Create Virtual Machine via HTTP or FTP

Hi, I'm trying to create a Virtual Machine using Network Install mode (I tried HTTP and FTP). The HTTP/FTP server where the installation files are located is the Host Machine. The URL that I'm using is: http://192.168.1.104/inst and the Automatic detect option detects the OS without problem. When the installation starts I got an error: Unable to retrieve http://192.168.1.104/inst/images/install.img I tried different path but I always get the same error. The host machine is a Centos 6.2 (2.6.32.-220.el6.x86_64) I really appreciate any help with this problem. Thanks in advance,

Building CentOS 6.2 custom install media

Hi, For the OLPC school server ("XS") we are planning to move from our dated F9 setup to CentOS 6.2. Thanks for all the effort involved in producing this distro. One important part of this project is a 'respin' of the install media - we need to add a handful of packages from external repositories, and maybe run a command late in the install. Are the scripts/configurations used to produce the CentOS official CD/DVDs available? I guess this would be our most reliable/sensible starting point. I am familiar with pungi, kickstart, anaconda, etc, so just a simple git link would be enough to get me started. Thanks, Daniel

CentOS 6 : Tip for significantly increasing battery life / reducing power consumption (Thinkpad X220 Tablet)

Hello, I was not happy with the power consumption of CentOS 6 x86_64 on a new Lenovo Thinkpad x220 Tablet and I worked on reducing it. I just wanted to share with the list one of the changes which gave me the most significant improvement. As per http://www.williambrownstreet.net/blog/?p=387, add the following kernel arguments to the GRUB boot configuration: pcie_aspm=force i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 (in /boot/efi/EFI/redhat/grub.conf since I use EFI, /boot/grub/grub.conf otherwise) As measured using PowerTop, this made the power consumption decrease from 20W to 11W ! (I had already decreased it from 25W to 20W with the usual tips of disabling hardware, shutting down services, switching tuned profiles, etc.) All in all, battery time was more than multiplied by two, and the computer is now much more silent since the fan is not always running like mad in order to cool the processor. The bottom of the laptop is not anymore hot as hell. I don't know whether this would have an impact on other hardware, but it may be worth looking at it (even on servers?), since the above link points to descriptions of a regression in the kernel which seems more general. CentOS 6 early panic on ESXi 4.1.0 build 800380

I run VMware vSphere 4 Essentials with three almost identically configured ESXi 4.1 hosts and a mix of 32 and 64 bit guests including Windows 2003 and 2008 as well as CentOS 5 and 6. Recently I updated one of the hosts to build 800380. The new build runs Windows and CentOS 5 VMs fine, but CentOS 6 guests won't come up. I tried two different CentOS 6 VMs. Both have the latest standard kernel (2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.x86_64). Both run perfectly fine on one of the other VMware hosts still running ESXi 4.1.0 build 702113. On build 800380, both display the GRUB menu alright but freeze immediately afterwards, emitting the message PANIC: early exception 0d rip 10:ffffffff81038879 error 0 cr2 0 on the bottom of the virtual console. Both run perfectly fine again once I move them back to the host with the older ESXi build. Building Dovecot CentOS 5 RPMs with custom LDAP packages

Hi, We are (still) mainly using CentOS 5 (5.8 x86_64). As CentOS / EL 5 standard OpenLDAP packages are rather old (2.3.x), we've been using LTB OpenLDAP packages ( http://ltb-project.org/wiki/download#openldap) which get installed in non-standard file system locations. I am not much experienced in building RPMs and preparing spec files. We are currently using dovecot RPM packages from the atrpms repo (http://packages.atrpms.net/dist/el5/dovecot/) I would like to re-build Dovecot packages based on the LTB OpenLDAP RPM packages (OpenLDAP v2.4.x), esp. because I see that ATRPMs Dovecot RPM packages are built using OpenLDAP v2.3 devel code (i.e. standard CentOS OpenLDAP devel packages). In http://dl.atrpms.net/all/dovecot.spec I see: ------------------------------------------------ BuildRequires: openldap-devel, cyrus-sasl-devel ... IE 9 not sending digest auth info

I migrated our internal wiki server last week, and some IE users aren't able to authenticate. The service is hosted by Apache using Digest authentication. It migrated from Apache 2.2.9 (Debian 5) to Apache 2.2.15 (CentOS 6). The internal hostname for the wiki server is a DNS CNAME that was repointed from one host to another during the cutover. In a normal session, 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client sends GET with Authorization header 4. Server sends 200 with Authentication-Info header and page content When using IE 9 (and possibly 8, I'm still trying to track that down), 1. Client sends GET 2. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 3. Client resends GET (*without* Authorization header) 4. Server sends 401 with WWW-Authenticate header 5. Etc. IE seems to be ignoring 401 and/or the WWW-Authenticate headers. Using Chrome on Windows works fine; the issues are specific to IE. Any ideas? CentOS 6.2 on partitionable mdadm RAID1 (md_d0) - kernel panic with either disk not present

centos6 - failsafe terminal on login screen

I have some clients that run centos6 and I need to have users be able to access the "failsafe terminal" from the login screen. The old options (from 4/5) for choosing your session aren't present. I've googled a bit on this but don't seem to be using a good search string as most of the hits have nothing to do with this and the rest aren't helpful. So, just wondering if anyone knows what I need to do to "turn on" session choosing from the login screen, and how to include the failsafe terminal. Thanks! Miranda

Routing issue

Deduplication data for CentOS?

Hi list, is there any working solution for deduplication of data for centos? We are trying to find a solution for our backup server which runs a bash script invoking xdelta(3). But having this functionality in fs is much more friendly... We have looked into lessfs, sdfs and ddar. Are these filesystems ready to use (on centos)? ddar is sthg different, I know. Thx Rainer

High memory needs

Dear All, We recently reinstalled our computing cluster. We were using CentOS 5.3 (32 bits). It is now CentOS 6.3 (64 bits), installed from the CentOS 6.2 x64 CD, then upgraded to 6.3. We have some issues with the memory needs of our running jobs. They require much more than before, it may be due to the switch from 32 to 64 bits, but to me this cannot explain the whole difference. Here are our investigations. We used the following simple benchmark: 1. Run a python script and check the memory that it requires (field "VIRT" of the "top" command). This script is: ---- import time time.sleep(30) print("done") ---- 2. Similarly, run and check the memory of a simple bash script: ---- #!/bin/bash sleep 30 echo "done" ---- 3. Open a R session and check the memory used I asked 10 of our users to run these three things on their personal PCs. They are running different distributions (mainly ubuntu, slackware), half of them use a 32 bits system, the other half a 64 one. Here is a summary of the results: Bash script: Avg Min Max 32 bits 5400 4192 9024 64 bits 12900 10000 16528 Python script: Avg Min Max 32 bits 8500 5004 11132 64 bits 32800 30000 36336 R: Avg Min Max 32 bits 26900 21000 33452 64 bits 100200 93008 97496 (as a side remark, the difference between 32 and 64 is surprisingly big to me...). Then we ran the same things on our CentOS cluster, getting surprisingly high results. I installed a machine from scratch with the CentOS CD (6.2 x64) to be sure another component of the cluster was not playing a role. On this freshly installed machine I get the following results: SH: 103MB PYTHON: 114MB R: 200MB So, compared to the highest of our users (among the 64 bits ones), we have a ratio of ~7, ~3, ~2, respectively. It is very problematic for us because many jobs now cannot run properly, because they lack memory on most of our computing nodes. So we really cannot stand the situation... Dear CentOS users, I run a small Facebook game at a CentOS 6.3 machine with PostgreSQL 8.4.3 + few PHP scripts + 1 Perl daemon and even though the server worked ok, I've suggested my users to double up the RAM to 32 GB and they have collected money for that. Now my problem is that I don't know, which knob to turn and how to really use the additional memory. I v run d netstat and no result(i.e no process is listening on port 1010). Also I telnet 127.0.0.1 1010 just 2 confirm that no process is using the port. fsck -fvy ?

Dear All My server got inconsistency from sudden power cut that I fixed it with #fsck -fvy /dev/hda at the maintenance prompt . But after reboot, one of the installed applications is preventing it from booting up (as can be seen in the boot up process list). Can you please let me know how can I remove it from the boot up list to reach the root user prompt and then re-install it again ? Thank you

Hi. On one of my servers aide just reported inode changes to a large bunch of files in a variety of directories, e.g. /usr/bin, /usr/sbin etc. This machine sits behind a couple of firewalls and it would be hard to get to. Prelink failure

I have a number of CentOS6 machines, and on one of them, the daily prelink cron job aborts. Any ideas what to look for? /etc/cron.daily/prelink: /etc/cron.daily/prelink: line 47: 9381 Aborted (core dumped) /usr/sbin/prelink -av $PRELINK_OPTS >> /var/log/prelink/prelink.log 2>&1 I'm unfamiliar with prelink, so I'm not sure what to look for in the logs. Grepping out recurring entries like "Could not find one of the dependencies", "^Prelinking", "^Linking", "undefined non-weak symbols", "Could not prelink", the interesting stuff remaining is /usr/sbin/prelink: /opt/lgtonmc/bin/libcommonssl2.so is not present in any config file directories, nor was specified on command line /usr/sbin/prelink: /usr/pgsql-9.1/lib/libpq.so.5.4 is not present in any config file directories, nor was specified on command line /usr/sbin/prelink: /usr/bin/emacs-23.1: COPY relocations don't point into .bss or .sbss section /usr/sbin/prelink: /usr/bin/emacs-23.1-nox: COPY relocations don't point into .bss or .sbss section Prelink failed with return value 134

From the way the information is presented by the OP it seems likely that the default method is used in this instance. If that user id is missing then it is likely that your install procedure did not complete properly.
