CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM Install freezes

I am trying to install a CentOS 6.4 x86_64 VM using a CentOS 5.9 x86_64 host, but its install has froze *twice*. What I am doing is to create a 10gig LVM volume, which I put a MS-DOS partition table on (using fdisk). I then format the only partition to ext3, install grub and install the pxeboot kernel and initrd.img and a simple grub.conf to load this. I have the CentOS 6.4 x86_64 ISOs mounted (via loop) and exported as NFS file systems: /distrocds/CentOS/6.4/CentOS-6.4-i386-bin-DVD1.iso 3.6G 3.6G 0 100% /centos64i386/1 /distrocds/CentOS/6.4/CentOS-6.4-i386-bin-DVD2.iso 1.1G 1.1G 0 100% /centos64i386/2 /distrocds/CentOS/6.4/CentOS-6.4-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso 4.1G 4.1G 0 100% /centos64x86_64/1 /distrocds/CentOS/6.4/CentOS-6.4-x86_64-bin-DVD2.iso 1.4G 1.4G 0 100% /centos64x86_64/2 sauron.deepsoft.com% sudo exportfs /centos64x86_64/1 192.168.250.0/255.255.255.0 /centos64x86_64/2 192.168.250.0/255.255.255.0 /centos64i386/1 192.168.250.0/255.255.255.0 /centos64i386/2 192.168.250.0/255.255.255.0 I am able to boot up the installer and have it NFS mount the first DVD and things go fine util it installs selinux-policy-targeted-3.7.19-195.el6.noarch. The VM is busy for a while, then the CPU usage goes to zero and it just sits there. What am I doing wrong? This worked just fine with the 32-bit version of CentOS 6.4. Is it because some package from the second disk is needed? Do I have to create a merged version of the DVDs? Or is something else wrong? dhcpd options

A few weeks ago, suddenly, reading news at lunch, I could not get to nytimes.com. I could ping it, and nslookup it, and if I put the IP address in place of the name, it was fine. After *much* back and forth over a ticket I put in, over the last week or so, our group figured it out: It *seemed* to be related to IPv6, and there's only *some* few sites, such as the Times, and Orbits, and one or two others I found, while, say, the Washington Post, or Huffpo, etc, were fine; and I could make it work by putting IPV6INIT="no" in ifcfg-eth0 and restarting the network, but another admin got it nailed, we *think*: apparently the M$-based DNS resolver's sending back extended DNS packets, and we gag. tcpdump saw us asking for an A record, then an AAAA record, then using search.... But putting the *very* counterintuitive option edns0 in /etc/resolv.conf, it works instantly, no caching, no nuthin'. Taking that out breaks it again. My question: it *appears* that we could add option edns0 to dhcpd.conf on the server, and it would fix it for everyone on our subnet. Have I misunderstood what I'm reading in the manpages? mark

Is it fine to upgrade to Centos 6 rpms, being at centos 5.8

Hi, I'm currently at CentOS 5.8. After some penetration testing, found some high severity OpenSSH issues which would require its upgrade. But till CentOS 5.9 the latest rpm available is openssh-4.3p2-82.el5 (which I'm currently using). Is it fine to upgrade to CentOS 6 rpms while I'm on CentOS 5? Thanks, Anumeha

GFS2 hangs after one node going down

Hi guys, my goal is to create a reliable virtualization environment using CentOS 6.4 and KVM, I've three nodes and a clustered GFS2. The enviroment is up and working, but I'm worry for the reliability, if I turn the network interface down on one node to simulate a crash (for example on the node "node6.blade"): 1) GFS2 hangs (processes go in D state) until node6.blade get fenced 2) not only node6.blade get fenced, but also node5.blade! Help me to save my last neurons! Thanks Maurizio

posfix admin issue

Dear All I had successfully installed posfixadmin. I was able to login to postfix admin and create email ids etc. In something broken (not sure which one caused the issue), I am experiencing below problem with postfix admin. 1. I am able to access domain/mailadmin page. 2. I can create admin accounts at domain/mailadmin/setup.php 3. I can see the admin login page by access But when I enter my admin mailid, and password (i am 100% sure these are correct), it goes to a page domain/login.php and then says "Page not found". My question is why it is redirecting wrongly to domain/login.php. Kindly help me. Please note that I have all other things working like amavisd, dovecot etc, I am able to send recv mails for accounts that I created previously. Regards Austin

Network interface status

change /etc/security/limits.conf need reboot or not?

We have CEntos 5.5 on DELL server. Due to more and more databases run on same server sometime processes number read max and cause 'resource temporary unavailable". I plan to change /etc/security/limits.conf value: oracle soft nproc 2047 ==> 4096 Do i need reboot to make it effect? How to test change is effect? Thanks.

Adding third party driver at installation time.

Hi, I have a PCIe storage device. My driver registers this device as a block device in linux. My block device is working fine under linux. Following are the steps which I used for Centos installation on my storage device: 1) During Centos installation time and before scanning of my storage device, I loaded the driver from command line(By pressing Ctrl + Alt + F2) from USB disk. 2) Post loading of drivers, the installation proceeded successfully on my storage device. Query: 1) How to add my driver as part of installed initrd image at the installation time itself.[because root file system also installed on same device] Waiting for positive reply Thanks & Regards, Sateesh

2 questions re UPS management

Hi, trying to figure out how the system manages UPS connections. On both Centos 5.9 and 6.4, merely plugging in a USB UPS device causes an icon to appear in the top panel, and (at least on 5.9, haven't yet tested this in 6.4) when the UPS suffers a power failure the system notices and after a bit does a clean shutdown. All this without installing ANYTHING extra. one of the UPSes I'm using is a tripplite (now on 6.4 x86_64, but formerly on the same machine with 5.9 i686), the other is a CyberPower UPS on a different 5.9 machine. question #1: in 5.9 there are two entries in /etc/inittab, one for power fail and the other for power restoration. The default setting for the powerfail entry has it doing a shutdown in 2 minutes. So, I need to tweak it a bit: that UPS powers two computers, the Centos 5.9 box and a Windows XP box. A little googling showed me how to use Samba tools to tell XP to do a shutdown. That works fine. but if I add the command for that into the inittab entry I get an error message (when power fails) about the line being too long. So, I created a shellscript that runs both the command to tell XP to go down, followed by the shutdown command that tells Centos to shut down. I changed the two minute time to 5 minutes to make sure Windoze is all the way down even if it's busy. When I run this script from the commandline it works just fine. but when I turn off input power to the UPS it starts the XP shutdown then within without waiting the specified length of time, initiates the shutdown of Linux. Once the shutdown is done, the UPS powers off, thereby killing the not-yet-shutdown windoze box. #!/bin/sh # # invoked by the poweroff clause in /etc/inittab instead of the command # originally in that place. This one also shuts down the Windoze box. net rpc SHUTDOWN -C "System shutting down NOW due to power failure" -f -I 172.19.23.120 -U <myusername>%<mypassword> /sbin/shutdown -f -h +5 "Power Failure; System Shutting Down" and here's the entry from inittab: pf::powerfail:/etc/powerfail The shellscript does contain "#!/bin/sh" as its first line, but it is currently being invoked simply by the path to the script. when I get back to the office I'll try changing it to "/bin/bash /etc/powerfail" to see if that makes a difference, but I kinda don't expect it to. So, I'm wondering how the underlying mechanism works, AND if anyone knows how (or even IF) it's possible to hand inittab a script to run instead of burying the necessary commands directly into the inittab entry. Question #2: On the Centos 6.4 box at home, I haven't yet tried turning off power to the UPS to see if it actually shuts doown, but given that a UPS icon appears in the panel, and there are settings for what should happen when power fails, I expect it will. The question here is: how does this magic all work? We no longer have any entries in inittab to manage this, apparently we now use upstart to manage the same things, and I've spent some time digging for man pages and looking around for upstart file(s) to find out how such events are handled, and so far I've not found anything specifically for a "powerfail" event. boot problem on Desktop edition 6.4

Hi dear friends for three days . I have a problem . Shortly I have Hp elitebook with Centos 6 nearly more than one year without any problem When last update for kernel 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 was realeased. I did not restart machine. After 3 days I started machine and I got a error message of getaddrinfo() problem of solving host name. And there is showed of bugs.centos.org. I reconfig /etc/hosts and restart machine after startin libvirtd (OK) There is nothing. I can't see my gnome desktop (Maybe this was a problem of another update which was same time with 2.6.32-358.2.1.el6.x86_64 ) Some googling and looking some forums I saw another people like me They have same problems. I reinstall kernel and tried alternatives/java but couldn't solve problem. yum reinstall \* did not solved my problem . After starting libvirtd(OK) . There is nothing . Maybe this is coming from my Nvidia card ? Have you any ideas ? Regards. Mustafa Demirci
