what is difference between "slow initialize" and "patrol read" on RAID?

We have DELL server with MD1000 Disk array in it. O.S. is CENTOS 5.5. Recently every time MD1000 "patrol read" start I will get "media error" messages on /var/log/message file. I use MD1000 "slow initialize" to initialize "bad disk" and NO error. After "slow initialize" finish, I manually "startup patrol read". I continue get "media error" on /var/log/message. Anyone know what difference between "slow initialize" and "patrol read"? Thanks.

daemon user can't acess file while nobody user can.

I have a server where /home is on a nfs. I installed an apache (my compile) server. By default, it runs as daemon. That user can't acces files in /home/*/public_html, while the nobody user can. So if I change my apache config, it now can. /home is : drwxr-xr-x /home/user is : drwxr-xr-x /home/user/public_html is : drwxr-xr-x selinux is disabled. In the error log of apache I get : (13)Permission denied: access to /~user/file.jpg denied I changed the shell for the daemon user so I can diagnose a little bit more, and I cannot get into the user directory. When on a local drive, it's ok. So why is that the daemon user cannot go into the user directory via nfs ?

Changing from RHEL to CentOS

I have a RHEL system and I'm thinking of changing to CentOW. How can this be done most easily. I was just saying that I'm not asking here merely because I'm too lazy to look on my own... I've got this logitech v220 notebook mouse, and the scroll wheel can be clicked left or right as well as rotated or clicked by pressing down. "normal" usage (i.e., left click, right click, middle click, and rotation of scroll wheel) works fine. Using xev I don't see anything reported for the side-click of the scroll wheel, so it may be that without some action by a driver, that the side-clicks aren't enabled. I suspect that Logitech's windoze driver tweaks the mouse in some way that "turns on" the additional actions of pressing the wheel to the left or right. The package lists LInux (2.6 kernel) as a supported OS, but of course they provide only windows/mac drivers for it, and the web site explicitly lists Linux as not supported. Talk about mixed messages. It's not a big deal, was just wondering if there was a way to recognize those clicks, in case there was something useful to be done with them. I've tried tweaking xorg.conf to increase number of buttons and changing z-axis from "4 5" to "6 7" but that stops the scroll wheel from working at all, so I put it back. Installing rather than changing

After reading the replies to my message about changing from RHEL to CentOS I think it might be easier to install the latest version of CentOS from scratch. I can save my home directory and my e-mail setup. My access to the present system is by ssh. How can I download everything with ssh then start the install? Since I am blind, I may need sighted help during the actual install process. Is it possible to specify answers to the questions wich the install will ask beforehand? Pardon the dumb questions. I want to get the process completed with as little interference to my software development work as possible. Thanks, -- John J. hard disk install failure

Has anybody successfully installed CentOS- I tried (several times) installing CentOS-5.6 from a hard disk, and each time it failed after installing all the rpms, with the warning "The installation has tried to mount image #2, but cannot find it on the hard drive." When I pressed the Debug button one time after the failure, it seemed to say that it was looking for the file in /dev/sdb7//ext2/ (/dev/sdb7 being the site of the DVD ISO). But I'm not sure what "image #2" is? Or where it should be put? Incidentally, I started by copying isolinux/vmlinuz and isolinux/initrd.img to the the directory CentOS-5.6 in the /boot parition of a working linux (Fedora) system, and adding the stanza ---------------------------- title CentOS-5.6 root (hd0,1) kernel /CentOS-5.6/vmlinuz repo=hd:/dev/sdb5:/ initrd /CentOS-5.6/initrd.img ---------------------------- The repo option was ignored, and I was asked if I wanted to install by FTP, from Hard Disk, etc. In the end I installed by http from my web-server, after mount -o loop CentOS-5.6-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso /var/www/html/ on the server . text-mode system and /media

I'm running a headless server, so no GUI, just ssh logins. I don't seem to have the mechanism that automounts USB drives to a subdirectory of /media, and from googling around I think that's a feature of a GUI-based system. What implements it? Right now I manually create a mountpoint in /mnt and then manually mount by label from /dev/disk/by-label after plugging the drive in. It would be convenient if the drive automounted when plugged in.
