managing a rack full of centos servers

to date, I've done all my administration on a manual 1 at a time basis, as each system has been pretty much unique. its looking like I might need to setup a deployment of a dozen or 2 basically identical machines, all running pretty much the same sorts of stuff. I have zero experience with the sorts of management tools folks use to automate this type of configuration, both initial setup, and ongoing management (system updates, user application updates, configuration changes, etc). anyone care to suggest any such tools, maybe some real-world pros and cons? of course, being centos, I prefer FOSS tools. for various reasons, this environment likely will NOT be virtualized (although I may emulate a test setup with vmware). -- john r pierce N 37, W 122 santa cruz ca mid-left coast

we need to filter out various peoples posts on this list would some kind soul(s) please direct us in locating the best email list reading programs w/ the best features to read the centos and other lists. the CentOS list signal/noise ratio is so bad that we need something better than just outlook like clients or whatever appropriate windows and linux recommendations would be most appreciated thank you in advance - rh

Centos 5.6 : No YUM Updates ?

Always Used to seeing regular GUI notices of updates, I also noticed the absence of any. Applications System Tools Software Updater produces none. Neither does yum update yet there was on this List a recent warning about about an Apache vulnerability. -- With best regards, Paul. England, EU.

Update to CentOS 6.0 without CD/DVD reader

I've had a disaster on my home network server; the partition table on the disk containing / has become corrupted, and testdisk has not enabled me to recover the table. If anyone can help with this I should be grateful. However, that is not what I am writing about. I've installed a substitute box - and HP MicroServer - which by a miracle has CentOS-5.6 installed on it. Now I'm wondering what is the best way to install CentOS-6, given that there is no CD/DVD driver on this machine. I have access to the internet, so I can download the CD/DVD . I know I could install through a USB stick; I'm just wondering if there is a more direct route. Here's a thought I just thunk, folks: some scum, apparently in eastern Europe, has harvested my email, and is using it in the Reply-To: in its spamming efforts. Now, I realize that some mails go out from noreply, but other than that, is there a good reason why a mailserver would not be configured to send delivery failure to *both* Reply-To and From? mark

(c 5.6) Running 2 versions of Apache ?

Just wondering how to run 2 versions of Apache on the same server, listening on different IPs and both on port 80. Does one give them, the httpd, different names and effectively duplicate most of the Apache set-up ? I use Apache;s virtual hosts facility for normal purposes but this is for a different project. Scientific Linux 6.0 released (based on RHEL 6.0)

I know this is the CentOS list. However, as there has been some interest in CentOS 6.0 (RHEL 6), I thought I'd share the news here. Scientific Linux 6 is based on RHEL 6 with add-ons for scientific computing. FWIW, the Admin tools etc. are pretty much the same as in RHEL, so are the base packages. CentOS 6, KDE 4: bad DNS traffic

On my new CentOS 6, KDE 4, running WireShark I see what appears to be frequent nonsensical DNS queries, for example: "settings-personal.desktop" and "settings-system.desktop". The DNS response is always:"No such name". Do tell! These appear especially when I click on things on the KDE menus. On my old CentOS 5 box, on the same LAN, I see no such thing. I note that I have replaced the original /etc/hosts with my own. Might these have been resolved in the original? Thanks for your comments. Mike.
