Well, I seem to be getting somewhere, although where exactly is open to question. I did this. I put the virtual interface address 192.168.0.1 back onto eth1 of the gateway host and restarted the network services. The ifcfg file looked like this: BOOTPROTO=none BROADCAST=192.168.255.255 DEVICE=eth1:192 IPADDR=192.168.0.1 IPV6INIT=no MTU="" NAME="LAN - Non-routable" NETMASK=255.255.0.0 NETWORK=192.168.0.0 ONBOOT=yes ONPARENT=yes After the restart ip addr showed this: 3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000 link/ether 00:25:90:60:11:8d brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet aaa.bbb.ccc.1/24 brd aaa.bbb.ccc.255 scope global eth1 inet 192.168.0.1/24 brd 192.168.255.255 scope global eth1:192 inet6 fe80::225:90ff:fe60:118d/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever Note the cidr suffix on 192.168.0.1 = 24 That is not what I expected. Restarting with the same config did not change the initially observed outcome. SO, I edited ifcfg-eth1:192 and added exactly one line: PREFIX="16" and restarted the network. ip addr now shows this: 3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UP qlen 1000 link/ether 00:25:90:60:11:8d brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff inet aaa.bbb.ccc.1/24 brd aaa.bbb.ccc.255 scope global eth1 inet 192.168.0.1/16 brd 192.168.255.255 scope global eth1:192 inet6 fe80::225:90ff:fe60:118d/64 scope link valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever Note that the cidr suffix is now 16. C6 VM text install not recognizing LV

The installation starts but once I get to the disk partitioning no disk is listed and I cannot continue the installation. Once upon a time, 2 days ago, the interface on the gateway system included ifcfg-eth1:192 which had the address 192.168.0.1 and the netmask 255.255.255.0. At that point I was not aware of any underlying problems and virtual interfaces on other hosts which had addresses like 192.168.216.ddd could be found and connected to from internal host addresses of the form aaa.bbb.ccc.0 where aaa.bbb.ccc is our publicly routable C class assigned address block. The difficulties started when I began testing a new virtual host which eventually will be moved off-site to our DR facility (which is a lot less impressive in fact than it appears when I write that, but at least we have one). On that machine, for no particular reason, I decided to use a different sub-net for the 192.168 IP on the VM guests eth1 i/f. When I did that the kvm host could connect to those i/f, presumably because its own eth1 was set to an address on the same netblock (192.168.209.43) but no other host could connect to either the host's eth1 or any of the running guests' eth1. This is what prompted the question which has turned into this thread. When I set this network up many ages ago I added 192.168.0.1 to the internal i/f of the gateway router in the apparently unfounded belief that if the router knew that the internal i/d had an address in the 192.168 address space then it would not try to route traffic destined for those addresses through the router. As I say, my knowledge of this is very limited. Although, to be fair, everything has worked as I expected up to now and this situation is simply an experiment of my own devising. So, I am hardly a walking accident waiting to happen. What I wanted to have happen was for all traffic destined for 192.168.anything to stay inside the LAN and attached to the specified address, while any traffic that originated from 192.168.anything destined to anywhere else would route through the gateway; where it is NAT mangled. I just want to understand what is going on in this specific case without delving deeply into the subject of routing, for which I do not have the luxury of time. This not impacting anything of significance so I take it up on a time available basis. Advice on partitioning a Dell MD1200 disk array

Hi, I've just got possession of a Dell PE R720 with 2 MD1200 disk enclosures. Both MD1200 are fully populated with 12 x 3 TB disks The system will basically be a student file-server running CentOS 6.x serving various size files from small c programs to multi gigabyte audio and video files over GB ethernet. The first MD1200 will be configured as the NFS disk. The requirements are for 6 fixed equally sized partitions, one for each cohort of students. For this I was thinking of splitting the MD1200 into 2 RAID5 arrays with a hot spare each. Then partitioning each into 3 ext4 partitions. The second MD1200 will be used to backup the first, using BackupPC and for other storage purposes. As I won't know the storage requirements for the "backup partition" and they will probably change over time anyway. I was thinking of using LVM for it. So how to partition the MD1200 for LVM. I don't want to put all 12 disks in a RAID5 and put a LVM volume on it. Can I split it into 2 RAID5 and have a LVM volume spanning both. Any suggestions. Just remember I'm due to retire at the end of this month so this will be my last big job for the Dept. And due to financial constraints I will not be replaced. So I will be handing this machine over to a co- worker who is basically a Windoze admin with only a basic knowledge of Linux so nothing too fancy. ;-) Thanks, Tony -- Tony Molloy CTO, Dept. of Comp. Booting and ignoring sysct.conf...

Hi, just wondering if there was a way to boot while ignoring sysctl.conf... A colleague messed up one parameter, that ended up crashing the server at boot time. Booting in single was not helping. Fixed it by booting on a live CD and modifying the sysctl file but, it would be convenient to know if there was a kernel parameter to add to the grub entry or something to bypass it... But I see it is run in /etc/init.d/functions, so maybe it is not avoidable. Thx, JD

CentOs6- Use nscd for offline LDAP

Dear All, I'm thinking about connecting the 15 or so laptops in our organisation to LDAP. Now I'm trying to use nscd in order to enable the users to work when being offline. The test laptop is installed for this occasion, updated CentOs6.3. Following the advise I found on a few posts I modified */etc/nscd.conf : * server-user nscd logfile /var/log/nscd.log debug-level 3 reload-count unlimited paranoia no enable-cache passwd yes positive-time-to-live passwd 3600 negative-time-to-live passwd 20 suggested-size passwd 211 check-files passwd yes persistent passwd yes shared passwd yes enable-cache group yes positive-time-to-live group 3600 negative-time-to-live group 60 suggested-size group 211 check-files group yes persistent group yes shared group yes enable-cache hosts yes I also Modified*/etc/nsswitch.conf*and changed the order after passwd - shadow - group : passwd: ldap files shadow: file ldap group: ldap files *This seems to work.* * When stopping nscd, LibreOffice gives the EM: /The application cannot be started. A general error occurred while accessing your central configuration. /*When starting nscd LibreOffice just works. *When enabling nscd a can su to an LDAP user from root, without nscd the user does not exist. *But the problem I'm having* is I was kinda hoping to log back in from a locked screen or from hibernation, in other words continue a running session. Recover software raid 10 on CentOS 6.3

The setup is 4 1TB drives running RAID10. I was using the Gnome Disk Utility to verify the integrity of the array (which is a 500MB mirrored md0 and the rest a R10 md1). I believe one of the drives is bad but prior to the system going offline it showed that 2 drives were detached from the array but healthy. A reboot results in a panic complaining that not enough mirrors are available. Is there a method to mount this array from a live CD so I can export the VM images. I have backups of the important ones but I'd lose 18 hours of data and a new PBX VM that was just finished but not backed up yet. I've been reading and testing various suggestions from the web but until I get this unit back up all phones and E-Mail are down, which leads to a slight panic, which makes it difficult to read and understand :) The backup server is at another location so I'm trying to recover first. Gradually adjust NTP sync over time?

Suppose you have server A and server B. Server B is running 60 seconds too fast, while server A is accurate. Is there a way to gradually move server B's time back into sync with server A, without making a drastic, immediate change to the clock? In other words, we would like to 'smear' the difference across several hours or days to ensure there are no drastic changes in timestamps, etc.

How do I set up a subversion repository so that svn can use an svnserve running locally? I own the repository. svnserve -d -r ... runs as me. svn mkdir -m 'make trunk' svn://localhost/redeye/trunk fails with svn: Authorization failed There is no request for credentials. suggestion for filesystem or general performance optimization

Hi, recently I noticed, that we have some performance issues regarding our central samba fileserver. Red Hat EL 5.8, samba3x-3.5.10-0.109. Doing a rsync, scp or accessing a share from a client and copy large files (e.g. 3 GB ISO), I do get a read / write average about 60 to 90 MB/sec. So LAN and general hardware can work at max. lan speed. But copying or syncing small files, e.g. user profiles etc. or doing a backup of the smaller files lets drop the average performance to 10 MB/Sec or less :( We use ext3 (noatime), the storage is connected by iscsi, it is a sun storage with sas harddisk. All suggestions so far: migrate to ext4 and good luck :) I read a couple of filesystem comparisons and ext4 looks like the best option, but what else could I do or expect? Locking? Limits ... blocksizes, more RAM (4GB installed), we have about 600GB of user data. so not really much... Thanks for any suggestion or hint . Regards . NTP server problem behind firewall

Hello! I would like to setup an NTP server for my Windows network using CentOS 6.3 with firewall turned on. As I learned the NTP protocol uses port 123 UDP. I have two NIC cards. One for internal network and one for access internet. Both cards in private address range. The problem is when I am using firewall described below the client cannot access the server. No idea why. Without firewall everything works flawless. So the problem is not in the NTP configuration. No idea why but with disabled firewall the first query gives error but all other query is work. I am using arpwatch to see what is happen on network (new machines and so). Not know is that related to the problem or not. First I had used the system-config-firewall generated firewall (standard firewall with port 123:udp added). No success, client cannot connect. Next I made a script for myself and saved with 'service iptables save' command. The configuration is: eth0 10.0.0.99/24 eth1 10.0.1.10/24 The script for making firewall rules: iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT iptables -F iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -p udp --dport 123 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -p tcp --dport 123 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -m limit --limit 5/min -j LOG --log-prefix "iptables denied: " --log-level 7 iptables -A INPUT -j DROP iptables -P FORWARD DROP iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT Windows client time server is set to 10.0.0.99. Just for sure I enabled 123 TCP as well even I think that was unnecessary. Network issue in CentOS 6.3

Hi Guys, Just found an issue with CentOS 6.3. The network is getting inaccessible at times. The server has been installed with CentOS 6 and then package upgrade was performed. = [~]# cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 6.3 (Final) [~]# = = [~]# uname -r 2.6.32-279.5.2.el6.x86_64 [~]# = The server is up for most of the time. But the next day when we check the server is inaccessible over network (through SSH). This happens often now. Do you have any suggestions? Is it a CentOS 6.3 bug? Regards Joby

Hi, I'm in the middle of migrating our oracle servers to RHEL and C6; while testing ntpd I'm seeing time resets. I see in sysconfig/ntpd the option g is set which means huge offset is one time ignored. But my understanding of ntpd is, it slows or accelerated kernel clock but does not make huge jumps... Is this really expected behaviour? OpenMPI I/O not working

Hi list, It appears there is a problem with the OpenMPI I/O library on CentOS 6.2 & 6.3 (package openmpi-1.5.4-1.el6.x86_64). When I compile the attached program it ends up in the error path since MPI_File_open returns 16. The corresponding (unhelpful) message is: MPI_ERR_OTHER: known error not in list I couldn't find any pointers on the net and the same program works with OpenMPI 1.4.5 on a debian system.
