- problem with reboot or shutdown

hi all, I have a problem with my CentOS 6.3 distribution only when I restart or turn off the machine it does not restart properly. remains in both cases black screen and then I do not understand exactly what he's doing. grub after I hit send and then darkness. only after that forcement for a further time the power cycle then it works. the kernel version is 2.6.32-279.14.1.el6.i686 where is the problem? thanks in advance cheers

grub.conf corrupt in boot grub, fine in rescue shell

I'm trying to load CentOS 6.3 on a used server based on a Tyan Tomcat n3400b motherboard. The first 2 drives are configured as a RAID mirror in the BIOS and the remaining 4 drives are not configured but apparently still have RAID metadata on them. I hadn't yet figured out how to fix that but went ahead and loaded the OS on the mirrored set. After pulling out a drive from the unused set, grub stopped at the grub prompt. I can find (hd0,0)/grub/grub.conf but when I cat it I get corruption with recognizable fragments. I can use setup (hd0) without issue but reboots keep dumping me at the grub prompt. I booted into the rescue environment of the minimal install CD and grub.conf looks just fine. It's only corrupt when I look at it from the grub boot environment. What could be going wrong?

Cannot build custom locale with utf-8 charset

I am trying, without success, to compile a custom locale for the utf-8 character set. Would these be the right rpm's for my friend to install to get his RT5390 working? No wait, I found this using the Add/Remove software tool. The rt2860 rpm says, "This package contains the firmware required by Ralink RT28XX/RT30XX". I don't see a package for the RT53XX. Building a C5 chroot on a C6 machine

I'm trying to do something slightly silly; rather than having a C5 machine and a C6 machine around for compiling and testing, I want to create a C5 chroot area. Something similar to "mock" but using lvm snapshots and some local config specific stuff. (Potentially even using Linux Containers to enter the chroot environment). So I thought I'd build out the chroot... % cat /etc/yum.repos.d/c5.repo [c5] name=CentOS-$releasever - Media baseurl=http://repo/CentOS/DVD/CentOS-5-x86_64/ gpgcheck=0 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5 enabled=0 [c5-update] name=CentOS-$releasever - Updates local baseurl=http://repo/CentOS/updates/centos5/x86_64/ gpgcheck=0 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-5 enabled=0 Now I can do yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=c5* -y --installroot=$ROOT install $rpms (where $rpms is derived from what anaconda left behind on an old install) So far so... "ok". Some issues with post-install scripts breaking, but it mostly works. home directory server performance issues

I’m looking for advice and considerations on how to optimally setup and deploy an NFS-based home directory server. In particular: (1) how to determine hardware requirements, and (2) how to best setup and configure the server. We actually have a system in place, but the performance is pretty bad---the users often experience a fair amount of lag (1--5 seconds) when doing anything on their home directories, including an “ls” or writing a small text file. So now I’m trying to back-up and determine, is it simply a configuration issue, or is the hardware inadequate? Our scenario: we have about 25 users, mostly software developers and analysts. The users login to one or more of about 40 development servers. All users’ home directories live on a single server (no login except root); that server does an NFSv4 export which is mounted by all dev servers. The home directory server hardware is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. RAID controller is a Dell PERC H700 w/512MB cache (Linux sees this as a LSI MegaSAS 9260). OS is CentOS 5.6, home directory partition is ext3, with options “rw,data=journal,usrquota”. I have the HW RAID configured to present two virtual disks to the OS: /dev/sda for the OS (boot, root and swap partitions), and /dev/sdb for the home directories. If this is true, is there any way to *quantify* the effects of partition mis-alignment on performance? In general, what is the best way to determine the source of our performance issues? Right now, I’m running “iostat -dkxt 30” re-directed to a file. I intend to let this run for a day or so, and write a script to produce some statistics. Why is this? I would expect sda to generally be idle, or have minimal utilization. According to both “free” and “vmstat”, this server is not swapping at all. At one point, our problems were due to a random user writing a huge file to their home directory. We built a second server specifically for people to use for writing large temporary files. That server is fairly different though: dual E5-2340 CPUs (more cores, but lower clock), 32 GB RAM. Disk subsystem is Dell PERC 710 (LSI MegaRAID SAS 2208), and drives are 7200 RPM 1GB (SEAGATE ST1000NM0001) in RAID-6. The OS is CentOS 6.3, NFS partition is ext4 with options “rw,relatime,barrier=1,data=ordered,usrquota”. Ultimately, I plan to rebuild the home directory server with CentOS 6 (instead of 5), and align the partitions properly. But as of now, I don’t have a rational reason for doing that other than the other server with this config doesn’t have performance problems. I’d like to be able to say specifically (i.e. quantify) exactly where the problems are and how they will be addressed by the upgrade/config change. I’ll add that we want to use the “sec=krb5p” (i.e. encrypt everything) mount option for the home directories. We tried that with the home directory server, and it became virtually unusable. But we use that option on the other server, with no issue. For now, as a stop-gap, we are just using the “sec=krb5” mount option (i.e., no encryption). The server is still laggy, but at least usable. fixing partition alignment ?

Hi there, I've discovered that most of the hard drives used in our cluster got misaligned partitions, thus crippling perfs. Is there any way to fix that without having to delete/recreate properly aligned partitions, then format it and refill disks ? I'd be glad not to have to toy with moving several 10s of TB disk by disk :D (most disks are JBOD as we're using a fault tolerant network FS, moosefs not to name it). <insert your favorite search engine> wasn't helpful, unfortunately. Drives are ext4, driven by C6 x86_64. Thanks, Laurent.
