2 questions on CentOS firewall

I'm running CentOS-6 on an HP MicroServer with a Billion 5200S modem/router connecting to the internet. I'm running the standard CentOS-6 firewall on the server. (1) I can open port 22 on the Billion, allowing me to ssh in from outside. But for some reason I cannot ping the same address from outside. (I can ping it internally.) Why is this? I'm not sure if the problem lies with the router or the server? There does not seem to be any explicit rule on either to allow ICMP packets through. (2) I have a Linksys WRT54GL WiFi router attached to the server, to allow access to the internet from laptops. This works fine. But I was surprised to find that when I turn OFF the firewall on the server this stops access to the internet on laptops. (I didn't test to see if re-booting the laptop would solve this.) Changing the size of the swap memory

When I first installed my CentOS system the machine had only 1 GB. the swap memory was set to 2 GB Now the machine has 4 GB but swap is still 2 GB. With that much memory maybe it doesn't matter, but it sure looks odd. Is there any way to change it? Thanks, John -- John J. tripwire alternative

Hello all, Years ago, I used to work with tripwire for system monitoring. Last time I checked with "yum search tripwire", there is no hit. IIRC, it used to be packed by default on older Redhat distros. Any suggestion for an alternative of tripwire for my CentOS 5.6? How can we tweak the CentOS6 Kickstart installation to explicitly request an NFSv3 service in the PXE config file: kernel CentOS-6-i386/vmlinuz append load_ramdisk=1 initrd=CentOS-6-i386/initrd.img network ks=nfs:130.226.86.4:/u/rpm/kickstart/ks-centos-6-clean-i386.cfg To rephrase my question: Where do we find documentation for the vmlinuz append flags shown above, in particular documentation of the ks=... flags? Hopefully there'll be some way to force an NFSv3 mount in stead of the default NFSv4? Or perhaps we need to use http: and stop using nfs: with CentOS6? Thanks, Ole

Thanks for the replies. I checked free and that makes sense to me now. The only thing I cannot figure out is, if there is all this memory available why would swap space start building? I started checking all this out because the system slowed to a crawl after I noticed swap space being used which does not make sense to me if there is available memory. total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 8301448 7917100 384348 0 59984 6009248 -/+ buffers/cache: 1847868 6453580 Swap: 4128760 1225896 2902864 btw - this is Centos 5.6 box using the PAE kernel. 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5PAE

Memory Usage in Top and System Monitor

Can someone help clear up some confusion in reading memory usage in Top and System monitor. Here is a picture of both. http://s1176.photobucket.com/albums/x327/ionosphere2011/ Why does "System Monitor" show 1.7gb free out of 8gb. While Top shows all 8gb being used? If 1.7gb is free then it should not be using swap space so I assume "System Monitor" is reporting it incorrectly? Thanks -- Mike

Script to sync with repo

under 5.6 I have a script that runs every night to rsync the repodata for local installations. I added the 6.0 to do the same. Something seems wrong now for 6.0. I do the same thing and I get errors from my local repo at install time. Seems like the cyrus-sasl package is never happy and aborts the installation. Is something wrong with the script below? It seems like it successfully copies the files. I ran it manually and did not see any errors. Any thoughts? firewall?

Dear All I need to put my centos 5.6 server as firewall server in fron of a windows-running node before connecting it to the net. Can you please let me know what stuff do I need to put on my centos server? Thank you
