ZFS on Linux in production?

We are a CentOS shop, and have the lucky, fortunate problem of having ever-increasing amounts of data to manage. EXT3/4 becomes tough to manage when you start climbing, especially when you have to upgrade, so we're contemplating switching to ZFS. As of last spring, it appears that ZFS On Linux http://zfsonlinux.org/ calls itself production ready despite a version number of 0.6.2, and being acknowledged as unstable on 32 bit systems. However, given the need to do backups, zfs send sounds like a godsend over rsync which is running into scaling problems of its own. (EG: Nightly backups are being threatened by the possibility of taking over 24 hours per backup) Was wondering if anybody here could weigh in with real-life experience? Performance/scalability? -Ben PS: I joined their mailing list recently, will be watching there as well. We will, of course, be testing for a while before "making the switch".

What the heck is a "text/html decoder"

My phone service provider offers a way to check my voicemail via a webpage. However, when I go to that webpage with Firefox and try to play back a saved message, a window pops up that says this: "The following plugin is required: text/html decoder" What is it looking for and how can I install it? Firefox ESR and Coldfusion

CentOS-6.4 x86_64 Firefox-17.0.10ESR I am getting a missing plugin report from Firefox when trying to load this url: http://yyyy.xxx.net//sco_launchv5.1.cfm?regKey=22349&CFID=0&CFTOKEN=1ED09F3… A Firefox search for plugins reports none found. I believe that this URL refers to a Coldfusion script. Given the context I am working in I believe that this script is an interactive training audio-visual. extremely slow NFS performance under 6.x [SOLVED]

I've posted here about this a number of times. The other admin I work with had been playing with it recently, with some real problems we'd been having, and this time, with a year or so's more stuff to google, and newer documentation, found the problem. What we'd been seeing: cd to an NFS-mounted directory, and from an NFS-mounted directory, tar -xzvf a 25M or so tar.gz, which unpacks to about 105M. Under CentOS 5, on a local drive, seconds; doing the above, about 35 seconds. Mount options included sync. Under 6.x, from the beginning, it was 6.5 to 7 *minutes*. The result was that we'd been keeping our home directory servers on 5. What he found was the mount option barrier. According to one or two hits I found, googling, it's not clear that 5.x even recognizes this option. From upstream docs, <https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux…>, it's enabled by default, and affects *all* journalled filesystems. Remounting the drive with -o nobarrier, I just NFS mounted an exported directory... and it took 20 seconds. Since most of our systems are all on UPSes, we're not worried about sudden power loss... and my manager did a jig, and we're starting to talk about migrating the rest of our home directory servers.... mark

Has anyone else experienced this? > One thing that provokes that, in my experience, is repos from other repositories, where it's not a dependency on this, but that repo does have it as a dependency. mark

root password required

Hi, I've lost private key for my instance. So I've generated new Private/Public Keys, Created Image from my instance, and Launched new instance. Now I can ssh to this new instance: but it ask me for root password (which it did not on original instance): It looks like this is problem with MarketPlace AMI I was using originally: CentOS-6-x86_64-20120527-EBS-03-adc4348e-1dc3-41df-b833-e86ba57a33d6-ami-8f9af1e6.1 (ami-83cd5eb9). Any help with fixing this unexpected root password required problem?

yum update --skip-broken failure

Though I've used it countless times in the past, "yum update --skip-broken" doesn't work anymore... it doesn't skip over updates which have dependency problems. Is this a known issue? Is there a work-around for it? Has anyone else experienced this? tnx.

update from local repo mirror

so this may be an odd question, but my google fu seems to be failing me. I've created a local mirror of centos 5 & 6 with various instructions across the net, it seems to be functional, syncs on a regular basis,and is generally usable (I've built machines with kickstart/netboot from it and they seem generally workable). my difficulty comes up when I try to use the local mirror for system updates. if I use the originally installed repo configs and run yum check-update, I get a list of 10-15 RPMs for updates, if I change the repo files, do a yum clean all, comment out mirrorlist and uncommenting/chang baseurl= http://localmirror/path/to/repo and run a check, I get nothing. if I look in localmirror:/path/to/repo and do a find for the version numbers I got as available updates from the remote repositories, I find appropriate files in seemingly reasonably named directory paths. my current best guess is that my repodata/repomd.xml file needs some sort of update/rebuild via the createrepo script, but I can't seem to find the 'right' way to this. does anyone have any pointers? thanks. -- Even the Magic 8 ball has an opinion on email clients: Outlook not so good.

read-only file system when trying to save files

I have installed emacs with yum and now I'm trying to create a .emacs file and put some commands in it, but I can't type anything in the emacs buffer. It says the buffer is read-only. I exited emacs and did touch .emacs and I get a message that it can't do that on a read-only file system. I googled around to see why this might be, but I can't see any links on this. Any tips why this might be doing this? I've heard that centos is strict on changes, but I don't know the extent it restricts changes. I followed a page where I did echo 0 >/selinux/enforce . But this is only good until reboot. But shouldn't I be now able to make changes in ~* Thanks, -wes
