Virtualization of a production environment

I need to virtualize a server, but this needs to be stable enough for production. What are the advantages/disadvantages of the different hypervisers with CENTOS ESXi (vmware) XEN KVM Primarily I will be running Centos6.4 there may or may not be a windows server. I need stability as this will be production. I will not need the equivalent of V Motion, but would like to be able to do a physical to virtual would like the capability of snapshots and to be able to backup as files on storage (I cannot do boot from SAN, but this will be SAN attached). -- Thanks, Dan

I have also been informed, but I am not certain of the veracity of the report, that if you use the Google search bar browser add-in then you are always logged in to your Goofle account for the purposes of tracking web activity. I do know that if you use Google maps from a registered IPhone then these activities are logged as well. You can see what information Google has about your web browsing by logging on to your Goofle account and visiting: https://history.google.com/history/ . Google admits to the following: What is stored in your Web History Google Web History saves information about your activity on the web, as well as details about your browser, including: Searches on Google Pages you click on from the search results page Results that appeared, including private results from Google products like Google+, Gmail, and Google Calendar Ads you respond to by clicking the ad itself or completing a transaction on the advertisers site Your IP address Your browser type and language Your searches and other activity on Google Maps, including maps around the web You can lock your history from public viewing but that is not quite the same thing as having it kept confidential. And you may be sure that Google Inc. is busily running algorithms on it and those of other Gooflers with whom you have any known association - say Goofle group memberships. You are supposed to be able to delete your histories but exactly what that actually deletes and how irrecoverably it does it is not clear to me. I now user Startpage or DuckDuckGo for all my searches in consequence of this incessant prying into my activities. semi-OT: anyone into setup.py?

I'm trying to patch this package that I'm rpmbuilding, and its setup.py does not link a library for one extension that it dies if it doesn't have. Note that ldd is fooled, because there's a declaration, so it says everything is fine... but without a definition, it dies, and that's in the other library.... Feel free to contact me offlist. mark

find with exclude directory

Hey all, I'm trying to do a find of all files with the phrase 'varnish' in the name, but want to exclude a user home directory called /usr/local/digitalplatform. Change server name in postfix configuration

Hi, A consultant, long gone, set up postfix, dovecot, amavisd and squirrelmail for my wife. It works fine but my wife wants to change the server name from old.com to new.com so the name is more appropriate for her business. My approach would be to use sed to change all occurences of old.com to new.com. Specifically, I used grep to identify the following files where I should make the changes. /etc/postfix/main.cf /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf /etc/squirrelmail/config.php /etc/amavisd.conf /etc/sysconfig/network (change host name) In addition, there would be an MX record for mail.new.com pointing to the IP of the server. My question is, will this work or will I corrupt my email server? If I mess it up I can always restore it to the original. Thank you, Joe

Samba problem

Hello, My only hard drive failed on a private server so I had to replace it and reinstall Centos 6.5 and Samba. My smb.conf file is OK according to "testparm". I configured smb and nmb, with chkconfig, to start when the system boots. After the system boots if I do "service nmb status" I get the response "nmbd dead but pid file exists". I can delete the pid file manually and start nmb with "service nmb start". The problem is that when the system shuts down and restarts I still find that "nmbd dead but pid file exists". Any suggestions on how to fix the problem would be much appreciated. Thank you, Joe

SSSD Passwd change problem

Hi, I have sssd set up and it mostly works how I would expect, but the ldap_chpass_uri does not seem to work correctly with the passwd command. I have two configs, one working and one not: Working: ldap_uri = ldap://ldap.example.com ldap_chpass_uri = ldap://ldap.example.com Non Working: ldap_uri = ldap://ldap3.example.com,ldap://ldap2.example.com,ldap:// ldap.example.com ldap_chpass_uri = ldap://ldap.example.com ldap.example.com is the master ldap server, and the other two are read-only consumers. I have the clients set up with sssd to use their local ldap replication, except for changing their password. With the non working config the only thing I have changed is the ldap_uri. The behavior seems like it is not using the ldap_chpass_uri directive. I can post more of the config files if needed. When I use the passwd command to update a password, the first config snippet works as expected, whereas the second does not. Any ideas? Thanks, Eric Falbe
