SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?

USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev: Jun 27 19:53:37 torch kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sde at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch scsi.agent[13576]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host11/target11:0:0/11:0:0:0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! Rebasing to 699 I restarted hald (service haldaemon restart) and it picked up one of the two devices I'd plugged in, but not the other.

Where are the CentOS 6 security updates?

The release announcement for CentOS-6.0 posted on CentOS-announce on Sun Jul 10 mentioned that: > Since upstream has a 6.1 version already released, we will be using a > Continous Release repository for 6.0 to bring all 6.1 and post 6.1 > security updates to all 6.0 users, till such time as CentOS-6.1 is > released itself. There will be more details about this posted within the > next 48 hours. I have not noticed anything said about this since, and I can't find any security updates. Firefox, for instance, is at 3.6.9. This is about a year old with many known security problems, so it really shouldn't be used. CentOS 5 and RHEL 6 have 3.6.18. Are there still no security updates available for CentOS 6, or have I just managed to completely miss how to access them?

to date, I've done all my administration on a manual 1 at a time basis, as each system has been pretty much unique. its looking like I might need to setup a deployment of a dozen or 2 basically identical machines, all running pretty much the same sorts of stuff. I have zero experience with the sorts of management tools folks use to automate this type of configuration, both initial setup, and ongoing management (system updates, user application updates, configuration changes, etc). anyone care to suggest any such tools, maybe some real-world pros and cons? of course, being centos, I prefer FOSS tools. for various reasons, this environment likely will NOT be virtualized (although I may emulate a test setup with vmware). -- john r pierce N 37, W 122 santa cruz ca mid-left coast

Scientific Linux 6.0 released (based on RHEL 6.0)

I know this is the CentOS list. However, as there has been some interest in CentOS 6.0 (RHEL 6), I thought I'd share the news here. Scientific Linux 6 is based on RHEL 6 with add-ons for scientific computing. FWIW, the Admin tools etc. are pretty much the same as in RHEL, so are the base packages. Intel 82599 driver?

Which version of the ixgbe driver is included in 5.6? I went through all the RHEL5 release notes, but they only ever state that the driver was updated, not which devices was added. ext4, 4k sector alignment

I've mentioned this problem before but put off doing anything about it and maybe now someone can suggest the best solution. I have a 3-member RAID1 set where one of the members is periodically swapped and rotated offsite. The filesystem contains a backuppc archive which has millions of hardlinks that make it impractical to copy with a file-oriented approach. The current filesystem is ext3 with one partition that uses the entire disk capacity (no lvm). It works as is, but... I'd like to use a laptop size drive for the swapped member and the only ones available that match the size have 4k sectors. I have swappable, trayless SATA bays available for both drive sizes. The problem is that with the current partition layout, the drive with 4k sectors takes more than a day to re-sync even though on read access the speed is a match for the full sized drives that sync in a few hours. My questions for any filesystem experts are: Is there a way to adjust the existing md partitions to get the right alignment for 4k sectors without having to do a file-oriented copy to new partitions? A resize + a dd copy to shift the position might be feasible time-wise if that would work. Is it worth converting to ext4? Is there a difference between doing this on 5.6 or 6.x? If I start over from scratch with 6.x, will the partitioning tools automatically align for 4k sector drives (with/without lvm?)? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

how to assign program to run on dedicate CPU ?

We have CENTOS 5.X on DELL servers. I know on Windows environment I can use "imagecfg.exe" to assign program run on dedicate CPU. Can anyone tell me how to do this on LINUX? Thanks.

CentOS 6 system-config-bind missing?

First system-config-network is not part of CentOS/RHEL 6, now I don't see system-config-bind either. Is there an alternative (GUI) way to manage the bind DNS server? Emmett
