Z-Stream?

Hi, I just learned that there exists a "z-stream" channel upstream that apparently carries some important bugfixes. Does anyone know what the policies are for this channel and how this relates to centos releases? Regards, Dennis

A desktop Centos remix

Hello Centos users! I'm doing a Centos 6 desktop oriented remix called Stella. This has been brewing since the summer and it's starting to get ready. :-) I've backported a lot of packages from Fedora and Rpmfusion and I bundle several other repos, too, resulting in a big range of software available, including but not limited to: LibreOffice, VLC, MPlayer, Shutter, Arista, Java, Flash, GParted, extra wifi drivers etc. You can read (just slightly) more about it here: http://li.nux.ro/stella. hack / spam/ probe /attack

so last night all my servers were severely probed and they tried to violate me (lol) the attack was so egregious I decided to contact the isp for that ip. Telepacific. The ip has some google searches that point to a few spam and a few attacks...So i assume a compromised server. So I sent them the info and said it must be a hacked server (the ip is on their business network) they responded ' you are not a customer and we cannot by law discuss a customer with you' They wanted me to contact my datacenter so they could look into it. I responded and told them the info again and they basically said it is up to my isp or datacenter to deal with it and to basically 'go away' that was my first attempt to notify an isp about a hacker/hacked computer on their servers....did not go so well. Is that the way they all deal with these issues? was not expecting that from the isp

Installation of CentOS 6 on KVM - Hangs

Greetings- I'm attempting to install CentOS-6 x86_64 to a virtual machine running via KVM on a Proxmox 1.9 system. The specs are 4x CPUs, 4GB RAM, and 160GB HDD. Installation proceeds fine using either minimal or netinstall CDs until installation of the selinux or qla2xx-firmware RPMs. At this point, the installation hangs, and never completes. I'm unable to see what is going on 'under the hood' on another TTY as the console does not appear to be accepting my CTL-ALT-Fx commands either. I have also tried installing using the full bin DVD1, but the initial installation errors out immediately noting the yum package cannot be read from source disk/etc. And yes, I have checked the MD5s on all downloaded ISOs. I can readily duplicate this. Any thoughts or pointers on the cause and/or solution? Thanks! --Tim

VMWare Issue

Ok. I run several linux distro's via vmware on top of my windows 7 machine. Currently have an Ubuntu 32-bit 10.4 guest for work. An Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit for misc stuff. Also an OEL 6.2 guest running an oracle database. I just installed CentOS 5.6 32-bit and I can't get the display to work right. When it first boots, the screen is very small and almost impossible to select the username field and log in. Once I log in if I de-select full screen and then re-select full-screen it updates to the correct size. I've installed vmware tools three times now. Inside the centos guess I set my resolution to 1920x1200, which matches my windows 7 machine as well as the resolution I run the other linux guests at. I set the monitor to "generic 1920x1200 LCD" because my monitor type isn't detected. (Samsung P2770H) Video adapter is set to vmware. (Actual device is an ATI HD 6950) Anyone have any ideas?

Setting overcommit_memory=2 kills system

Hello, In general I am in the habit of turning off memory overcommit because I believe it's a bad thing in a multi-user environment. This was never a problem on rhel5 systems, but on rhel6, I am having issues. When I try to set overcommit_memory=2, my system locks up. It basically behaves as if the memory is all used up... I see the same behavior on centos6 or rhel6. If I set the overcommit values in /etc/sysctl.conf and then reboot, the values get set correctly on boot and everything seems fine. In addition I can then change the value of overcommit_memory to 0 and back to 2 with out any ill affects. Searches for issues with setting overcommit_memory=2 haven't turned up anything useful.. 6.2 minimal install NIC driver issue

I tried to upgrade one user's system, a Dell Optiplex GX620, and yum got a GPF. After *much* grief, I finally gave up, and rebuilt the system. Or, rather, I'm trying to. First problem: I did a minimal install from the graphical installer - I don't know if that's relevant - but when it boots, it does *not* install the NIC driver, tg3, on boot. I've got eth0 defined in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistant-net.rules, I made an /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, and it's onboot, and in /etc/sysconfig/network, that says yes. As soon as I *manually* modprobe tg3, the network comes up. I'm still trying to solve the libpython2.6 update that GPFs.... I haven't had this on anyone else that was getting the 2.6.32-220.17 update.... mark

kernel: nfs: RPC call returned error 88

We have a 2-node Oracle RAC that keeps getting the following error: kernel: nfs: RPC call returned error 88 The storage being mounted is netapp. We don't see any errors/issues on the storage itself or the switches this client is connecting thru. The NFS network is a 2-interface ( 2 x 1Gb UTP) bond which shows no errors of any kind. We are mounting with the following mount options: rw,noac,nointr,bg,hard,timeo= 600,wsize=32768,rsize=32768,nfsvers=3,tcp This problem sometimes hits the OCR votedisk shares and causes the instance to crash. These systems were upgraded to 5.6 back in January. Currently running 2.6.32-300.4.1. Thanks for any info,

Postfix will not start due to permission errors on CentOS 6.2 x86

Hello everyone, I cannot get the Postfix service to start on my pristine copy of CentOS 6.2 (installed straight from a DVD, and 6.2 directly, not 6.0 with upgrades...not thatit should matter). Anyway, I copied over /var/spool/mail to this system by using tar, as well as /etc/services and /etc/passwd, etc. Now, it doesn't want to start. I get permission errors like: postfix/master: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup pid 2006 exit 1 postfix/master:warning /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup: bad command startup -- throttling postfix/pickup: fatal: scan_dir_push: open directory maildrop: permission denied warning: the postfix sendmail command has set-uid root file permissions warning: or the command is run from a set-uid root process warning: the Postfix sendmail command must be installed without set-uid root file permissions Now, I Googled these errors, and didn't see any good specific help for CentOS. So, I did a yum erase postfix, which also erased dependencies. After I did that, I erased the /etc/postfix directory. I then reinstalled postfix with all the dependencies...and got the same errors. Then I googled the CentOS mailing list for help...nothing that applied to me turned up that I saw. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
