SSD for Centos SWAP /tmp & /var/ partition

Has anyone actually used a SSD in a Centos setup? My little experiment with a s/h WD drive for /tmp and SWAP partitions kicked the bucket on Wednesday, when the poor WD drive caught the click-of-death. It was a s/h drive to start with and lasted about 4 months. But that was without the /var/log/ partition being written to it, as I mounted that back onto /var/log from the original drive. So I had to install another (WD) drive, and repartion it and rebuild my RPM package database, from the backed-up Packages file. That seems to be all OK now. I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to use a new SSD for moving all the disk i/o to, that Linux likes to do so often. Plus putting SWAP onto a decent SSD should speed things up somewhat. Here's a short video of a laptop fitted with a SSD drive booting macOS, compared to a similar laptop booting from the standard HDD. The laptop with the SSD boots and loads some apps in 28 seconds. Create Virtual Machine via HTTP or FTP

Hi, I'm trying to create a Virtual Machine using Network Install mode (I tried HTTP and FTP). The HTTP/FTP server where the installation files are located is the Host Machine. The URL that I'm using is: http://192.168.1.104/inst and the Automatic detect option detects the OS without problem. When the installation starts I got an error: Unable to retrieve http://192.168.1.104/inst/images/install.img I tried different path but I always get the same error. The host machine is a Centos 6.2 (2.6.32.-220.el6.x86_64) I really appreciate any help with this problem. Thanks in advance,

idea: "hybrid" iso images?

In order to create a bootable CentOS installation USB thumb drive, there are several steps one must follow. The process often involves using a Windows box, which can be kinda annoying. The Linux Mint distro has what they call a "Hybrid" iso image. (see: http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/744 ) This image can be written to a thumb drive and used for installation simply by performing: # dd /path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdb (where /dev/sdb is the thumb drive device). This thumb drive can now be booted and used for installation. The same image.iso file can be written to CD/DVD to create the installation media as well. Is this a complicated ISO build process? I'm frequently installing to systems without CD/DVD drives, so this would come in handy. Thanks! Best configuration for encrypted software RAID 1?

I'm setting up a computer with CentOS 6.4 and a mirrored software RAID. I would like it to be encrypted so I was wondering what the best configuration is. The only info I could find is http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-docs/2008-October/001912.html but it appears to be a bit old and the info on the wiki ( http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/EncryptTmpSwapHome ) doesn't seem to address RAIDs. My main question is will it be better to encrypt the RAID itself or the two partitions used by the RAID? Any other things I should be aware of? Thanks, Dave

Building CentOS 6.2 custom install media

Hi, For the OLPC school server ("XS") we are planning to move from our dated F9 setup to CentOS 6.2. Thanks for all the effort involved in producing this distro. One important part of this project is a 'respin' of the install media - we need to add a handful of packages from external repositories, and maybe run a command late in the install. Are the scripts/configurations used to produce the CentOS official CD/DVDs available? I guess this would be our most reliable/sensible starting point. I am familiar with pungi, kickstart, anaconda, etc, so just a simple git link would be enough to get me started. Thanks, Daniel

Help with thread Centos 6.4 won't reboot on install

Newbie here. Need help with a thread that has about 25 posts. No replies in a few days. The thread is in software support for centos 6 and the subject of the thread is Centos 6.4 won't reboot on install. Have had limited success in getting a login screen but once I logout, I can't get back in again. It was mentioned in the thread that the problem is likely in Network Configuration. I have no GUI (gnome) no mouse, no terminal, and keyboard use only with Ctl+Alt+F2. Can login as root but have no luck getting the GUI to appear or to get a user login screen. Having difficulty exporting display

Hello, This is my issue, my remote machine (CentOS 6.3, hosted in Azure windows environment) has an application that I need to test on my local box (CentOS 6.4, a laptop behind a router). Now, this is what I'm doing and the issue that I'm encountering: Local: $ xhost + $ ssh -X someusername(a)somehostname.net -p 49283 Remote: $ export DISPLAY=192.168.1.6:0.0 $ xclock ... and nothing, it just sits there and no xclock shows up :( . I'm fairly convinced that this is due to my router, but I don't know how to deal with it. Any ideas? Am I way off in my guess?

No more support for chrome/chromium on rhel6

If this is true, then it affects my school and my students. I like google-chrome and it works very well with google services. I was planning on using C6 for a long time.
