CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?

USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev: Jun 27 19:53:37 torch kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sde at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch scsi.agent[13576]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host11/target11:0:0/11:0:0:0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! Jun 27 19:53:47 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! However, that's followed by this: Jun 27 19:54:07 torch hald[5179]: Timed out waiting for hotplug event 699. Rebasing to 699 I restarted hald (service haldaemon restart) and it picked up one of the two devices I'd plugged in, but not the other.

Scientific Linux 6.0 released (based on RHEL 6.0)

I know this is the CentOS list. However, as there has been some interest in CentOS 6.0 (RHEL 6), I thought I'd share the news here. Scientific Linux 6 is based on RHEL 6 with add-ons for scientific computing. FWIW, the Admin tools etc. are pretty much the same as in RHEL, so are the base packages. Intel 82599 driver?

Which version of the ixgbe driver is included in 5.6? I went through all the RHEL5 release notes, but they only ever state that the driver was updated, not which devices was added. ext4 in CentOS 5.6?

I'm sure many are running ext4 FS's in production, but just want to be re-assured that there are not currently any major issues before starting a new project that looks like it will be using ext4. I've previously been using xfs but the software for this project requires ext3/ext4. I'm always very cautious before jumping onto a new FS, (new in the sense it is officially supported now) Thanks in advance!

Quota (and disk usage) is incorrectly reported on nfs client mounting XFS filesystem

hi all, I hope you can help me with a strange quota/nfs/XFS behavior... I'm using Centos 5.6 on both a nfs server and client. Both are 64-bit, and using a recent kernel: NFS server: Linux fs2.priv 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 31 13:22:04 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux NFS client: Linux nx8.priv 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue May 31 13:22:04 EDT 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux The NFS server is exporting a XFS filesystem: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/vgXX-lvXX 24T 16T 8.2T 66% /export User foo (for anonymity) added ~3TB of data in the last 2-3 days. On the NFS server, her quota is reported as ~5.8 TB: Disk quotas for user foo (uid 1314): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace /dev/mapper/vgXXX-lvXXX 6129681348 7490000000 0 6991914 0 0 On a NFS client, her quota is reported as ~1.8TB: Disk quotas for user foo (uid 1314): Filesystem blocks quota limit grace files quota limit grace fs2:/XXXXX 1831504512 3195032704 0 6988049 0 0 When I modify her quota on the NFS sever, it's not reflected on the NFS client. This problem is specific user foo. There are about 20 other users with quotas on this NFS server, and if I change one of their quotas, the quota/usage is correctly (and instantly) reflected on the NFS client. rpc.quotad is configured to use port 875, and I can see this is working with strace. And tcpdump shows an established connection: 16:50:04.480757 IP nx8.priv.pssc > fs2.priv.875: UDP, length 116 16:50:04.481015 IP fs2.priv.875 > nx8.priv.pssc: UDP, length 68 Any ideas? Thanks! mounting a CentOS 5.5-based NFS partitions from a Mac OS X machine

Hello listmates, Yes, I know - Macs and NFS do not co-exist easily. Still I've got to make this happen somehow. In short - we have two CentOS-based NFS servers. They work fine with a variety of Linux machines but when I try to mount them from a Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.6 machine I get nowhere. I.e., the Mac does not complain yet reads nothing over the NFS. Has anybody seen this? Does anybody know of a fix? Thanks. Boris.

Mirror URL Times Out

Dear All, I am using Centos 4.7, i have an issue when i run yum update, the URL times-out even when i browse it on firefox #yum update php Setting up Update Process Setting up repositories http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/updates/i386/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 12] Timeout: <urlopen error timed out> Trying other mirror. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: update failure: repodata/repomd.xml from update: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Centos|Windows Cross Platform File Managers

Greetings all! Can anyone recommend a Midnight Commander like file manager that will run on Windows Vista please? I have downloaded and installed 2 MC's for Vista, but the actual MC user window running under Vista is very small compared to my screens real estate, and I cannot seem to make it fill half the screen. I have found Double Commander for Windows: http://doublecmd.sourceforge.net/ and installed that, and wondered if there is a version of Double Commander available for Centos please? Any decent File Manager that will run on Centos and Windows would be fine. That way I can easily switch between the two OSes as needed, and be comfortable using just one cross-platform file manager. Anyway to ensure SSH availability?

I was having problems with the same server locking up to the point I can't even get in via SSH. I've already used HTB/TC to reserve bandwidth for my SSH port but the problem now isn't an attack on the bandwidth. So I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to ensure that SSH is given cpu and i/o priority. However, so far reading seems to imply that it's probably not going to help if the issue is i/o related and/or it would require escalating SSH to such levels (above paging/filesystem processes) that makes it a really bad idea. Since I'm not the only person who face problems trying to remotely access a locked up server, surely somebody must had come up with a solution that didn't involve somebody/something hitting the power button?
