Audio weirdness on CentOS 6.2 with flash?

Hi List, I have an ASUS G73S laptop with our favorite OS installed and all up-to-date. Sound has always "just worked" When I use the Preferences>Sound app I can setup the hardware, input, output and was overall very impressed. One can check each speaker and the laptop has a front left and right and also has a bass speaker which seems to be connected to the left rear. The various players seem to work fine e.g mplayer, JuK, VLC media player. Recently I wanted to play a movie off the internet and so out came Firefox. Imagine my surprise as I hear only the background music from the rear channel - the front left and right appear to have disappeared. When I plug in some headphones, it seems that the phones only pick up right rear and left rear - front left and right are gone (laptop speakers are muted due to headphones being plugged in) So one cannot listen to audio from internet via flash player........ I have the high definition digital audio disabled as I understand this is for the HDMI audio system which I have not played with. Strange queries in httpd log

How is it possible that I get this kind of queries on my webserver (extract from httpd access log): 58.218.199.250 - - [22/Feb/2012:15:23:06 +0200] "GET http://financeande.com/feed/feed.php HTTP/1.1" 404 291 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)" ...when the DNS shows that the domain financeande.com is hosted elsewhere? e2fsprogs 1.42 EXT4 > 16TB RAID

Hi All, I was thinking of using ext4 on a new raid system of 20TB. I had read the article (halfway done the page) titled "Linux File System Fsck Testing -- The Results Are In" https://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=26180 They used CentOS 5.7 (2.6.18-274 kernel) and they state "The stock configuration was used throughput the testing except for one component. The e2fsprogs package was upgraded to version 1.42, enabling ext4 file systems larger than 16TB to be created." I have looked for an "el6" version of "e2fsprogs 1.42" with no joy. Any ideas anyone? Pam problems

I'm having problems with what I think is PAM. Seems that ever since Centos 5, proftpd has had problems using pam, and with Centos 6.2 64 bit, I had to quit using it altogether with proftpd. Now I'm trying to set up SMTP AUTH using PAM as the pwcheck parm to saslauthd, and I can't setup new email accounts on my port submission (587) to work at all. We use this port of sendmail so outside users can send through our own email server. The crazy thing is that users that were setup previously before my migration from an older Centos 3 box to the new box can still use the port fine on the new server. But I can't get a new account to work. I'm not seeing any errors anywhere, but when trying to configure an account manually in Thunderbird, it fails whenever I use port 587. I've got a similar host on using old Centos 3 that still works fine and I'm using it as a model along with the settings on the original Centos 3 host that was replaced for most of my parameters. Anyone had any experience with sendmail and this sort of thing on Centos 6.2? I've stared at this thing for days and tried about everything I can think of. The yum says pam is up to date. I have at the least the same pam packages, if not more, on the new server as the old ones. Any help would be appreciated. steve campbell

Really bad KVM disk performance

Hi Gang, I recently rented a server at a datacenter with Centos 5.7 X64, Q9550 Processor, 8GB Ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 16mb cache). They had loaded it with KVM, and installed a 30-day trial of Virtualizor as the front-end for KVM. I was so impressed with how fasts the guests ran that I want to build a few of these machines for myself. I just installed one: same Q9550 processor, 4GB ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 32mb cache). I installed Centos 6.2 X64, and installed Webmin's Cloudmin as the front-end. Immediately when I was installing stuff, I could tell this new system I just built was not nearly as fast as the first one. I ran some CPU and disk benchmarking programs, and saw that while the CPU stuff tested similarly, the disk thruput was much different... Down-right poor in one of the guests! On both systems, /dev/md2 is a LVM reserved exclusively for KVM guests. So each guest is running in its own logical volume, in software raid. Thinking there may be something wrong with the HDs, I ran Bonnie ( http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/ ) and compared both host machines. They tested fairly similar (within 10%). Yet comparing their guests is like night and day. I realize I do have two different front-ends to KVM, and perhaps they are passing different parameters to it. I am also running the KVM from Centos 6.2 on my machine, vs the other server is running on 5.7, but I would have thought that "newer is better". Also note that my hard drives have a larger cache. On a side note, I'm not thrilled with the Virtualizor's tech support, but the product seems easy to use, once it actually works. Cloudmin seems to be buggy, and not let you do things like change cd images on the fly, access the console before the machine fully boots (!)... Any suggestions on other, preferably open-source options? I'm a definite newbie to this virtualization stuff. Bob

System reboots automatically more or less every two days

Good Evening, I have a problem with CentOS 6.2. On December 2011 I installed CentOS 6.1 on a HP ProLiant DL 165 G7 server. Recentely I upgraded to CentOS 6.2 but at reboot the system didn't startup. So I removed new kernel kernel-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6 and CentOS was again able to startup with original kernel-2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64. I'd like to learn indeed but feel like lost in a very big ocean. please if you may give any outline that would be awesome or even a title for a good book to start with.
