Suppose I have this C++ program: #include <iostream> int main (int argc, char** argv) { while (1) { char cmd[80]; std::cin.getline(cmd, 80); std::cout << "response to " << cmd << std::endl; } } compiled by: c++ -o junk junk.cpp and I have this bash script: #!/bin/bash ./junk <<EOF blah bleh \cC EOF echo "Something else" When I run the script, the program starts and waits for input forever. I have 2 questions: 1) The "blah" and "bleh" line are not echoed to cout. Why not? Does the here document not send the data to stdin? 2) How do I terminate the program? When run interactively, I use <ctrl>-C. Thanks, Steve

automatic import of rpm keys

Hi, I read http://www.stigviewer.com/check/RHEL-06-000008 The CentOS keys live in /etc/pki/rpm-gpg and when I run yum the first time I am asked if I want to accept the key. Alternatively I could import them manually with something like 'rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/$key, maybe in the %post of a kickstart. I am wondering why this import is not happening automatically at install time. There must be good reasons for that? -- Markus

dmidecode Output

Hey Y'all, How much can I trust the output of dmidecode? The manual that came with my MB says that my MB can support up to 2 Gb of DDR2 RAM. dmidecode seems tell me that I can load up to 8 Gb on this MB. As 4 Gb DDR2 sticks cost about $100 each I figured maybe I should ask, what's the chances that I can plug in two 4 Gb sticks in this machine and actually have it work? Korganizer Calendar Alarms stopped working

For a long time--years-- I've been using Korganizer's Calendar. But lately-- since the last kernel upgrade, I believe-- the alarms don't work anymore. I set an appointment and (most of the time) schedule an alarm (one or more) for it, but the small windows containing the reminders don't pop up anymore... not even those set a year ago which always worked before. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone know what a fix for it might be? tia, ken

Best solution for TRIM on CentOS 5.x

I am planning on using solid state disks with my CentOS 5.x systems. Currently, I am using EXT3 for the file system. >From what I can find, CentOS 5.x does not support TRIM on solid state disks? Is this correct? Should I obtain and build the updated hdparm and use that to trim my drives (for example, via CRON every night at midnight)? Or should I get fstrim (updated util-linux)? Any other suggestions on solid state drives (other than noatime on mounts). Thanks, -- Wade Hampton

Hi All, I bought a USB Bluetooth dongle. However, it's not working for me. Please help, how to debug and get more information as I can not see any error or warning message from system log message. Dear All On my centos 6.2 machine, when I use its default mozilla to browse 192.168.111.121:10087 it returns "loading java class, wait" and waits endlessly. Can you please let me know how can I install java on this machine to get rid of the above message and be able to proceed? Thank you

What method would you suggest for installing the Pinta screenshot editor on CentOS 6.4?

A screenshot editor needs to do a few things - but it must do these three things easily and well: 1. Draw curved and straight arrows, dotted or solid line, with various end dots and points 2. Draw open circles of various shapes to highlight areas of interest 3. Text easily without having to pre-define a bounding box for the ad-hoc text By far, the most powerful easy-to-use freeware screenshot editor is Paint.NET, which isn't on Linux. On Linux, a distant second place goes to Kolourpaint; and a far distant third place to The GIMP (based on ease of performing those three items above). Oddity with CentOS 6.4 instasll

I have two SSD laptops. On one of them, I easily installed CentOS. On the second one, it failed at examining storage--it would either freeze completely or crash with a kernel panic message. On the second one, a generic Clevo, I decided to reinstall, and got the same issue--hanging or kernel panic on examining storage, though it had been trouble free the first time. I've been googling this and came across nothing relevant--in one case, it was due to LVMs, in another, due to a previous installation, in others, possibly due to EFI, none of which were a factor for me. On the Clevo, I decided to leave it as it is for now, as I'm using it, and the differences aren't major. On the other, an older Zenbook, the UX31E, I was able to get around it by installing CentOS 6.3 instead, which went in without incident. When it crashes, the machine freezes completely, so I'm not even able to view any logs, get to a terminal with ctl+alt+Fx. At this point, I'm not asking for help, as much as I am wondering if anyone else has run into this. Another theory given to someone having similar problems was to check memory, which I haven't done, but apparently, only CentOS and SL 6.4 have this problem. Also, as I can work around it, I am not going to spend a lot of time troubleshooting--but I'm wondering if anyone else has run into something similar. It's only been on these two laptops, and the only thing really in common is that they're SSD, but I have no idea if that's a factor--I don't have an extra SATA notebook drive to test if that's the issue or nto. So, my only question here is, has anyone else run into this, and did you find a fix? Or suggestions in trouble shooting? (Though I probably won't go to the effort of running memtest overnight, as 6.4 seems to be the only thing affected. I tried with both netinstall and Install DVD on both SL and CentOS, same result, crash or hang at examining storage devices). I have not tried totally cleaning the disk of either machine and seeing if that's an issue, but in both cases, there was both empty space and empty, standard ext4 partitions for them to use. Thanks for taking the time to look at this. Though I'm not going to invest a great deal of effort in troubleshooting, I'm certainly ready to try simple solutions. Cannot get rtorrent to run

If I'm writing about this in the wrong place, please let me know. However, when I uninstalled rtorrent and then re-installed it, I kept getting this very same error: $ rtorrent foobar.torrent rtorrent: symbol lookup error: rtorrent: undefined symbol: _ZN7torrent10ThreadBase8m_globalE Why is this happening?
