There is no mod-rails rpm package for any distro that I am aware of. Mod-rails is a rubygem available from http://rubygems.org/ and is named passenger. You will need Rubygems installed, which is part of the default ruby-1.8.7 package install on CentOS-6. Installing mod-rails has two parts: First install the passenger gem (# gem passenger). Next, run the appropriate build command for the httpd server that you are using, Apache or Nginx (# passenger-install-apache2-module). You will require a complete http development build environment for this to work. See http://www.modrails.com/install.html. Htaccess management with GUI

My webhotel client wants to be able to manage password protection of their website with GUI. They need to create and destroy directories, set .htaccess authentication, and create usernames and passwords. There seem to be a number of tools that do this, more or less: http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/htaccessweb.htm However, I have not found any good comparisons or reviews. Has anyone tested this kind of tools? - Jussi

Hi all :) Using lm_sensors, I can see few temperature indicator. M/B Temp: +39°C (low = +15°C, high = +40°C) sensor = thermistor CPU Temp: +33°C (low = +15°C, high = +45°C) sensor = thermistor Temp3: +53°C (low = +15°C, high = +45°C) sensor = diode What is that Temp3? It's the hottest. Which one is the best to use if I want to use lm_sensor as a general indicator of my server room temperature? (my request to buy a Mini Goose temperature monitor is still pending). One of my servers wont boot today

Hi All, One of my servers upon a restart today comes up with an error checking filesystems: fsck.ext3: no such file or directory while trying to open /dev/VolGroup-1/Logvol00. /dev/VolGroup-1/LogVol00. The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <device> I dropped into the shell and tried mounting: mount -t ext3 /dev/VolGroup-1/LogVol00 I tried booting to media and do 'linux rescue' but it could not mount file filesystems either and nothing at all ends up in /mnt/sysimage. I think this was caused by installing quotas and changing /etc/fstab to add ,usrquota,grpquota. There are 2 x 1tb drives, software raid, mirrored. Can anyone provide advice on how to solve? I would think if I could get /etc/fstab edited back to normal I would be all set. -Jason

Hi, After applying the patch as described by the wiki ( wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Virtualization/VirtualBox/CentOSguest), install.sh still results in a Fail at: Building the OpenGL support module. I don't know how to start debugging myself. Any advise would be welcome. Kind regards, Henri

CentOS 6.2 KDE desktop with KDM - need guidance

I want a CentOS 62 (amd64) KDE desktop with KDM as the GUI login manager. My system environment is as follows: Host OS: openSUSE 11.4 .(amd64) with VirtualBox (64 bit) GuestOS: CentOS 6.2 (amd64) 10GB virtual disk I chose the "Customize Now" option in the installer and chose "KDE" group w/o the "Desktop" group. The system boots to a CLI console. I can login and see that the KDE rpms including kdm are installed but startx gives no joy [1]. I figured that the "Desktop" group is required so chose it in the 2nd try. This time system boots with the GDM login manager; I can choose a GNOME or a KDE desktop from the GDM. Searched around but could not find the GUI switcher applet to switch from GNOME to KDE. Tried the method in this link (albeit it is for 5.x) <http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.1/Deployment_Guide/s2-sysconfig-desktop…> In 6.2 the file "/etc/sysconfig/desktop" does *not* exist, so I created it with the two variables - still no joy. Finally, I hacked the script "/etc/X11/prefdm" and changed the order of the two lines in the Fallback to put kdm before gdm as shown below. <code> .... snip .... To be noted that line "[ -n "$preferred" ] && exec $preferred ..." does not work since my preference is KDE/KDM (it should have initialized to KDM) but instead it goes into the Fallback section wherein gdm (the original Display Manager) is initialized irrespective of what is in /etc/sysconfig/desktop. Although, I have achieved my objective with this hack, I think I am missing something (a CLI/GUI utility) which would have allowed me to change to KDM w/o hacking the script. Also, I noticed that the KDE menus did not list any item to install/remove and update the software packages on the system. I Are the gtk apps. "Add/Remove Software" and "Software Update" the only tools for this tasks? I need a minimalist KDE desktop environment with the minimum of gtk libs and GNOME apps. Thanks for any guidance/pointers to be able do so. [1] The installer should have automatically selected the "Desktop" group if it is essential for a graphical desktop. TIA -- Arun Khan

A Hardware Observation (and Thank You To John Pierce)

A few days ago, John Pierce made a comment about Intel network cards and that they are more reliable and a better overall card than most. (This is not exactly what he said, but rather I am paraphrasing) My small cluster of servers all had generic PCI nics in them (I was not using any onboard NICS). Today, I replaced the NICS with Intel Pro 1000 PCI-E NICS and replaces our small 5 port TP-Link GB switch with a nice 8 port Cisco GB switch and what a world of difference. The network is zippier for sure. Copying large files between machines using 'scp' is faster, our websites come up better (testing from my wife's work) too. I know some have joked about the PB conversation in terms of not realizing the amount of electricity and space it will take, but I really do read and pay attention and try not to ask totally stupid questions. (OT): Horde initial SQL setup

I haven't been able to find anything useful on the horde sites, and I haven't found anything useful with 'yum search'. I am trying to set up horde webmail using the PEAR install on a new CentOS 5 system intending to migrate existing horde-3.x sites to horde-4.x. The PEAR installation procedure asked for the database type, db name, and password. I had not created the mysql database before running the installation thinking that this would be done as part of the installation (silly me :-). I know little or nothing about the internals of PEAR as I generally avoid PHP if at all possible so I don't know what's necessary to nuke the entire installation and start from scratch other than to restore the VMware VM from the snapshot I made before starting this project. In the past I have done this manually from the various tarballs available from horde.org, and these had the appropriate SQL scripts to initialize mysql and postgresql back ends. The PEAR installation doesn't seem to have these, nor do the sources obtained with 'git'. They do have upgrade scripts to update from various earlier version of horde which could work for existing installations, but would require more work with new installs. I tried finding appropriate SRPMs so I could look at their SPEC files to see how others have done this, but haven't been able to find ones for horde-4.x. The options seem to be: + Get SQL scripts to create the necessary databases. + Find the appropriate SPRMs for the horde components to see how they take care of this in their %post installation processing. + Uninstall the existing stuff using pear, and start from scratch after first creating the appropriate database. + Give up and continue to use the older versions of horde components which do work.
