SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. Virtual Machine Manager error

IE 9 not sending digest auth info

I migrated our internal wiki server last week, and some IE users aren't able to authenticate. The service is hosted by Apache using Digest authentication. It migrated from Apache 2.2.9 (Debian 5) to Apache 2.2.15 (CentOS 6). The internal hostname for the wiki server is a DNS CNAME that was repointed from one host to another during the cutover. In a normal session, 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client sends GET with Authorization header 4. Server sends 200 with Authentication-Info header and page content When using IE 9 (and possibly 8, I'm still trying to track that down), 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client resends GET (*without* Authorization header) 4. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 5. Etc. IE seems to be ignoring 401 and/or the WWW-Authenticate headers. Using Chrome on Windows works fine; the issues are specific to IE. Any ideas? A desktop Centos remix

Hello Centos users! I'm doing a Centos 6 desktop oriented remix called Stella. This has been brewing since the summer and it's starting to get ready. :-) I've backported a lot of packages from Fedora and Rpmfusion and I bundle several other repos, too, resulting in a big range of software available, including but not limited to: LibreOffice, VLC, MPlayer, Shutter, Arista, Java, Flash, GParted, extra wifi drivers etc. You can read (just slightly) more about it here: http://li.nux.ro/stella. iso size?

I've been being told, over and over, by K3B, Brasero, and Isomaster, on two machines, with three different downloads of 6.0, that the file is too large for the medium. Nautilus and the browser that die each download all say it's 4.4 GB; I've tried with two +R and an RW DVD, all of which are labelled 4.7 GB Two of the files are 32-bit, and one is 64 What is going wrong?? -- Beartooth Staffwright, Not Quite Clueless Power User I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is.

Upgrade Question

We've got about 200 existing servers running CentOS/RHEL 5.6 and all new servers are being provisioned using CentOS/RHEL 6.1. So that everything is consistent we need to upgrade the servers running CentOS/RHEL 5.6. I've searched the CentOS wiki, the Red Hat site, and the internet looking for something official on upgrading/migrating from CentOS/RHEL 5.x to CentOS/RHEL 6.x. There's got to be a way other than having 2 times hardware. Any ideas??? Thanks, Gene Poole + It's impossible for everything to be true. +

CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?

USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev: Jun 27 19:53:37 torch kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sde at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch scsi.agent[13576]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host11/target11:0:0/11:0:0:0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! Rebasing to 699 I restarted hald (service haldaemon restart) and it picked up one of the two devices I'd plugged in, but not the other.

Centos 5.7--desktop icons are now a blank sheet of paper with the .desktop filename and they don't work

Just rebooted my box (switched keyboards, and since it's a PS/2 keyboard, it needs to be done at poweroff) and when it came back up, (almost) all the desktop icons I've created (as distinct from the ones that came with the system) now don't display correctly. Instead of the graphic assigned to each, it's just a picture of a blank sheet of paper with the corner folded over, and the icon text is the name of the .desktop file that defines the particular item. worse, when I click one, they don't work... I get a popup window containing this text (when attempting to fire up a local rebuild of Audacity, or the appropriate name when attempting to use one of the other ones): The filename "Audacity (local build).desktop" indicates that this file is of type "desktop document". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "desktop configuration file". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system. Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "desktop configuration file", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file. And at this point I have working VM from the tar copy, _except_ that it isn't matching a driver to the virtual NIC. I'm glad I'm not restoring a real backup with a dead machine here... Since I don't need this today, I think I'll try ReaR to see if it gets it right. It builds a bootable iso that is supposed to re-install on bare metal. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com
