Java versions in CentOS

Hi All, Following the latest security updates from Oracle, the version of OpenJDK package is currently listed as: java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.51-2.4.4.1.el6_5.x86_64.rpm The Redhat security advisory lists these packages: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2014-0026.html but it makes no reference to the build number, which it turns out is important. The build on the package in centos 6.5 is currently listed as b02: [........]$ java -version java version "1.7.0_51" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (rhel-2.4.4.1.el6_5-x86_64 u51-b02) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.45-b08, mixed mode) However changes were being made in at least b10: https://bugs.openjdk.java.net/browse/JDK-8028111 I guess this raises three questions: 1. How is the build of the JDK selected for a security update in RHEL/CentOS? 2. Could the b number be made more clear in the release information given its importance? 3. Is it possible to JDK package be updated to the latest build number, given the current one has missing backports? Backing up Xen vm's

Dear All, because the organization I work for has to enter the 21 century eventually, and encouraged by the the excellent wiki's available, I'm giving Xen a try. I' ve tested setting it all up but I have this question concerning making backups. i' ve noticed that virsh snaphot-create does not work, and googling this, I can find many posts describing making backups with rbackup, lvm , dd, .... The thing is there is not always a date with these posts and articles, so before I dig into this: Is this still the way this is done, or is there now a more straightforward way to backup ( Xen ) vm's? new Centos 6.5 32 bit yum issue

When I fire up the virtualbox VM Centos starts as I would expect, but when I try to use yum list updates (or any of several other yum command I've tried) I get a repo error - " Loaded plugins: fastestmirror Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=6&arch=i386&repo=os error was 14: PYCURL ERROR 6 - "Couldn't resolve host 'mirrorlist.centos.org'" Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base I looked in the repo.d and the base CentOS-Base.repo suggests that if the mirrorlist= does not work I should try the commented out baseurl= instead. [OT] Video card radiator

I recently obtained a desktop computer with an nVidia video card: from lspci: 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G84 [GeForce 8600 GT] (rev a1 I had to open the case to connect the DVD drive and saw what appears to be a fallen radiator: http://www.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu/~hennebry/computer/amd64-1.jpg http://www.cs.ndsu.nodak.edu/~hennebry/computer/amd64-2.jpg That nothing is shorted out appears to be a matter of luck. Strange Samba Issue

Ok so I built the microserver as a centos box and now I have a strange one I built a Centos 6.5 box with a 3.6 raid ext4 data drive on it, shared with samba. Now when I browse these folders on the console I can see the files. when I sftp on the command line from another box I can see these files. But when I browse via samba or using a gui sftp client quite a lot of these files are missing... Any ideas?

deleting FakeRaid -> what happens to the partitions/data

Hi A server has FakeRAID installed, I want to remove it to make it mdadm driven .... If I delete the FakeRAID including - disabling it in the BIOS - removing the dmraid driver from initrd - deleting all meta data from partitions - deleting all dmraid packages is the data still available on the drives, i.e. the partitions, filesystem and files are still ok? I know that FakeRAID controller is not a real hardware controller and the driver (thus CPU doing the work) makes it look like one drive ... So if you create a partition it would be a standard (and same) partition on each of the drive connected to a FakeRAID? Memory Not Recognized

Hello All, I noticed that my CentOS 6.5 system reports that I only have about 10.9 GiB of RAM when I actually have 16384M. I have already tried adding mem=xxM to the end of the kernel line in grub.conf. The result is the same. Any suggestions? Joe

Mirroring Disk (Apologies for the new thread I deleted the original)

Answers to questions... It really depends on your use case. I'm looking to be able to pull out old dead drive, and replace it with new (almost up to date) drive and reboot. The USB disk is a 1TB disk in a case. > Been considering dump and restoring to the usb disk periodically? or > maybe something using LVM or maybe creating and breaking a RAID 1 > array? Constantly making and breaking a RAID1 with a USB drive is probably not helpful. It's just more wear and tear on the OS drive, because it has to be constantly read in order to mirror the target drive, and your USB drive is probably not what you want to boot off of if your system drive fails. You'd be much better off with a permanent RAID1, but if you can't do that then at least make a RAID1 to a USB enclosure which contains the same size and interface drive as your current system disk. This way if it fails you can swap in the backup drive and not have to boot from a USB drive. Yeah I thought that would be the case, as I said above I'd like to be able to boot from the USB enclosure but the plan is to replace the failed internal with the disk from the USB enclosure. Would LVM be any help or is it just a complication? I defiantly leaning to the nightly dump/restore into a similarly formatted disk.

Filesystem gets corrupted after kernel upgrade to 2.6.32-431.5.1.el6

Hi, I recently installed some fresh CentOS 6.5 machines and it took only about 20 minutes until the file system (ext4) was broken. And with "broken" I mean, that the system wasn't able to find vital system libraries any more! I were able to reproduce it on highly different systems: - A fresh installed CentOS 6.5 64 Bit on a virtual machine (KVM) - A system which I installed some weeks ago (also a KVM machine) and did a "yum update" which upgraded to kernel 2.6.32-431.5.1.el6. - A fresh installed CentOS 6.5 64 Bit on native hardware on a RAID 5 assembled with mdadm - A CentOS 6.4 system installed some months ago on native hardware with mdadm RAID 5 The last system wasn't able to boot after the upgrade and crashed with several kernel panics which I can show as a screenshot if there's any interest - but the display resolution was quite low so there are not many helpful information :-( Actually, I assume that there's anything broken with the new kernel or at least the kernel module for ext4 file system. You can reproduce it by just doing a "yum update" and rebooting the system. If it comes up, reboot it again and manually do an offline filesystem check - or just do some writing activities on the disks. Is it just me? I don't use any 3rd party repositorys and it blows my mind that no one else seems to notice...! Greetings from Wuppertal, Germany Max
