Hey, folks, I'm working on finding some new compute nodes. What I'm looking for is a 64 core box, with room enough for a lot of RAM. I can get it from Dell, or HP (bleah! a 4U box), but I need to have three quotes, y'know. We've gotten a lot from Penguin in the past, but they're all Supermicro, and we've had a *lot* of problems with the 64 core boxes, so I'm looking for another vendor. Suggestions? Recommendations? People to run the other way from? (Sun/Oracle is down there *under* "none of the above"). mark

Tracking Open Ports

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to notify or log when a specific remote port is openened? I have an old LDAP server that I am looking to get rid of, but there is still a few queries reaching it. The sytem authentication is setup correctly (as is Postfix), so I am thinking there must be some script or program that is setup to query the older LDAP server. I tried using lsof -i|grep 389, but I am not quick enough to get results before the socket is closed. Is there any program or script I could write to detect when this socket gets opened, and what PID and/or program owns it? Thanks, Eric Falbe

Every time I update my system with clamav, it doesn't restart and freshclam no longer works, because of a permission issue on the log directory. Each time I update clamav I have to search the Internet to figure out what there is to do. That NEVER helps so I try different combinations on user and group in amavis-new and clamav configuratio files, until I eventually get them both to work. I am getting clamav and amavisd update from the epel repo. What can I do to prevent this from happening? Emmett

I'm not sure if this is helpful to anyone else and I can't decide if it's mildly clever or just a stupid pet trick, really. I recently decided to reinstall my work laptop with centos. as part of the install I used an 8g sandisk USB drive; it's roughly the size of a wireless mouse receiver. I put /boot, / and /usr on the USB drive, set encrypted partitions for swap, /home, /opt, /var and put them as well as the boot loader the internal drive. so now the USB drive is quite literally acting like a 'key' for whole laptop. with no drive, the laptop comes up to an error like 'No OS found' or something of the like. anyway, not sure anyone else will find it useful, helpful, interesting or anything else, but I felt like sharing, I guess.

OK, I have installed CentOS 6.5 on this beast using parted to make GPT partitions (royal PIA, but done). The machine has three 500G SATA disks with 4K sector sizes. Partitioned with three partions for each of the main disks: sda1 => FAT32 => /boot/efi sdb1 => FAT32 => (not presently mounted, but will be a backup copy of /boot/efi). sda2, sdb2 => /dev/md0 => ext4 => /boot sda3, sdb3 => /dev/md1 => LVM VG, containing /, /home, swap, soon others sdc1 => will be an ext4 and will hold backups. I went into the BIOS and added a UEFI boot option using sda1: "C:\EFI\redhat\grub.efi", but this boots to the grub shell. USB-3.0 on C6.5 ??

Just wondering if there are any known issues with USB 3.0 storage devices in Centos 6.5?? I just got one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817332028 it does either esata or USB 3.0. My new motherboard (ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0) supports both, so I've tried both (of course, can't have a feature without at least giving it a whirl! :)). esata seems to work fine, I can copy gigs 'n gigs of data to it using the esata connection. however, with USB3 it works for a bit then something goes wonky... After copying some hundreds of megabytes (and I don't know if it is a consistent number or not) suddenly my C6 box starts reporting write errors. some investigation shows that /dev/sdc (and /dev/sdc1) no longer exist on the system. it takes a reboot to get it back. After which it'll work for a while then the same thing all over again. I've tried a different USB 3.0 cable but it makes no difference. files automatically changing permissionssdsds

hello, I'm running apache 2.2.24 and php 5.2.17. The web site that it's service turns into a 403 Forbidden error every 5 minutes literally. I've found that doing a chmod -Rv 775 on the web root restores the site. However this is a band-aid and no real solution. I've combed through all the cron jobs in /var/spool/cron both on this machine and the one it was recently transferred from. And I can find absolutely NO evidence of any rsync jobs or chowns or anything similar that could be affecting that directory. What I need to do is to figure out how to determine what exactly is changing the permissions on that directory's files so that I can put an end to it. Right now I have a chown -Rv 775 running on the directory every 5 minutes. But that is just going to contribute to load and can't be a permanent solution. The directory in question is on an NFS share. However I am unsure of that being the cause. I'm afraid that I am at a loss for troubleshooting steps here.
