I had to complete a new VM Host machine before CentOS-6 was ready, so I used SL-6 as the underpinnings. It simply worked, once I ironed out a couple of unrelated hardware issues. It auto-updates and lets me know when that's been done, but it doesn't reboot unless I want to, so there's little risk in allowing the updates. Auto-update can be disabled if you prefer. So far it has been flawless. It's managing two very large software RAID-6 arrays and 7 Guest VMs on a dual-Xeon Supermicro motherboard. All of the VM Guest OS's are CentOS-5.6 which works well for my applications. I may or may not upgrade the Guests to C6, depending on need. CentOS has been so reliable that I'm reluctant to move to a different platform. I've used Ubuntu Server and it works well, but I'm more familiar with the RHEL way of doing things so I'll stick with CentOS. One thing I don't know much about is an in-place upgrade of C5 to C6. There are some under-the-hood differences that must be taken into account, which I haven't looked into. YMMV, Chuck

OT: Video Surveillance SW on CentOS

I suggested to our Homeowners Association that we begin a Private Forum (phpBB) and web site. That suggestion has been well received and we will proceed with that. Now, I have become involved in a much more complex and important project, which is Video Surveillance, for the entrance to our subdivision. I Googled and found two (2) things for Linux that seem to be OK: (a) ZoneMinder http://www.zoneminder.com/ (b) Motion http://www.lavrsen.dk/foswiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome Both are licensed under the GPL. Motion is available from the RPMForge Repository, which is a big "plus", for installation, upgrades and removal. ZoneMinder seems to be a much more active project. I would appreciate Feedback, from anyone who has used either or both of these programs. Pros and Cons? Also, if anyone has other Software to recommend, to run on CentOS, that information will be appreciated. The idea is to have at least two (2) cameras. Centos 5.6 kernel errors

Hi guys, Is anyone else having kernel issues with CentOS 5.6? I cant get it stable on as a LAMP platform. Everything is up-to-date and yet I'm running into major problems. How do I make sense of these kernel errors? Any help will be greatly appreciated, as I'm now had to roll back to an old copy of CentOS to keep my systems stable. KVM vs ESXi

Morning Everyone, I'm busy doing a rebuild of my home server and am tossing between VMware and KVM for this build. I already have experience with ESX, we use it at work, but I'm debating trying out KVM for a while. The server itself is a budget build using a Supermicro X8SAX board w/ i7-950 & 12GB RAM, LSI 3081 SAS RAID (1068e based), rolled into a NorcoTek 16 Bay SAS case. Not fancy but also decent enough for home use. I don't expect high performance out of this unit so unless the gear is hopelessly outclassed, I'm not in a position to entertain upgrading. Right now forking over $1000-$1500 on a $2000 system for a pair of higher end LSI/3ware/Acreca controller just isn't in the budget. ;-) My question to everyone are these: -How well does KVM support Windows Guests? I'm already running a Server 2008r2 and WHS 2011 (based on 08r2) machines at home which I want to consolidate into this box. -Does KVM have a concept of virtual switches and and are they tied to physical NICs? ESXi allows me to create a vSwitch that isn't tied to a physical NIC so I can create a DMZ that exists solely within the host system. I'd like to replicate that if possible. I know these are probably questions that I could answer on my own by RTFM but I have already, and never really got the answers I needed. Pretty much every how-to assumed I'd be doing basic stuff and not dabbling with advanced stuff. I also know that what's written doesn't always match what's in the field and you folks are the field. And with CentOS 6 just around the corner (no flame wars please, my nomex pants are at the cleaners :-P ) I'm wanting to know if it's worth holding off another month or so on finalizing my build. Feed a list of filenames to vim

There are some googlable ways to feed a list of filenames to vim, but I stumble on weird results. With my filelist, I try to do cat list | xargs vim ...to edit the files listed in the file "list". Here's what happens: [root@lasso2 tempdir]# ls -l total 8 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 17 18:28 a -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 17 18:28 b -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3 May 17 18:31 c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12 May 17 18:43 list [root@lasso2 tempdir]# cat list ./a ./b ./c [root@lasso2 tempdir]# cat list | xargs vim 3 files to edit Vim: Warning: Input is not from a terminal Ok, so far, so good. And after this, the file a opens, as expected. However, the contents show as all uppercase. And everything I write is uppercase too. I can move to the next file (:n) even though the command shows as uppercase (:N). I cannot quit vim, however. When I do ":q", I get blank screen, and I have to close the terminal window. If I do instead cat list | xargs less ...it works as expected. And with cat list | xargs vi ...(in a fresh terminal window), the editing goes just perfect, but when I quit vi, the terminal will not show the commands I write, and the display gets garbled (no newlines etc.).
