down, I can find out which physical disk is connected to ata1 and which to ata2. If both disks are connected, will the hd in ata1 become sda, and the hd in ata2 become sdb?? - Jussi

list of supported hardware

Hello CentOS list, I have been looking for a list of hardware that is supported by the Centos kernel and its modules. I couldn't find anything in the documentation at Centos nor at RH. Google didn't bring up anything either. Is there any list or will I need to browse the source code directories? Just for clarification, I am not looking for "certified" hardware. Multiple IP Addresses for a bridge

Is it possible to assign multiple IP addresses to a bridge the same way ethernet devices can? The purpose is to accept incoming traffic for multiple public IP. 1 Physical NIC -> br0 (accepts incoming traffic for x.x.x.2 to x.x.x.5) Then 3 different virtual interfaces are connected to this bridge 1. eth0 (x.x.x.2) 2. eth1 (x.x.x.3) 3. eth2 (x.x.x.4)

running kvm and vnc same time

Hi all, I am trying to run kvm (which works) on my desktop. then when I vnc into my desktop I can use everything as normal except the kvm window. It messes up. Its like the mouse isnt really when its supposed to be or something. Anyone ran into this? I am using 5.6 x86_64. Thanks, Jerry

Hi All, I'm lately suffering from Quota abuse at home. believe it or not my teenagers are eating through my allowed quota. Hence, i'm thinking of setting up a centos machine to work as such: HDSL modem(natted to an onboard dhcp service for lan users) -> Centos - > Switch - LAN users Hw specs: 3 GB ram 3.0 core 2 duo 2 X 1 TB HDD 2 X 1 Gb NIC Centos will contain the following: 1. DHCP # is there a way i could use the modem's dhcp service instead? or using a centos based dhcp service is better? 2. Samba # sharing files for lan users 3. Squid 4. clamav 5. OpenRadius # wifi authentication 6. knockd service (anyone tried it? i read about this service a few weeks ago and am wondering if it's worth giving it a shot... for public access to the server ) 6. Things which are needed : a. Ability to separate Wireless router from LAN. (thinking of vlans though as i have a dumb switch am thinking of adding a 3d NIC to my desktop and dedicating it to the wifi ? ) b. Accountablity of quota and bandwidth used (i was thinking of SARG and SQstat for squid) c. using some sort of shell script that will parse squid logs (mysar will help me access squid logs through mysql) and if someone bypassed their allowed quota for the day they will be moved to a delay pool with lower bandwidth. As you noticed above, my whole "connection management" is relying on squid, i'm worried that it will process only traffic that's forwarded to port "80" instead of everything going through the server. any idea if thats the case? I previously thought of untangled, and IPCOp, though i don't want a standalone router as i'd like to be able to use VirtualBox over it occasionally. waiting for your advice about the above setup, keep in mind that i don't mind changing the setup if there's something better to use, actually i do prefer it. Rebuilding RHEL from source?

Hello, Does anyone have instructions on how to go through the entire process from downloading source RPM's from RedHat's servers through to building the entire distribution? I've searched through the web and CentOS' own web sites and couldn't find such instructions. Is it just a matter of downloading them from ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Server/en/os/SRPMS/ and building the packages? This is for personal/internal use so there shouldn't be an issue with trademarks+redistribution as far as I'm aware. Thanks, --Amos

Switching to php53

I have a Centos 5.6 server which is using the default php packages. These currently contain PHP 5.1.6. My main use of PHP on the server is to support an installation of WordPress. I currently had WP 3.1.2 installed, but the WP developers have announced that from WP 3.2 they will only support PHP 5. and greater. So I investigated and found that the Centos repo contains a series of php53 packages. I tried to install php53 using yum but got the following error: Resolving Dependencies --> Running transaction check ---> Package php53.x86_64 0:5.3.3-1.el5_6.1 set to be updated --> Processing Dependency: php53-cli = 5.3.3-1.el5_6.1 for package: php53 --> Processing Dependency: php53-common = 5.3.3-1.el5_6.1 for package: php53 --> Running transaction check ---> Package php53-cli.x86_64 0:5.3.3-1.el5_6.1 set to be updated ---> Package php53-common.x86_64 0:5.3.3-1.el5_6.1 set to be updated --> Processing Conflict: php53-common conflicts php-common --> Finished Dependency Resolution php53-common-5.3.3-1.el5_6.1.x86_64 from updates has depsolving problems --> php53-common conflicts with php-common Error: php53-common conflicts with php-common You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem You could try running: package-cleanup --problems package-cleanup --dupes rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest I would have thought that the new php53-common package would have obsoleted php-common rather than conflicting with it. Is there a clean way to replace php with php53?
