building software raid.

dear All, I'm spending the afternoon trying to build software raid using this ( excellent ) guide : http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Install_On_Partitionable_RAID1 I'm doing this not only because this machine has no raid controller - I could go out and buy one - but also because I hope software raid will provide easier monitoring. This is a newly installed, updated Centos6.4 standard machine. So far I arrived at part1 step 4: -----> mdadm --add /dev/md_d0 /dev/sdb and this is on 16.6 % Looking at part 2 , step 2 : ------------> Edit /etc/fstab, you must change all mounts from using LABEL= to explicit device names, like /dev/md_d0p1, /dev/md_d0p2, ... I'm wondering where I can find the names md_d0p1, p2 and so on. Can anyone help me on this? Thanks very much. I had an issue recently where a package (openoffice) would not work correctly and: yum reinstall openoffice\* #did not help rpm -Va #did not find ANY issues (which surprised me when I did figure out what was wrong) however doing a (I did a more restricted, to openoffice files, version of) find /usr/ -not -perm -o+r -exec ls -lhd {} + find /usr/ -type d -not -perm -g+x -exec ls -lhd {} + find /usr/ -type d -not -perm -o+x -exec ls -lhd {} + found files that were not even set to write for ROOT (and in general had NO permission for anyone else)! The idea is basically that almost all files in /usr/ should be READABLE by any user and almost all directories should be READABLE & EXECUTABLE by all so that they can list and read the files in them. I don't know if the commands at http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/reset-rhel-centos-fedora-package-file-perm ission.html would have fixed the issue, because I brute forced the perms to root writeable and then reinstalled the packages again. BTW, I still feel a little confused on what the OP's original problem was and why they are headed in the direction of a 'reinstall the system'. Seems a bit overkill for most problems. ZFS on Linux in production?

We are a CentOS shop, and have the lucky, fortunate problem of having ever-increasing amounts of data to manage. EXT3/4 becomes tough to manage when you start climbing, especially when you have to upgrade, so we're contemplating switching to ZFS. As of last spring, it appears that ZFS On Linux http://zfsonlinux.org/ calls itself production ready despite a version number of 0.6.2, and being acknowledged as unstable on 32 bit systems. However, given the need to do backups, zfs send sounds like a godsend over rsync which is running into scaling problems of its own. (EG: Nightly backups are being threatened by the possibility of taking over 24 hours per backup) Was wondering if anybody here could weigh in with real-life experience? Performance/scalability? -Ben PS: I joined their mailing list recently, will be watching there as well. We will, of course, be testing for a while before "making the switch".

3rd party repositories

Can anyone comment on the use of 3rd party repos for newer versions of software like php, python and mysql? Two I am aware of are puias and ius. Is one preferable to the other? Can their packages be installed in parallel to and without interfering with base packages?

Hello -- We are running CentOS 6.3 64-bit distribution on one of our servers, and I am involved in upgrading the Apache and OpenSSL packages. I completed an upgrade to both where the version of each that is installed on the server is the following: httpd 2.2.15-29.el6.centos httpd-manual 2.2.15-29.el6.centos httpd-tools 2.2.15-29.el6.centos openssl 1.0.0-27.el6_4.2 openssl-devel 1.0.0-27.el6_4.2 Are these the latest versions of Apache and OpenSSL that are available to CentOS in package format? Trying *again*, if dnsorb will let me.... Current 6.4. icedtea-web is installed... but firefox doesn't see it at all. Do I need to make a symlink somewhere? mark

Hello list, I am using puppet 2.7.20 from rpmforge, with a build date of Wed 20 Mar 2013. EPEL has an even older version. Then I see this: http://puppetlabs.com/security/cve/cve-2013-3567 that was posted on the month of July 2013. Do I understand correctly, that my puppet-master is vulnerable to remote code execution by every node that has access to master's port tcp/8140? If so, then the only option to use puppet while being safe is to use puppetlabs repo, or build puppet myself? Thank you Ignas

htdocs on NFS share / any pitfalls?

Hi all, i have a new setup where the htdocs directory for the webserver is located on a nfs share. Client has cachefilesd configured. Compared to the old setup (htdocs directory is on the local disk) the performance is not so gratifying. The disk is "faster" compared to the ethernet link but the cache should at least compensate this a bit. Do they exist more pitfalls for such configurations? Thanks LF PS: checking httpd's caching system now ...
