Centos-compatible motherboards

Hi all! I'm toying with the idea of spending some Christmas money on a new MB and CPU to upgrade my desktop. Although I've always been partial to AMD chips, I'm tempted this time to find something Intel-ish, I5, quad core, or so. In looking at mommyboards at New Egg and Amazon, I find so many I am unable to make reasonable determinations regarding suitability, so am hoping some of you who have new(ish) intel-compatible boards could offer some hints. Also, I'd like to keep the cost of MB, CPU and RAM to no more (or little more) than $300-350. (seeing as how apparently mid-range I5 chips cost over 200 each, that may be a vain hope.) I expect that the newest ones may work with something bleeding edge like Fedora (et al), but I like centos for my desktop since it doesn't have the ridiculous churn rate of the more aggressive distros. I can't bring myself to relish the thought of rebuilding my main desktop twice a year (or even once a year). So, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! CentOS 6.4 died on me again. Didn't leave any traces that I could find. The screen just suddenly went black. Couldn't switch to another virtual terminal. Pushing the reset button worked. idea: "hybrid" iso images?

In order to create a bootable CentOS installation USB thumb drive, there are several steps one must follow. The process often involves using a Windows box, which can be kinda annoying. The Linux Mint distro has what they call a "Hybrid" iso image. (see: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744 ) This image can be written to a thumb drive and used for installation simply by performing: # dd /path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdb (where /dev/sdb is the thumb drive device). This thumb drive can now be booted and used for installation. The same image.iso file can be written to CD/DVD to create the installation media as well. Is this a complicated ISO build process? I'm frequently installing to systems without CD/DVD drives, so this would come in handy. Thanks! EPEL problem

Hi, all. I'm trying to install the EPEL repo on a fully up to date CentOS 6.4. I'm using wget to download from my usual source but after I install it via `sudo rpm -ivh epel-xxxxx` it's not actually there in `/etc/yum.repos.d`. Trying to install it again, Yum just tells me it's already installed. I've no idea where it is installed if it is (which I don't think it is) so I'm stumped. Any help appreciated. Can't install Python i686 on x86_64 system (centos 6.5)

Hello, This is my first time posting to the list adn I've run into a problem trying to install python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 on my x86_64 bit system, which I updated to CentOS 6.5 this evening. I receive the following error: error: Failed dependencies: libpython2.6.so.1.0 is needed by python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 python-libs(x86-32) = 2.6.6-51.el6 is needed by python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 libpython2.6.so.1.0 is needed by python-devel-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 Now I've downloaded the python and python-devel i686 versions from a mirror and tried to install locally with 'sudo rpm -Uvh python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 python-devel-2.6.6-51.el6.i686', but I always receive the same error. I tried 'sudo yum install python-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 python-devel-2.6.6-51.el6.i686 with again the same error. Brian Bernard

CentOS 6.5 VirtualBox

Hi Is anyone here using VirtualBox? I've had it working rather well for some time, but after some recent upgrade or the other it's started exiting with a Segmentation fault just after startup, before windows are opened or anything. I've tried a few different versions, all with the same result. I'm using binary packages http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/rpm/el. So, have any of you lot seen this? Centos6.5 -- Broadcom BCM4313 -- having trouble connecting

Dear All, I'm having trouble on 2 laptops Lenovo B580 since upgrading to Centos6.5. grub color on C6 (not)

I have tried more than half a dozen different combinations of the "color" command in my grub.conf file, and see nothing but black and white. Is there * a problem with the Centos grub command? * a problem with grub figuring out how to do color on my hardware? * a true-false day, when everything is either true or false, no in between grays, and no color? scratching my head, Ted Miller Elkhart, IN, USA

Odd problems with CR updates

As I've seen no mention of this anywhere, I've got to assume it's just me. Doing some of the CR updates last night, google-chrome and firefox suddenly stopped working with https pages, including google itself. I was able to downgrade, but wasn't sure exactly what had caused the problem. Tonight, trying again, package by package, it seems that it's nss-softokn that's causing the problem. Has anyone run into something similar? For example, if I upgrade to the CR version, then open chromium and type a search phrase, I'll get message that this web page not available. Firefox is somewhat more informative, ---------- An error occurred during a connection to www.google.com. security library: invalid algorithm. (Error code: sec_error_invalid_algorithm) The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified. Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem. Alternatively, use the command found in the help menu to report this broken site. -------- This happens when I upgrade to nss-softokn.3.14.3-9.el6 When I downgrade to 3.14.3-3.el6_4 it's fine. clicking on link in Thunderbird fails to open page in Firefox

This worked fine for years until I updated firefox and thunderbird recently. Now, however, when I click on a link in an email in thunderbird, rather than open the indicated webpage in firefox, nothing at all happens. network.protocol-handler.app.http in tbird's about:config specifies the executable /usr/lib/thunderbird/open-browser.sh and running the latter at the CLI with a URL as an arg does work as expected: the spec'd URL is loaded into firefox. So I suspect a bug in tbird. Anyone else having this problem?
