Exporting /dev/shm as NFS share?

I'm trying to do some network transfer test using NFS. The problem is when I try to eliminate the possibility of the hard disks being the bottleneck. I am unable to export /dev/shm as a NFS share. Initially there was an error about fsid or wrong filesystem. If I use a symbolic such as /home/test -> /dev/shm, on the remote system, this causes the NFS client to see its own /dev/shm If I mount /home/test as a tmpfs on the host and export it, the client also appear to use its own tmpfs rather than the host. Is there anyway to work around this or some other way to test the network speed without being bottlenecked by the sending side?

/dev/sd and /dev/mapper

I've done a little research, and can't really find out why it happens, but on one server I have built, I get the old fashion /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2 type partitions and on another server I get the /dev/mapper style partitions. Both machines are hardware raided (before the install) and both machines are Centos 5.5 64 bit, using the same set of CDs to install from. Can someone please explain why this happens? I'm not sure it matters, so this is just a curious bother. The machines are different brands with different raid controllers. Both were partitoned using the "custom layout" when installed. I'm thinking I must have overlooked a checkbox or something during the install. This is not a big deal, not a problem, it's just an itch in my brain. Thanks for any explanation. steve campbell

No DVD Mirrors - Only Torrent

I love Centos. Have in on my data centre servers, my home servers, my laptop and my netbook. Yes there are serious and continuing security concerns relating to Gnome and KDE but they are not Centos. Currently running 5.6 and would like a two set DVD of that version. However none of the mirrors offer pure DVDs only Torrent versions which involve the possibility of bits being tampered with and things leaving my servers without explicit knowledge and authority. None of the CD / DVD sellers I have contacted can offer Centos 5.6 DVDs because, they say, they can't get a virgin 5.6 DVD only Torrent. FreeBSD 8.2 (the latest) offers a virgin 1 DVD download. The whole distribution is about 4 DVDs. Can Centos offer a virgin 1 DVD download of 5.6 for those of us who are unhappy about slow Torrent, the possibility of tampering and the traffic out of our machines ? BY THE WAY, a very BIG and GRATEFUL THANK YOU to the EXCELLENT TEAM that gave us the wonderful Centos 5.6. Very much appreciated and if KBS and the others ever venture out of Kent and London a bit northwards but south of Watford I would be delighted to buy him and the others several rounds of drinks. Chicken and egg question: passwd and cronjob

Hi all, Let's say I activate password expiration for every account (including root) for every 90 days. I understand that cronjob for root will fail when the password expires. The question is, if I setup a cronjob every 90 days to renew the root password like: echo diFficulT123 | passwd --stdin root will it work? I mean at second 1 on the 90th day, which will run first? - The cronjob to renew the password - Or the password expiration, thus preventing the cronjob from running. Pardon me if it's silly. I know it's bad to change password from script, but the root acc is not used at all and has been disabled from logon remotely. I just need it to keep various cronjob to keep running. Any other advise are welcome.

how to find out what is causing high mysql cpu load

Hi all, I have a CentOS 5.6 xen domU that is used for hosting several Apache virtual hosts that use MySQL. Lately, this domU has been having performance issues and I've noticed web pages loaded from this server opening slower than usual. When I run 'top' I see mysqld constantly consuming 10-60% of CPU. sar reports average of 10-20 for %user, 5 for %system, 0.2 for %iowait and 10-20 for %steal When looking at 'xm top' in dom0 (running also CentOS 5.6) most of the other domUs have CPU(%) near zero and only this domU is reported to consume CPU more than 10%. The strange thing is, that when I run 'mytop', I do not see that many queries: I see avg of 4 users "sleeping" and occasionally some other user running a query. qps is mostly 0. No slow queries. Key efficiency is 97%. Here is my /etc/my.cnf: max_connections = 300 max_user_connections = 300 wait_timeout = 180 Nothing interesting in /var/log/mysqld.log. I tried rebooting both the dom0 and the domU which made no difference. Questions: 1. How to debug further why mysqld is taking so much cpu? 2. If I've understood correctly, the high steal% value reported by sar means that the hypervisor is giving cpu time for some other domU. How to find out why and where this cpu time is stolen to? OT: DHCP address pool for specific MAC manufacturer

Dear CentOS, This is somewhat off-topic, but I do hope to implement this on a CentOS system, so here goes... I would like to be able to setup a dhcpd (or like) daemon to maintain two IP address pools. One for devices whose leading three octets of the client MAC address are specified and the other for all other clients. Both pools would be a defined range on a commmon /24 subnet. There a several static IP devices also on this net (servers, printer, etc...). At no time would there be more than a dozen of the specified MAC range devices active. I considered splitting the /24 block into two /25 blocks and creating a shared-network with two subnets, but that still leaves no way to wild-card the lower 3 octets, which I cannot know in advance. In addition to DHCP, I've looked at DNSmasq and a few others but no joy. I don't see a solution that doesn't require a significant development effort. I'm off to think about possible doing this in perl. I still hope someone has already done this. Thanks, Ray

CUPS not rendering documents via Samba

Hi guys, any CUPS / Samba experts out there? The CUPS printing guide is a horrendous maze of options. I've got nearly there but I've got one thing wrong and I don't know where to look. I set up our two printers (HP K5400s) using the GUI printer tool. Both print the test page just fine. I set up the [printers] and [print$] shares and can browse to the printers from Windows (XP for me) I managed to get the postscript drivers installed with cupsaddsmb and it installs on the XP client just fine. ..... sadly it just prints the postscript instead of rendering it. I guess the printer queue is in raw mode but I can't see where to change it. I vaguely remember foomatic and such from ages back. Year in log files

Hi, Can we display year in log files timestamp? We are being audited and the auditor wants to know when we apply certain patches. yum.log shows it, but it doesn't have the year. I can argue based on common sense, but it would be much nicer if the year is there.
