disk duplication question

I have need to duplicate centos 6 on 133 computers. I purchased a disk duplicator make my master and the duplicator does 11 at a time. All is good so far... When I take a duplicated disk and stick it in the "new" box which is different than the master machine of course all seems to work except the network. So of course the MAC address for the NIC doesn't match so the network doesn't work. My solution was to edit ifcfg-eth0 and remove the HDADDR line and edit udev/70-persistant-net.rules and remove the MAC address from the network SUBSYSTEM line. The network does come back on and everything seems fine. Is this the correct way to do this? Making a master and being able to stick the duplicated disk in another machine? Thanks, Jerry

Actual Solution: You don't have to change anything on these laptops. But it is a good tip that when installing from external cd/dvdrom, if it first does not work, change usb port and try again. I changed back the BIOS to AHCI. I was previously plugged into the top left USB port I.e. the one on the left hand side closes to the monitor or back side. When lenovo's external CDROM/DVD is plugged into this port, I am unable to install linux in general or other OS's. Once I plug it into any of the other USB ports bottom left or right, it works perfectly. No wonder I haven't found any problem posts regarding x220 and CentOS/RHEL. Where do I find a gnumeric rpm? I must not have enough repos listed. (I recently had to rebuild my system pretty much from scratch. :( )

persistent custom lines in /etc/hosts?

Hello there, I've edited /etc/hosts to add few custom IP/hostnames couples. After each reboot, I have to add them again. I've then added /etc/sysconfig/network/hosts, but it seems to ignore it or at least ignore 127.0.0.1 assignments I'm doing in it. Is there a mechanism I'm not aware of, or doing things wrong to make my custom IP/hostnames assignments permanent after network services restart? Regards, -- wwp

CentOS 6: ethernet "ifconfig up" failure

On my CentOS 6 partition of my laptop: First note that for this test, NetworkManager is not running because I did: chkconfig --del NetworkManager and then rebooted. Here is my ifcfg-eth0: DEVICE="eth0" NM_CONTROLLED="no" ONBOOT=no HWADDR=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx TYPE=Ethernet BOOTPROTO=none IPADDR=192.168.2.5 PREFIX=24 GATEWAY=192.168.2.1 DNS1=192.168.2.1 DNS2=192.168.2.1 DEFROUTE=yes IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes IPV6INIT=no NAME="System eth0" UUID=xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx I reboot to level3, do startx (to KDE 4) then do: # ifconfig eth0 up # ping 192.168.9.1 connect: Network is unreachable If I edit ifcfg-eth0 to set ONBOOT=yes and reboot, I get a proper connection. So why is "ifconfig eth0 up" not connecting? Thanks for your help. Mike.

KVM on CentOS 6

Today I suddenly have two VMs that have read only file systems. The host is CentOS 6, as are the two VMs with this problem. The first symptom was on a new VM I installed ISPConfig onto. I got through the entire process with only a dependency issue between php-pecl_apc and php-accelerator. After completing the installation I noticed some funny things, but I assumed it might be the addition of quotas and remounting with quotas on. so I didn't think much of it and rebooted the VM. It failed to reboot because the file system should not be switched to read-write. Since it was a new VM and installing ISPConfig was an experiment, I just wiped it with the intention of starting over. While I was creating another clone of a CentOS 6 image on the host, I looked into one of the other VMs running on that host, which has been up and running for 47 days. Same problem, without rebooting. Now that I am looking at the output from the mount command I wonder where all those named related mounts came from. Could it be webmin. Both VMs have webmin installed. Mostly to allow be to configure bind, since system-config-bind is no more. Anybody have any idea what happened, or better yet, any ideas on how to fix this? Emmett

XORG and LCD Projector

dear guys, I have a problem between my CentOS 5.5 (on Axioo notebook) and LCD Projector. When I connect my notebook to LCD Projector, it can detect my notebook. But when I press Fn + F7 to activate dual monitor between my notebook and LCD Projector it goes to blank screen. FYI, the LCD Projector is NEC but I don't know the series. I've tried to change display using dual head monitor but it has no effects. Centos NFS-Utils

Just wondering, We have been using RHEL 6.1 for a while and its NFS-utils support the fsc option for caching. Will Centos 5.6(or .7) ever support this feature? -- --- Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.--

Postfix Question - CentOS 6

I'm trying to figure out if this is a bug... I'm running Postfix with Dovecot Authentication and have Amavisd-new as the front end. I fought with the install and in particular being able to send mail.... Auth failed. Hours of looking through all the config files yielded nothing... so I started Googling about. I finally found a comment at the bottom of a blog to check permissions on: /var/spool/postfix/private/auth It seems this must be owned by postfix but it was owned by root. So, can somebody check to see if this is there in a CentOS 6 Postfix install where Amavis is not installed? And if so, what are the default permissions? Thanks, John Hinton

I guess the reason I am doing it, is as I love the way CentOS works, I.e. the stability and performance. I am currently running it on a ThinkPad Edge 11 and all seems to work great. Just looks like the e1000e NIC driver is not working with the kernel in 6.0. I have also tried this with RHEL 6.1 but that also gets me stuck at the booting of the x220. I have tried to understand how the "load driver disk" works with CentOS and RHEL based systems, but I am failing to get it working. I have got my hands on the e1000e driver and patched the initrd but still no go. That's why I wanted to check if anyone else has got this working :) Anyone else?
